Book excerpt: This NATO Advanced Study Institute (co-sponsored by FEBS and INTAS) under the title "Chemical Probes in Biology" was designed to summarize and disseminate recent expert knowledge regarding a deeper understanding ofbiological phenomena on a molecular level. Such scientific activities -frequently termed Bio-organic Chemistry or Chemical Biology are constituting a highly interdisciplinary branch of chemistry beyond the traditional ways in which chemists and biologists have been working in the past. Thus, on this occasion we were bringing together senior experts from the disciplines of Chemistry and Biology in order to amalgamate their diverse yet basically common interests in this area. Ultimate goal was - next to an exchange of information between the two scientific cultures - the communication ofexciting possibilities in interdisciplinary research to the young scientists present. The meeting was held in the Anargyros and Korgialenios School on the Island ofSpeteses, Greece from 18-30 August 2002. The ASI was attended by a total of 91 scholars from 23 different countries. A group of 27 speakers presented a series of 34 highly stimulating, informative and educational lectures covering a broad range of topics relevant to the general theme ofthis meeting: Science at the InteifaceofChemistry, Biology and Medicine. The lectures were complemented by a total of 89 posters presented by the young scholars and a series of short lectures derived thereof This was clearly one ofthe highlites of the meeting creating a lively atmosphere of interaction and intellectual creativity - typical phenomena for the whole meeting.

Book excerpt: An essential resource for graduate students, academic and industrial toxicologists, and environmental health scientists and professionals Over the course of thirty years and three editions, Introduction to Biochemical Toxicology has been an important source for coverage of the ongoing quest to define the biochemical, cellular, and molecular events induced by toxicants at the cellular and organismic levels. Now, as the principles and methods of molecular and cellular biology as well as genomic sciences play an ever increasing role in mechanistic toxicology, significant changes have been made to the book, resulting in this important new edition-now titled Molecular and Biochemical Toxicology, Fourth Edition. Much more than an introductory text, this crucial new edition has been completely revised to provide timely and thorough coverage of the underlying biochemical, molecular, and cellular mechanisms through which toxicants produce their adverse effects. Toxicological issues are covered from the molecule to the cell to the organ level. Complex methods used in toxicology are also described in a straightforward, easy-to-understand style. Additional features of this new edition include: New chapters that explore the interface between toxicology and genomic sciences, including: bioinformatics, proteomics, metabolomics, and toxicogenomics Increased emphasis on structure, mechanism, and regulation of xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes, toxicogenetics, and xenobiotic transporters Additional new chapters on: molecular epidemiology and genetic susceptibility, DNA damage and mutagenesis, DNA repair, mechanisms of cell death, mitochondrial dysfunction, metals, reproductive toxicology, developmental toxicology, and reactive oxygen/metabolites and toxicity Molecular and Biochemical Toxicology, Fourth Edition guides graduate students, toxicologists, and environmental health professionals through the principles of molecular and biochemical toxicology and the complex mechanisms of toxicity. Whether it's used in the classroom or in industry, research, or academia, this book is essential for anyone interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms through which toxicants produce adverse effects.

Book Purine and Pyrimidine Metabolism in Man IX

Download or read book Purine and Pyrimidine Metabolism in Man IX written by Andrea Griesmacher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: th th This volume comprizes articles presented at the joint IX International and 6 Euro pean Symposium on Purine and Pyrimidine Metabolism in Man held in Gmunden, Austria, June 1 through 7, 1997. Since the first of this series of meetings was held in Israel in 1973, conventions were organized every three years in different parts of the world including the USA, Japan, and Europe. The different aspects of purine and pyrimidine metabolism bring together re searchers working in molecular genetics, biochemical pharmacology, biochemistry, devel opmental biology, immunology, epidemiology and the clinics. Oriented research in the field has been seminal for the development of potent anticancer and antiviral drugs. As the number of genes which are cloned, grows, the understanding of metabolism is increas ingly enlarged and might provide leads to further improve therapeutic concepts and to bet ter understand mechanisms responsible for the development of resistance against these drugs. In certain diseases purine and pyrimidine analogs represent not only the drugs of choice but in fact are the sole therapeutic alternative at present. The field has also taken an early lead in attempting to correct inborn errors of purine and pyrimidine metabolism by gene therapy. The organization of this meeting involved a large number of people who dedicated their time in an effort to make this symposium a success. We thank the Abstract Review Committee, the International Advisory Board and in particular the Symposium Secretariat for doing a wonderful job.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2008-02-02
  • ISBN : 1592595103
  • Pages : 386 pages

Download or read book DNA Sequencing Protocols written by Annette M. Griffin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-02 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of DNA Sequencing Protocols is to provide detailed practical procedures for the widest range of DNA sequencing meth ods, and we believe that all the vanguard techniques now being applied in this fast-evolving field are comprehensively covered. Sequencing technology has advanced at a phenomenal rate since the original methods were first described in the late 1970s and there is now a huge variety of strategies and methods that can be employed to determine the sequence of any DNA of interest. More recently, a large number of new and innovative sequencing techniques have been developed, including the use of such novel polymerases as Tag poly merase and Sequenase, the harnessing of PCR technology for linear amplification (cycle) sequencing, and the advent of automated DNA sequencers. DNA sequencing is surely one of the most important techniques in the molecular biology laboratory. Sequence analysis is providing an increasingly useful approach to the characterization of biological systems, and major multinational projects are already underway to map and sequence the entire genome of organisms, such as Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Caenorhabditis elegans, and Homo sapiens. Most scientists recognize the importance of DNA sequence data and perceive DNA sequencing as a valuable and indispensable aspect of their work. Recent technological advances, especially in the area of automated sequencing, have removed much of the drudg ery that was formerly associated with the technique, whereas innova tive computer software has greatly simplified the analysis and manipulation of sequence data.
