Book excerpt: In Dundas' assured hands, one man's search for answers makes for a lyrical, riveting meditation on memory.--EW One man knows the connection between two extraordinary acts of arson, fifteen years apart, in his Montana hometown--if only he could remember it. Having lost much of his memory from a traumatic brain injury sustained in Iraq, army veteran Matthew Rose is called back to Montana after his father's death to settle his affairs, and hopefully to settle the past as well. It's not only a blank to him, but a mystery. Why as a teen did he suddenly become sullen and vacant, abandoning the activities and people that had meant most to him? How did he, the son of hippy activists, wind up enlisting in the first place? Then on his first night back, Matthew sees a house go up in flames, and it turns out a local college student has died inside. And this event sparks a memory of a different fire, an unsolved crime from long ago, a part of Matthew's past that might lead to all the answers he's been searching for. What he finds will connect the old fire and the new, a series of long-unsolved mysteries, and a ruthless act of murder.

Book The Dundas Despotism

Download or read book The Dundas Despotism written by Michael Fry and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2004-07-05 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive and up-to-date biography of Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville (1742-1811) and his son Robert, 2nd Viscount Melville (1771-1851). Aided by other members of their family, they ruled Scotland from the 1770s to the 1830s in a period of government later dubbed 'the Dundas Despotism'. Using a mass of new primary and secondary material culled from England, Scotland, Ireland and the United States, Michael Fry here challenges the traditional view that theirs was a corrupt and authoritarian regime. He shows that both father and son sought to achieve good government within the accepted political conventions of the age, and that many of the principles they set out to apply were owed directly to Scottish Enlightenment ideas. The Dundases were also of fundamental importance in drawing Scotland more fully into the United Kingdom and enabling the Union of 1707 to work. This is a sparkling reassessment of a crucial period of Scottish, British and imperial history. The Dundas Despotism was previously published by Edinburgh University Press.

Book The House on Dundas and Vine

Download or read book The House on Dundas and Vine written by Ricky Dale and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story of flesh and blood individuals laid to rest in the tobacco fields of Erie County, or floating down the Niagara river. It is a mesmerising tale about somewhat ordinary people doing extraordinary things in a quite ordinary way! True stories within a story unfurl in this beautiful and often amusing account of a curiously powerful and changing love that refuses to be quashed or compromised. In this, his sixth book, novelist, poet and former singer, Ricky Dale, surpasses all mainstream ‘stick-in-the-mud’ writing and takes the reader to where you haven’t been a thousand times before. “If anyone can evoke both the psychological depths and surface mannerisms in all of his many characters, it is Ricky Dale.” – Walter Parks Thatcher “I am positive that anyone who begins to read this book will quickly fall under its spell and find some kind of kinship with many of its characters. Therein lies much of the book’s charm.” – C.Foster, NY Inquirer “A story that bypasses the melodramatic and simply assaults the tear ducts.” – Emily & Bertha Anderson “A beautifully haunting story about very powerful love between flesh and blood people - read it and weep!” – The Daily Chronicle “Ricky’s constant, gentle and awesome prose is charismatically entwined and bursting at its seams!” – James (Jim) W. Gettys “A very impressive literary achievement, so full of delights.” – Matiste Bernstein – “Blood, sweat and tears are the lifeblood of Ricky’s phraseology, inasmuch as he is able to take you where you haven’t been a thousand times before.” – Susan Alexander (Eve) – “A mesmerising read about somewhat ordinary people doing extraordinary things in a quite ordinary way!” – Jerry Thompson – “ A touching book; and so funny, so likeable.” – Paul; screening room reporter – “Warms the heart, amuses the mind and is unreservedly recommended.” – Leland Carter –

Book excerpt: A Boston Globe Best Book of the Year In this stunning historical fiction debut set in the world of wrestling in the 1920s, a husband and wife are set adrift in a place where everyone has something to hide and not even the fights can be taken at face value. Late summer, 1921: Disgraced former lightweight champion Pepper Van Dean has spent the past two years on the carnival circuit performing the dangerous “hangman’s drop” and taking on all comers in nightly challenge bouts. But when he and his cardsharp wife, Moira, are marooned in the wilds of Oregon, Pepper accepts an offer to return to the world of wrestling as a trainer for Garfield Taft, a down-and-out African American heavyweight contender in search of a comeback and a shot at the world title. At the training camp in rural Montana, Pepper and Moira soon realize that nothing is what it seems: not Taft, the upcoming match, or the training facility itself. With nowhere to go and no options left, Pepper and Moira must carefully navigate the world of gangsters, bootlegging, and fixed competitions, in the hope that they can carve out a viable future. A story of second chances and a sport at the cusp of major change, Champion of the World is a wonderful historical debut from a new talent in fiction.
