Percussion can create sonic colors that conjure images in one’s mind. It can imitate animals, weather, nature, people, and machines. In the theater pit orchestra, the percussionist is an integral part of the story. Throughout Broadway’s history, the role of the percussionist has been continually developing. As the Broadway musical developed, percussionists were constantly challenged to expand their knowledge with new techniques, genres, and equipment to adapt. Despite the technical skills required and the popularity of the Broadway musical, there is very little instructional material for percussionists to prepare for work in the genre. This study aims to identify how percussion has been used as theatrical accompaniment in the Broadway pit orchestra, to track its historical evolution, and to identify the skills necessary for the contemporary percussionist pursuing theater performance. By examining various historical aspects of theater, percussion instruments, musical works, and performance techniques, a clear path emerges for a percussionist. Modern pit percussionists are expected to be fluent in a continually expanding repertoire, including orchestral, drum set, world, and electronic percussion. While the demands of this type of performance can be heavy, this study examines percussion theater performance through a historical lens by breaking down various musical elements."--

He worked alongside Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, and Frederick Loewe on much of the Broadway canon, eventually providing orchestrations for all or part of more than 300 musicals between 1920 and 1975. This work is the first publication of Bennett's autobiography, which was written in the late 1970s. It also includes eight of his most important essays on the art of orchestration. George J. Ferencz is Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.
