Download or read book Montaging Pushkin written by Alexandra Smith and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Montaging Pushkin offers for the first time a coherent view of Pushkin’s legacy to Russian twentieth-century poetry, giving many new insights. Pushkin is shown to be a Russian forerunner of Baudelaire. Furthermore it is argued that the rise of the Russian and European novel largely changed the ways Russian poets have looked at themselves and at poetic language; that novelisation of poetry is detectable in the major works of poetry that engaged in a creative dialogue with Pushkin, and that polyphonic lyric has been achieved. Alexandra Smith locates significant examples of Pushkin’s cinematographic cognition of reality, suggesting that such dynamic descriptions of Petersburg helped create a highly original animated image of the city as comic apocalypse, which followers of Pushkin appropriated very successfully even as far as the late twentieth century. Montaging Pushkin will be of interest to all students of Russian poetry, as well as specialists in literary theory, European studies and the history of ideas.

Download or read book Mary the New Immigrant written by John Tetteh Dziworshie and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-12-10 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wars and other violent conflicts destroy lives immensely. Mary and Daniel, two adolescents from a third-world country, migrated to an industrialised nation. They were horrified by how criminal syndicates in many countries exploited new immigrants. The sorrows of these two people and their friends convey, undoubtedly, the message that economic and political refugees are abused by human traffickers and are also prey of international crime syndicates. The author vividly describes the unfortunate, harsh conditions many immigrants have to grapple with. He does a good job detailing the nefarious activities of drug syndicates with international connections and the difficulty of dealing with hostility and exploitation borne out of ones illegal immigrant status. Is this the prize for escaping war and poverty in search of a decent and peaceful life? The blood that boils, spills over. Where does war end and peace begin? What of the ordinary, innocent lives ruined by political upheaval? The book is a classic mixed bag of optimism, despondency, admonishment, and suspense that is succinctly presented to keep the reader glued until the last word. It details the lives, experiences, and observations of these two youths in a thrilling fashion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection assembles the best interviews from Steve Cushing's long-running radio program Blues Before Sunrise, the nationally syndicated, award-winning program focusing on vintage blues and R&B. As both an observer and performer, Cushing has been involved with the blues scene in Chicago for decades. His candid, colorful interviews with prominent blues players, producers, and deejays reveal the behind-the-scenes world of the formative years of recorded blues. Many of these oral histories detail the careers of lesser-known but greatly influential blues performers and promoters. The book focuses in particular on pre–World War II blues singers, performers active in 1950s Chicago, and nonperformers who contributed to the early blues world. Interviewees include Alberta Hunter, one of the earliest African American singers to transition from Chicago's Bronzeville nightlife to the international spotlight, and Ralph Bass, one of the greatest R&B producers of his era. Blues expert, writer, record producer, and cofounder of Living Blues Magazine Jim O'Neal provides the book's foreword.

Download or read book Golden Pebbles written by Tritia Hamilton and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With her drum and the Songs of Intention and Celebration author Tritia Hamilton has been keeping an appointment with the sunrise each morning for more than seven years. The songs beckon, smooth the pathway and celebrate our arrival into the New Garden Earth. From an island on the coastline of Maine to the high desert in the American Southwest and back to coastal Maine once again, Golden Pebbles traces an adventure of discovery which began while journeying to the sound of a Native American drumming rhythm. "It was a journey from which I emerged astonished. 'I heard singing, ' I said to the drummer. 'You heard the voices of the ancestors, ' he replied quietly." The ancestor voices stirred a memory into the past, and into the future -- multiple layers converging in now. Eventually there were songs to sing -- to the heartbeat rhythm of the drum. Golden Pebbles is the story behind the ceremonial songs, the sunrise drumming ceremonies and the joyful radiating of a cohesive intention and direction. The lyrics for three dozen Songs of Intention and Celebration are included in Golden Pebbles. For more information about the songs, see: www.goldenpebblepathway.me
Download or read book Becoming Dad written by Leonard Pitts, Jr. and published by Agate Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatherless black family is a problem that grows to bigger proportions every year as generations of black children grow up without an adult male in their homes. As this dire pattern grows worse, what can men do who hope to break it, when there are so few models and so little guidance in their own homes and communities? Where can they learn to “become Dad?” When Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Pitts—who himself grew up with an abusive father whose absences came as a relief—interviewed dozens of men across the country, he found both discouragement and hope, as well as deep insights into his own roles as son and father. An unflinching investigation, both personal and journalistic, of black fatherhood in America, this is the best, most pivotal book on this profoundly important issue.
