Book String Theory Research Progress

Download or read book String Theory Research Progress written by Ferenc N. Balogh and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: String theory is a model of fundamental physics whose building blocks are one-dimensional extended objects called strings, rather than the zero-dimensional point particles that form the basis for the standard model of particle physics. The phrase is often used as shorthand for Superstring theory, as well as related theories such as M-theory. By replacing the point-like particles with strings, an apparently consistent quantum theory of gravity emerges. Moreover, it may be possible to 'unify' the known natural forces (gravitational, electromagnetic, weak nuclear and strong nuclear) by describing them with the same set of equations. Studies of string theory have revealed that it predicts higher-dimensional objects called branes. String theory strongly suggests the existence of ten or eleven (in M-theory) space-time dimensions, as opposed to the usual four (three spatial and one temporal) used in relativity theory.

Book Duality and Supersymmetric Theories

Download or read book Duality and Supersymmetric Theories written by David I. Olive and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-07-08 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first systematic introduction to electromagnetic duality and its generalisations. The authors are the leading figures in this exciting new area of mathematical physics, and their lectures have been organised not only to link with each other but also to describe the fundamental ideas, the latest developments, and some earlier work whose significance has only recently become apparent. This will be essential reading for all those working in mathematical physics.

Download or read book Strings 2001 written by Atish Dabholkar and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: String theory, sometimes called the ``Theory of Everything'', has the potential to provide answers to key questions involving quantum gravity, black holes, supersymmetry, cosmology, singularities and the symmetries of nature. This multi-authored book summarizes the latest results across all areas of string theory from the perspective of world-renowned experts, including Michael Green, David Gross, Stephen Hawking, John Schwarz, Edward Witten and others. The book comes out of the``Strings 2001'' conference, organized by the Tata Institute for Fundamental Research (Mumbai, India), the Abdus Salam ICTP (Trieste, Italy), and the Clay Mathematics Institute (Cambridge, MA, USA). Individual articles discuss the study of D-branes, black holes, string dualities, compactifications,Calabi-Yau manifolds, conformal field theory, noncommutative field theory, string field theory, and string phenomenology. Numerous references provide a path to previous findings and results. Written for physicists and mathematicians interested in string theory, the volume is a useful resource for any graduate student or researcher working in string theory, quantum field theory, or related areas.

  • Author : Martin Ammon
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2015-04-09

Download or read book Gauge Gravity Duality written by Martin Ammon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-09 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gauge/gravity duality creates new links between quantum theory and gravity. It has led to new concepts in mathematics and physics, and provides new tools to solve problems in many areas of theoretical physics. This book is the first textbook on this important topic, enabling graduate students and researchers in string theory and particle, nuclear and condensed matter physics to get acquainted with the subject. Focusing on the fundamental aspects as well as on the applications, this textbook guides readers through a thorough explanation of the central concepts of gauge/gravity duality. For the AdS/CFT correspondence, it explains in detail how string theory provides the conjectured map. Generalisations to less symmetric cases of gauge/gravity duality and their applications are then presented, in particular to finite temperature and density, hydrodynamics, QCD-like theories, the quark-gluon plasma and condensed matter systems. The textbook features a large number of exercises, with solutions available online at www.cambridge.org/9781107010345.

Book Strings Branes and Dualities

Download or read book Strings Branes and Dualities written by L. Baulieu and published by Springer. This book was released on 1999 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The June 1997 Cargese summer school focused on the recent progress in supersymmetric quantum field theory and string theory. This volume offers a written account of the material presented during 12 lectures. The theory of Seiberg-Witten and its recent developments are covered in detail. A large section is devoted to the current state of the art in M-theory, in particular its underlying superalgebra as well as its connections with superstrings and N=2 strings. The physics of D-branes and its role in the computation of the black hole entropy are also covered. The final two lectures discuss the matrix approach to non-perturbative string theory. The remainder of the volume contains six seminars, and ten short "Gong Show" presentations of current work. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
