Les interrogations actuelles sur ce qu'il est convenu d'appeler la " crise de la démocratie " ne sont sans doute pas étrangères à cet intérêt renouvelé. La République et le républicanisme ne sont pas au XVIIIe siècle seulement des " traditions " issues de la philosophie antique ou de celle de l'Italie de la Renaissance. II existe en Europe un certain nombre d'États républicains dont l'expérience pratique contribue à former la pensée politique des Lumières. Parmi ceux-ci, la Pologne est l'enjeu d'un débat important sur la question de la modernité du républicanisme. Les deux plus importantes contributions à ce débat ont été celles de Jean-Jacques Rousseau et de Gabriel Bonnot de Mably, tous deux sollicités par les envoyés des " patriotes " polonais en France afin de donner leur avis sur les réformes nécessaires pour sauver la république polonaise. Si le texte des Considérations sur le gouvernement de Pologne de Rousseau (1771) est bien connu, Du gouvernement et des Loix de Pologne (1770-1771) de Mably l'est beaucoup moins. Pourtant le texte de Rousseau est largement inintelligible sans la connaissance de celui de Mably auquel il répond. Ces deux textes s'insèrent par ailleurs dans une discussion beaucoup plus large qui commence au début des années 1760 et s'achève vers 1780 et qui fait de l'histoire de la Pologne un élément important de la réflexion politique des Lumières. Pour replacer la production de Mably dans ce contexte, l'introduction présente la République polonaise et ses institutions, puis les grandes lignes des conflits militaires et diplomatiques qui agitent la Pologne dans les années 1760-1780, avant d'évoquer les principaux thèmes du débat des Lumières sur la Pologne. Cette édition comprend l'intégrale des textes écrits par Mably sur ce sujet : Du Gouvernement et des Loix de Pologne (1770), De la situation de la Pologne en 1776 et Le Banquet des Politiques. Ces documents sont un témoignage de premier plan de la réflexion des Lumières sur la démocratie et la République qui n'a pas épuisé son intérêt aujourd'hui.
