Book Moisture Content of Seed Cotton in Relation to Cleaning and Ginning Efficiency and Lint Quality Classic Reprint

Griffin Jr. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moisture Content of Seed Cotton in Relation to Cleaning and Ginning Efficiency and Lint Quality The conditioning of cotton with driers increases the effective ness of cleaners in the removal of trash. Laboratory tests have shown that, as the moisture content of the cotton decreases, the amount of trash removed by the cleaners increases. Drying temperatures as high as 300° F° have been observed in gins in an effort to obtain maximum grade improvement, regardless of reduced staple length and bale weight losses which are caused by excessive drying. Field observations showed that higher temperatures are used on machine-picked than on hand-picked cotton, and that gins which are not equipped with lint cleaners employ higher temperatures than do plants so equipped, and that because of the exces sive drying the staple length was shorter at gins without lint cleaners. General practice in commercial gins is to use one or two driers on hand picked cotton, and two or three driers on machine-picked cotton. 'when two or more driers are used, a higher temperature is usually maintained in the first drier with progressively lower temperatures in the remaining units. Field studies showed that intense drying produces doubtful benefits on relatively clean cotton but gives very pronounced grade improvements on machine-picked cotton. Tests have also shown that moisture content affects ginning time. The ginning time becomes progressively greater as the moisture content is reduced. Cottons of low moisture content also offer greater resistance to compression and are often responsible for damage to gin trampers and presses. Download or read book The Story of Cotton Classic Reprint written by W. H. Fortenberry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Cotton After cotton is harvested, it is trans ported by truck or trailer to the gins where the seed cotton is conditioned and cleaned and the fibers are separated from the seed. The fibers after being separated from the seed are called lint, In a single pound of cotton there may be 100 million or more individual fibers. The lint cotton is pressed and packaged into bales at the gin for convenience in handling and the seed is loaded into trucks or freight cars for ship ment to oil mills. In 1972, almost cotton gins in this country were operated through a season ranging from 3 to 6 months. Many of these gins located in the high production areas operate on a 24 hour, 7-day - week basis. Modern cotton gins are equipped with improved ma chinery for drying and cleaning the seed cotton and for cleaning the lint after it is ginned and before it is packaged into bales.
