Book Ancient Pathways Ancestral Knowledge

Download or read book Ancient Pathways Ancestral Knowledge written by Nancy J. Turner and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 1091 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1: The History and Practice of Indigenous Plant Knowledge Volume 2: The Place and Meaning of Plants in Indigenous Cultures and Worldviews Nancy Turner has studied Indigenous peoples' knowledge of plants and environments in northwestern North America for over forty years. In Ancient Pathways, Ancestral Knowledge, she integrates her research into a two-volume ethnobotanical tour-de-force. Drawing on information shared by Indigenous botanical experts and collaborators, the ethnographic and historical record, and from linguistics, palaeobotany, archaeology, phytogeography, and other fields, Turner weaves together a complex understanding of the traditions of use and management of plant resources in this vast region. She follows Indigenous inhabitants over time and through space, showing how they actively participated in their environments, managed and cultivated valued plant resources, and maintained key habitats that supported their dynamic cultures for thousands of years, as well as how knowledge was passed on from generation to generation and from one community to another. To understand the values and perspectives that have guided Indigenous ethnobotanical knowledge and practices, Turner looks beyond the details of individual plant species and their uses to determine the overall patterns and processes of their development, application, and adaptation. Volume 1 presents a historical overview of ethnobotanical knowledge in the region before and after European contact. The ways in which Indigenous peoples used and interacted with plants - for nutrition, technologies, and medicine - are examined. Drawing connections between similarities across languages, Turner compares the names of over 250 plant species in more than fifty Indigenous languages and dialects to demonstrate the prominence of certain plants in various cultures and the sharing of goods and ideas between peoples. She also examines the effects that introduced species and colonialism had on the region's Indigenous peoples and their ecologies. Volume 2 provides a sweeping account of how Indigenous organizational systems developed to facilitate the harvesting, use, and cultivation of plants, to establish economic connections across linguistic and cultural borders, and to preserve and manage resources and habitats. Turner describes the worldviews and philosophies that emerged from the interactions between peoples and plants, and how these understandings are expressed through cultures’ stories and narratives. Finally, she explores the ways in which botanical and ecological knowledge can be and are being maintained as living, adaptive systems that promote healthy cultures, environments, and indigenous plant populations. Ancient Pathways, Ancestral Knowledge both challenges and contributes to existing knowledge of Indigenous peoples' land stewardship while preserving information that might otherwise have been lost. Providing new and captivating insights into the anthropogenic systems of northwestern North America, it will stand as an authoritative reference work and contribute to a fuller understanding of the interactions between cultures and ecological systems.

Baseball is more than just a sport; it's a reflection of life itself, filled with moments of triumph, defeat, perseverance, and grace. As the bat cracks against the ball and the crowd holds its breath, there's more at play than just the game. Beneath the surface, baseball is rich with spiritual parallels that speak to the heart of our faith journey. In every pitch, swing, and catch, there are lessons that echo the very principles of our Christian walk. The dugout, a place of preparation and strategy, mirrors our need for spiritual readiness and the importance of being grounded in God's Word. Just as players study their opponents and prepare for the game, we too must equip ourselves with spiritual wisdom and understanding to navigate the challenges we face in life. The devotion that drives a player to train, to push through pain and fatigue, mirrors the perseverance we are called to have in our faith-a devotion to God that requires discipline, dedication, and trust. This book takes you on a journey through the innings of life, drawing out spiritual insights from the game of baseball that can transform your walk with the Lord. It's about more than just the love of the game; it's about finding God's hand in every play, every challenge, and every victory. Through the pages of "From Dugout to Devotion," you'll discover how the discipline, teamwork, and perseverance required on the field are the same virtues needed in our spiritual lives. The patience of waiting for the right pitch, the courage to swing even when the outcome is uncertain, and the resilience to get back up after a strikeout all mirror the spiritual truths we encounter in our walk with Christ. Each chapter delves into these parallels, offering encouragement, wisdom, and practical applications to help you grow in your faith. Whether you're a lifelong baseball fan or new to the sport, this book will open your eyes to the deeper spiritual lessons that can be found in the game. It will challenge you to see your faith in a new light, to draw strength from the timeless truths embedded in the game, and to apply these lessons to your own life. • Pages : 172 pages

Download or read book Everyday Editing written by Jeff Anderson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Editing is often seen as one item on a list of steps in the writing process, usually put somewhere near the end, and often completely crowded out of writer' s workshop. Too many times daily editing lessons happen in a vacuum, with no relationship to what students are writing. In Everyday Editing , Jeff Anderson asks teachers to reflect on what sort of message this approach sends to students. Does it tell them that editing and revision are meaningful parts of the writing process, or just a hunt for errors with a 50/50 chance of getting it right, comma or no comma? Instead of rehearsing errors and drilling students on what' s wrong with a sentence, Jeff invites students to look carefully at their writing along with mentor texts, and to think about how punctuation, grammar, and style can be best used to hone and communicate meaning. Written in Jeff' s characteristically witty style, this refreshing and practical guide offers an overview of his approach to editing within the writing workshop as well as ten detailed sets of lessons covering everything from apostrophes to serial commas. These lessons can be used throughout the year to replace Daily Oral Language or error-based editing strategies with a more effective method for improving student writing.

Book The MVP Machine

Download or read book The MVP Machine written by Ben Lindbergh and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Move over, Moneyball -- this New York Times bestseller examines major league baseball's next cutting-edge revolution: the high-tech quest to build better players. As bestselling authors Ben Lindbergh and Travis Sawchik reveal in The MVP Machine, the Moneyball era is over. Fifteen years after Michael Lewis brought the Oakland Athletics' groundbreaking team-building strategies to light, every front office takes a data-driven approach to evaluating players, and the league's smarter teams no longer have a huge advantage in valuing past performance. Lindbergh and Sawchik's behind-the-scenes reporting reveals: How undersized afterthoughts José Altuve and Mookie Betts became big sluggers and MVPs How polarizing pitcher Trevor Bauer made himself a Cy Young contender How new analytical tools have overturned traditional pitching and hitting techniques How a wave of young talent is making MLB both better than ever and arguably worse to watch Instead of out-drafting, out-signing, and out-trading their rivals, baseball's best minds have turned to out-developing opponents, gaining greater edges than ever by perfecting prospects and eking extra runs out of older athletes who were once written off. Lindbergh and Sawchik take us inside the transformation of former fringe hitters into home-run kings, show how washed-up pitchers have emerged as aces, and document how coaching and scouting are being turned upside down. The MVP Machine charts the future of a sport and offers a lesson that goes beyond baseball: Success stems not from focusing on finished products, but from making the most of untapped potential.
