Book Grammatik und Terminologie

Download or read book Grammatik und Terminologie written by Christian Lang and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2020-02-17 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book To be or not to be The Verbum Substantivum from Synchronic Diachronic and Typological Perspectives

Download or read book To be or not to be The Verbum Substantivum from Synchronic Diachronic and Typological Perspectives written by Michail L. Kotin and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The verbs of the 'to be'-group, also called verba substantiva, belong to the most enigmatic phenomena of the human language. Combining a distinct suppletivity of their conjugational forms in most languages with a striking semantic and functional ambiguity, as well as unique syntactic capabilities, they form a very specific class of linguistic entities. They can be referred to, without exaggeration, as one of the conceptually gravest and most "symptomatic" language formations. Typologically, the be-verbs demonstrate, on the one hand, a set of similar features in almost every language, which is excellent evidence of their universal validity. On the other hand, the differences between these verbs in various language groups and even in particular languages are remarkable proof of language relativism. Historically, the be-verbs show a sequence of relevant stages in their formal, semantic and syntactic developments, which in many aspects coincide with their typological and individual, "idioethnic" features and properties. One can trace, among other things, paths and mechanisms of their development and salient changes of their functions in language systems of different types. Especially important are also changes in the form and function of the be-verbs arising from language contact, for they indicate essential tendencies in the evolution of these entities accelerated by the influence of language interaction triggers. The contribution of to be-verbs to the morphology, semantics and syntax of the majority of the languages of the world is substantial from a number of perspectives, and these verbs belong to the most complex and simultaneously central entities of human language. For this reason their analysis must continually be synchronized with the newest results of general linguistic research. This volume, hence, describes and interprets the to be-verbs and constructions in the broad context of contemporary linguistic research, including synchrony, diachrony, diatopy, language contrast and typology.

Book Syntax Theory and Analysis Volume 1

Download or read book Syntax Theory and Analysis Volume 1 written by Tibor Kiss and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook represents the development of research and the current level of knowledge in the fields of syntactic theory and syntax analysis. Syntax can look back to a long tradition. Especially in the last 50 years, however, the interaction between syntactic theory and syntactic analysis has led to a rapid increase in analyses and theoretical suggestions. This second edition of the Handbook on Syntax adopts a unifying perspective and therefore does not place the division of syntactic theory into several schools to the fore, but the increase in knowledge resulting from the fruitful argumentations between syntactic analysis and syntactic theory. It uses selected phenomena of individual languages and their cross-linguistic realizations to explain what syntactic analyses can do and at the same time to show in what respects syntactic theories differ from each other. It investigates how syntax is related to neighbouring disciplines and investigate the role of the interfaces especially the relationship between syntax and phonology, morphology, compositional semantics, pragmatics, and the lexicon. The phenomena chosen bring together renowned experts in syntax, and represent the consensus reached as to what has to be considered as an important as well as illustrative syntactic phenomenon. The phenomena discuss do not only serve to show syntactic analyses, but also to compare theoretical approaches with each other.

Book Terminology Science in Russia today

Download or read book Terminology Science in Russia today written by Larissa A. Manerko and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of terminology has always occupied a unique place in the field of specialized language research. Its object, the terminology of various domains, encompasses more than just the descriptive linguistic level of lexicology and its application, specialized lexicography. Morphology, syntax and the textual level, as well as the role of culture in communication, are all fields in which terminology has its specific functions and potential. In the history of the discipline, several centers for the research and instruction of terminology emerged. However, the study of terminology in Russia has been largely overlooked by its European neighbors. The time has come to offer an in-depth look into the research being performed and to demonstrate the vitality of the current research landscape. Today's terminology research in Russia makes a lasting, balanced impression in this diverse and wide-ranging volume, which presents many ideas for further research.

Book Tropical Truth s

Download or read book Tropical Truth s written by Armin Burkhardt and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010-04-23 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropes are not only rhetorical means, which are used as a creative and / or persuasive linguistic means in poetry and public speech. They are also a cognitive tool which helps people to understand the world and to express their world. As they are the basis on which our worldview and even our everyday speech is founded, the question must be posed as to whether utterances containing tropes can be said to be true. This has been an epistemological problem since Nietzsche expressed his doubts about the possibility that figurative language could give access to truth. However, since then research has paid little attention to this question. ‐18 papers by linguists, philosophers, psychologists and literary scholars have been collected in this volume. Their 21 authors use various approaches or paradigms in order to define metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, irony, euphemism, antonomasia and hyperbole and find an answer to the crucial epistemological questions, namely whether and to what extent utterances containing tropes can be said to be true or false.
