Book excerpt: In this book, coastal dune specialists from tropical and temperate latitudes cover a wide set of topics, including: geomorphology, community dynamics, ecophysiology, biotic interactions and environmental problems and conservation. The book offers recommendations for future research, identifying relevant topics where detailed knowledge is still lacking. It also identifies management tools that will promote and maintain the rich diversity of the dune environments in the context of continuing coastal development.

Book Potential Impacts of Climate Change in Dry Coastal Ecosystems of British Columbia

Download or read book Potential Impacts of Climate Change in Dry Coastal Ecosystems of British Columbia written by Heather Klassen and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Climate change is impacting forest ecosystems. Climatic envelopes were developed for dry coastal ecosystems and 18 diagnostic plant species in southwestern British Columbia to project current and future suitable climate space. Future projections suggest a northward shift for ecosystem and species, with a reduction in ecosystem climate space and variable results for species climate space. Results suggest that ecosystem climatic envelopes represent cumulative biological complexity and that the ecosystem-level processes and functions cannot be allocated among the species within the plant community. A monitoring network was established to improve understanding and to detect changes in climate, soil, and vegetation relationships, and hence the distribution of ecosystems and species, over time. Baseline summaries detect climatic differences between monitored ecosystems. This climatic envelope research provides a foundation for theoretical development and the field study provides site-specific datasets to improve our understanding of forest ecosystems and our ability to manage land and resources."--P. ii.

Book Coastal Ecosystems in Transition

Download or read book Coastal Ecosystems in Transition written by Thomas C. Malone and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-01-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores how two coastal ecosystems are responding to the pressures of human expansion The Northern Adriatic Sea, a continental shelf ecosystem in the Northeast Mediterranean Sea, and the Chesapeake Bay, a major estuary of the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States, are semi-enclosed, river-dominated ecosystems with urbanized watersheds that support extensive industrial agriculture. Coastal Ecosystems in Transition: A Comparative Analysis of the Northern Adriatic and Chesapeake Bay presents an update of a study published two decades ago. Revisiting these two ecosystems provides an opportunity to assess changing anthropogenic pressures in the context of global climate change. The new insights can be used to inform ecosystem-based approaches to sustainable development of coastal environments. Volume highlights include: Effects of nutrient enrichment and climate-driven changes on critical coastal habitats Patterns of stratification and circulation Food web dynamics from phytoplankton to fish Nutrient cycling, water quality, and harmful algal events Causes and consequences of interannual variability The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals. Read a review of this book in Marine Ecology review of this book

Book The Biology of Coastal Sand Dunes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise but comprehensive introduction to the biology of coastal sand dunes. The emphasis in this book is on the organisms that dominate this predominantly marine environment, although pollution, conservation, management and experimental aspects are considered.

Book Pilot Analysis of Global Ecosystems

Download or read book Pilot Analysis of Global Ecosystems written by Lauretta Burke and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pilot Analysis of Global Ecosystems (PAGE): Coastal Ecosystems analyzes quantitative and qualitative information and develops selected indicators of the condition of the world's coastal ecosystems and marine fisheries. Specifically the study looks at measures that show the degree of human modification of coastal zone and what we know concerning five important goods and services provided by coastal ecosystems: filtering water, food, biodiversity, shoreline stabilization, and tourism. Results from the PAGE analysis show that human activities have extensively altered coastal ecosystems worldwide. Nearly 30 percent of the land area in the world's coastal ecosystems had already been extensively altered or destroyed by growing demand for housing, industry, and recreation. Globally, the number of people living within 100 km of the coast increased from roughly 2 billion in 1990 to 2.2 billion in 1995 four out of every ten people in the world. As coastal and inland populations continue to grow, their impacts in terms of pollutant loads and the development and conversion of coastal habitats can be expected to grow as well. Nutrient pollution has increased dramatically this century due to greater use of fertilizers, growth in quantities of domestic and industrial sewage, and increased aquaculture, which releases considerable amounts of waste directly into the water. Increasing fishing pressure have left many major fish stocks depleted or in decline. Global climate change may compound other pressures on coastal ecosystems through the additional effects of warmer ocean temperatures, altered ocean circulation patterns, changing storm frequency, and rising sea levels.
