Book excerpt: This book introduces the exciting and fast-moving field of MOEMS to graduate students, scientists, and engineers by providing a foundation of both micro-optics and MEMS that will enable them to conduct future research in the field. Born from the relatively new fields of MEMS and micro-optics, MOEMS are proving to be an attractive and low-cost solution to a range of device problems requiring high optical functionality and high optical performance. MOEMS solutions include optical devices for telecommunication, sensing, and mobile systems such as v-grooves, gratings, shutters, scanners, filters, micromirrors, switches, alignment aids, lens arrays, and hermetic wafer-scale optical packaging. An international team of leading researchers contributed to this book, and it presents examples and problems employing cutting-edge MOEM devices. It will inspire researchers to further advance the design, fabrication, and analysis of MOEM systems.

Book Multiprobe Pressure Testing and Reservoir Characterization

Download or read book Multiprobe Pressure Testing and Reservoir Characterization written by Wilson C Chin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2024-04-01 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiprobe Pressure Testing and Reservoir Characterization: Pressure Transient, Contamination, Liquid and Gas Pumping Analysis provides much-needed three-dimensional pressure transient simulators for job planning and data interpretation in well logging. First, discussions on fundamental concepts present fluid sampling, pressure transient and contamination analysis; physical concepts and numerical approaches; and multiprobe model formulations and validations. Other sections cover four-probe algorithms, including conventional, overbalanced, and underbalanced drilling applications. The final section addresses triple-probe algorithms, which includes coupled models for pressure and contamination convergence acceleration. Notably, Chapter 10 explains how the multiprobe tool’s focus on characterizing permeability will promote better use of the reservoir as well as assist with energy storage in underground rock, demonstrating how multiprobe tools also facilitate the energy transition from fossil fuels to sustainable geothermal energy. The book's mathematical methods are described in a straightforward manner with numerous example calculations and applications demonstrating the practical utility of the approaches. This book is an invaluable reference for petroleum geologists and engineers involved in geothermal and conventional reservoir characterization and simulation. Reviews present day needs, tool operations, and analysis methods, along with numerous practical examples and applications Develops a suite of mathematical models, algorithms, and software from first principles Explains, in detail, how multiprobe pressure logging is superior to using conventional sensors because direct, accurate reservoir characteristics support energy-efficient geothermal designs Provides an alternative look at the investigation of unconventional reservoirs, not only in terms of hydrocarbon production but also with carbon and energy storage in mind

Book Hybridity

  • Author : Vanessa Guignery
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2011-09-22
  • ISBN : 1443833967
  • Pages : 380 pages

Download or read book Hybridity written by Vanessa Guignery and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, the unstable notion of hybridity has been the focus of a number of debates in cultural and literary studies, and has been discussed in connection with such notions as métissage, creolization, syncretism, diaspora, transculturation and in-betweeness. The aim of this volume is to form a critical assessment of the scope, significance and role of the notion in literature and the visual arts from the eighteenth century to the present day. The contributors propose to examine the development and various manifestations of the concept as a principle held in contempt by the partisans of racial purity, a process enthusiastically promoted by adepts of mixing and syncretism, but also a notion viewed with suspicion by those who decry its multifarious and triumphalist dimensions and its lack of political roots. The notion of hybridity is analysed in relation to the concepts of identity, nationhood, language and culture, drawing from the theories of Mikhail Bakhtin, Homi Bhabha, Robert Young, Paul Gilroy and Edouard Glissant, among others. Contributors examine forms of hybridity in the work of such canonical writers as Daniel Defoe, Robert Louis Stevenson, Thomas De Quincey and Victor Hugo, as well as in contemporary American and British fiction, Neo-Victorian and postcolonial literature.
