Book The 74th Yeomanry Division in Syria and France

Download or read book The 74th Yeomanry Division in Syria and France written by Major C.H. Dudley Ward and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 74th Division came into being in Egypt in March 1917, composed of three dismounted brigades of yeomanry (2nd, 3rd and 4th), which had fought at Gallipoli in that role, had returned to Egypt to form part of the Suez Canal Defence force and had been reorganized as infantry brigades numbered 229th, 230th and 231st. The GOC, Maj Gen E.S Girdwood, took as the divisional insignia a broken spur which, the author states, might have been a reflection of the bitterness he felt over the fate that condemned the fine yeomanry regiments to an infantry role. The division fought at the Second and Third Battles of Gaza, playing a leading role in the latter, and took part in the capture of Beersheba and Jerusalem. In May 1918 the division was transferred to the Western Front where it fought for the rest of the war, at Bapaume, the Hindenburg Line battles, Epehy and the final advance in Artois and Flanders. Total casualties numbered 8,654 of which just over 5,000 were incurred in France. Three VCs were awarded but in the appendix giving the citations, one of them is shown as Sgt T.Caldwell, who was not in the division when he performed his act of gallantry in October 1918, his battalion (12th RSF) had been transferred to the 31st Division four months previously. On the other hand, the VC won by LSgt W Waring (25th RWF) at Ronssoy during the battle of Epehy doesn't get a mention. Other appendices quote operation orders for the attack on Beersheba and Jerusalem; give casualty figures for Palestine and France and list battalion COs. Dudley Ward is one of the most prolific writer of military histories connected with the Great War. Other divisional histories include the 53rd and 56th Divisions and regimental histories include the Welsh Guards and the RWF. He earned a high reputation and he has done a fine job with this history, backed up with good, clear maps.

Book The Man Who Captured Washington

Download or read book The Man Who Captured Washington written by John McCavitt and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Irish officer in the British Army, Major General Robert Ross (1766–1814) was a charismatic leader widely admired for his bravery in battle. Despite a military career that included distinguished service in Europe and North Africa, Ross is better known for his actions than his name: his 1814 campaign in the Chesapeake Bay resulted in the burning of the White House and Capitol and the unsuccessful assault on Baltimore, immortalized in “The Star Spangled Banner.” The Man Who Captured Washington is the first in-depth biography of this important but largely forgotten historical figure. Drawing from a broad range of sources, both British and American, military historians John McCavitt and Christopher T. George provide new insight into Ross’s career prior to his famous exploits at Washington, D.C. Educated in Dublin, Ross joined the British Army in 1789, earning steady promotion as he gained combat experience. The authors portray him as an ambitious but humane commanding officer who fought bravely against Napoleon’s forces on battlefields in Holland, southern Italy, Egypt, and the Iberian Peninsula. Following the end of the war in Europe, while still recovering from a near-fatal wound, Ross was designated to lead an “enterprise” to America, and in August 1814 he led a small army to victory in the Battle of Bladensburg. From there his forces moved to the city of Washington, where they burned public buildings. In detailing this campaign, McCavitt and George clear up a number of misconceptions, including the claim that the British burned the entire city of Washington. Finally, the authors shed new light on the long-debated circumstances surrounding Ross’s death on the eve of the Battle of North Point at Baltimore. Ross’s campaign on the shores of the Chesapeake lasted less than a month, but its military and political impact was enormous. Considered an officer and a gentleman by many on both sides of the Atlantic, the general who captured Washington would in time fade in public memory. Yet, as McCavitt and George show, Ross’s strategies and achievements during the final days of his career would shape American defense policy for decades to come.

Book Gallipoli

  • Author : Peter Hart
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2011-10-07

  • Pages : 561 pages

Download or read book Gallipoli written by Peter Hart and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-07 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most famous battles in history, the WWI Gallipoli campaign began as a bold move by the British to capture Constantinople, but this definitive new history explains that from the initial landings--which ended with so much blood in the sea it could be seen from airplanes overhead--to the desperate attacks of early summer and the battle of attrition that followed, it was a tragic folly destined to fail from the start. Gallipoli forced the young Winston Churchill from office, established Turkey's iconic founder Mustafa Kemal (better known as "Ataturk"), and marked Australia's emergence as a nation in its own right. Drawing on unpublished eyewitness accounts by individuals from all ranks--not only from Britain, Australia and New Zealand, but from Turkey and France as well--Peter Hart weaves first-hand stories into a vivid narrative of the battle and its aftermath. Hart, a historian with the Imperial War Museum and a battlefield tour guide at Gallipoli, provides a vivid, boots-on-the-ground account that brilliantly evokes the confusion of war, the horrors of combat, and the grim courage of the soldiers. He provides an astute, unflinching assessment of the leaders as well. He shows that the British invasion was doomed from the start, but he places particular blame on General Sir Ian Hamilton, whose misplaced optimism, over-complicated plans, and unwillingness to recognize the gravity of the situation essentially turned likely failure into complete disaster. Capturing the sheer drama and bravery of the ferocious fighting, the chivalry demonstrated by individuals on both sides amid merciless wholesale slaughter, and the futility of the cause for which ordinary men fought with extraordinary courage and endurance--Gallipoli is a riveting account of a battle that continues to fascinate us close to a hundred years after the event.
