Book Christian Popular Culture from The Chronicles of Narnia to Duck Dynasty

Download or read book Christian Popular Culture from The Chronicles of Narnia to Duck Dynasty written by Eleanor Hersey Nickel and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-05-13 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian popular culture has tremendous influence on many American churchgoers. When we have a choice between studying the Bible and reading novels, downloading movies, or watching television, we become less familiar with Numbers than with Narnia. This book examines popular Christian narratives with rigorous scholarly methods and assumes that they are just as complex, fascinating, and worthy of investigation as the latest secular Netflix series or dystopian novel. While most scholars focus on the religious aspects of Christian texts, this study takes a new approach by analyzing their social responsibility in portraying the complex dynamics of race, class, and gender in a profoundly unequal America. Close readings of six case studies—The Chronicles of Narnia, Francine Rivers’s Redeeming Love, Jan Karon’s Mitford novels, Left Behind, the films of the Sherwood Baptist Church, and Duck Dynasty—uncover both harmful stereotypes and Christians serving as leaders in social justice.

Book excerpt: It seems as if all planets are aligning. Lets not resist and claim Victory. An unpredicted bottle for attention, autonomy, and miracles becoming. Specifically, a surrender to the ways of the outside dynamics where scrupulous attention to details exist. A satiating defeat of the fluctuating nature a material force reacts with. Somehow, this isn't quite what was happening. Therefore, in quintessence was developing, growing from source such as a water well, an oil pipeline, and a damn. Of course, this perpetual lasting experience coupled with inside development brought a “team “ attempt to flourish, prosper from the inside to the outside. Nevertheless, wiping all external forces out which didn’t equate relevantly to the ongoing system. Specifically, the impetus marked by serving as a team brought open-mindedness to take on the Pressure from outside influences. Finally, it truly was the collaborative purpose which followed, en-route, to the purposed solar system-a countering clockwise revolution. This coming from the correct correlation that the quadrants were designed to ultimately become. In other words, the duck acted like a Godsend revelating how people could incorporate a farm into the mainstream outer circle that created an insatiable curiosity for things that’d taught them pleasure –that of the miraculous talking duck.

  • Author : Susan Puckett
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2013-01-25
  • ISBN : 0820344931
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Eat Drink Delta written by Susan Puckett and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mississippi Delta is a complicated and fascinating place. Part travel guide, part cookbook, and part photo essay, Eat Drink Delta by veteran food journalist Susan Puckett (with photographs by Delta resident Langdon Clay) reveals a region shaped by slavery, civil rights, amazing wealth, abject deprivation, the Civil War, a flood of biblical proportions, and—above all—an overarching urge to get down and party with a full table and an open bar. There’s more to Delta dining than southern standards. Puckett uncovers the stories behind convenience stores where dill pickles marinate in Kool-Aid and diners where tabouli appears on plates with fried chicken. She celebrates the region’s hot tamale makers who follow the time-honored techniques that inspired many a blues lyric. And she introduces us to a new crop of Delta chefs who brine chicken in sweet tea and top stone-ground Mississippi grits with local pond-raised prawns and tomato confit. The guide also provides a taste of events such as Belzoni’s World Catfish Festival and Tunica’s Wild Game Cook-Off and offers dozens of tested recipes, including the Memphis barbecue pizza beloved by Elvis and a lemon ice-box pie inspired by Tennessee Williams. To William Faulkner’s suggestion, “To understand the world, you must first understand a place like Mississippi,” Susan Puckett adds this advice: Go to the Delta with an open mind and an empty stomach. Make your way southward in a journey measured in meals, not miles.

Book excerpt: The Cambridge International Workshop on Security Protocols has now run for eight years. Each year we set a theme, focusing upon a speci?c aspect of security protocols, and invite position papers. Anybody is welcome to send us a position paper (yes, you are invited) and we don’t insist they relate to the current theme in an obvious way. In our experience, the emergence of the theme as a unifying threadtakesplaceduringthediscussionsattheworkshopitself.Theonlyground rule is that position papers should formulate an approach to some unresolved issues, rather than being a description of a ?nished piece of work. Whentheparticipantsmeet,wetrytofocusthediscussionsupontheconc- tual issues which emerge. Security protocols link naturally to many other areas of Computer Science, and deep water can be reached very quickly. Afterwards, we invite participants to re-draft their position papers in a way which exposes the emergent issues but leaves open the way to their further development. We also prepare written transcripts of the recorded discussions. These are edited (in some cases very heavily) to illustrate the way in which the di?erent arguments and perspectives have interacted. We publish these proceedings as an invitation to the research community. Although many interesting results ?rst see the light of day in a volume of our proceedings, laying claim to these is not our primary purpose of publication. Rather, we bring our discussions and insights to a wider audience in order to suggest new lines of investigation which the community may fruitfully pursue.

Book A Place Called the Colored Car

Download or read book A Place Called the Colored Car written by Reginald F. Smith Sr. and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Place Called the Colored Car tells the story of Sam, a bright, happy, 10-year-old boy and his epic train ride from Memphis, Tennessee to Chicago, Illinois in the mid-1950s. Sam was born and raised in Memphis, and lived with his mother, Ruth, his grandmother, Beth and his grandfather, Elijah. The racial injustices experienced on that trip were so horrible and so alarming that even through a child’s eyes can see, feel, hear, taste, smell and cry for what people had to endure simply because God blessed them with dark skin. We witness human beings being treated less than our worst imaginable nightmares. The book forces the question we should all ask: “How Could We?”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[Eisenberg] reminds us in every line of certain saving virtues: wit, wild intelligence, great heart, the beauty of the inquiring human voice. If our culture can produce a writer this wonderful, there must be something beautiful about us yet.” — George Saunders Instead of forcing her characters’ stories into neat, arbitrary, preordained shapes, [Eisenberg] allows them to grow organically into oddly shaped, asymmetrical narratives—narratives that possess all the surprising twists and dismaying turns of real life.” — New York Times “Deborah Eisenberg, one of America’s finest writers, offers new ways of seeing and feeling, as if something were being perfected at the core.” — San Francisco Chronicle “Reading [Eisenberg] makes you wish, as you study the family in front of you in the grocery line, that you could see their thoughts rendered as one of Eisenberg’s stunning inner monologues.” — Los Angeles Times “...[S]uperlative and entertaining...Eisenberg is funny, grim, biting, and wise, but always with a light touch and always in the service of worlds that extend far beyond the page. A virtuoso at rendering the flickering gestures by which people simultaneously hide and reveal themselves, Eisenberg is an undisputed master of the short story.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review) “[Eisenberg] is always worth the wait...so instantly absorbing that it feels like an abduction...This book offers no palliatives to its characters or to its readers — no plan of action. But it is a compass.” — The New York Times “Eisenberg is a gorgeous writer...I thank my stars that there’s a writer in the increasingly imperiled world as smart and funny and blazingly moral and devastatingly sidelong as she is.” — New York Times Book Review “Every character is memorable, every situation seizes our attention, and not a single word is out of place...It’s my fervent hope...that someday we’ll have the opportunity to look back on the many more stories that Deborah Eisenberg has yet to write.” — Financial Times
