Book excerpt: As the twenty-first century unfolds society is confronted with the normalization of warfare and political violence and their growing allure for the young. Current global political events highlight the extent to which young people have become the target of both State and non-State actors in the prosecution of war and terror. The conduct of what we can refer to as "social war" has increasingly come to target the young through media (social media, the internet and video games) and more directly through acts of violence (the massacre of children, the reliance on child soldiers, and the use of children in martyrdom operations) as legitimate forms of conduct. The appropriation of the young as political and military materials through the processes of both radicalization and militarization warrants close examination. Drumbeat examines these issues within the context of the ongoing process of militarization and the establishment of a state of perpetual warfare. The book distinguishes between radicalization, which refers to the application of propaganda and ideological methods by non-State agents, and militarization, which refers to the application of propaganda and ideological methods by State agents in order to effectively prosecute war. The focus of this book will be an examination of the mechanisms through which forms of media and other digital and web-based artefacts – social media, video and video games - assist in the militarization and radicalization of the young. There is a growing body of evidence which points to the effectiveness of various forms of media in both the recruitment of young people and the promotion of ideological frames. For example, non-State actors (extremist religious groups and the Alt-Right) have been highly effective in appropriating new media to project their propaganda messages and their appeal to young people. The book also argues that militarization has become a powerful societal force, which is re-configuring the daily conduct of life in the West. Just as radicalization seeks to prepare the young for the conduct of war, militarization also functions to position the broader society for war. This is a new form of the "civilizing process" to which Norbert Elias referred. In this context new media provides the conduits through which this process is legitimized, celebrated and promulgated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first eight months of 1942, German submarines sank nearly 400 Allied freighters and tankers along the U.S. Atlantic coast with a loss of more than 5,000 merchant seamen and sailors--twice the number of fatalities at Pearl Harbor. This book helps readers understand the complexities of the long Battle of the Atlantic by examining those disastrous early days of war and following the U-boats into action. The book traces the voyages of five U-boats to their destinations as they sink twenty-five ships unmolested by the U.S. Navy, which failed to follow through on British intelligence warnings. It also provides a compilation of personal stories from crewmen and officers of U-123 and from the Allied sailors and merchant seamen cast adrift in lifeboats by the U-boat's torpedoes. A bestseller when first published in 1990, it is now back in print as a trade paperback.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Tibet’s notorious master of Buddhist sorcery—translated for the first time into English An essential sacred text of Tibetan Buddhism, The All-Pervading Melodious Drumbeat tells the wondrous story of Ra Lotsawa Dorjé Drak. Though he was canonized as a saint and a fully enlightened buddha, the eleventh-century Ra Lotsawa’s life story presents a darker path than those taken by Siddhartha Gautama and Milarepa. Viewed by some as a murderous villain and by others as a liberator of human suffering, Ra Lotsawa used his formidable power and magical abilities to defeat his rivals, accumulate wealth, and amass a devoted following. His life offers a rare view into the often overlooked roles of magic and sorcery in the Buddhist tradition. Despite this sinister legacy, his fame also rests on an illustrious career as a translator of Buddhist scriptures, through which he helped spark a renaissance of Buddhism in Tibet. This spirited new translation gives readers in English their first opportunity to encounter one of the most colorful and memorable figures in Tibetan Buddhist history. Book Let the Drum Beat

Download or read book Let the Drum Beat written by Stanley D. Solvick and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the volunteer militia in Detroit is rich with heroic figures, tales of leadership, bravery, and camaraderie. Author Stanley Solvick provides a fascinating chronicle of the origins and development of Detroit's Light Guard. From their beginnings in Anglo-Saxon England, citizen-soldiers have served in defense of their communities. In the New World, early settlements, far from the mother country, utilized citizen-soldiers drawn from their own population to supplement the small forces of regular troops. Detroit's oldest militia unit, under the leadership of the city's founder, Antoine de la Mathe Cadillac, safeguarded the riverfront community from the area's Indian population. By 1830, a permanent volunteer militia had been organized in the region. Author Solvick details the Guards' origins, tracing their transformation from Brady's Guards to the Light Guard, their involvement in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, the two World Wars, and their progression into the Space Age. In addition to encountering a number of individuals who shaped and guided the Light Guard in its evolution, readers will come across many whose names have become commonplace in present-day Detroit: Colonel Augustus B. Woodward and Governor Lewis B. Cass. Let the Drum Beat celebrates the Light Guard's tradition of service to the city of Detroit, the state, and the nation and provides a colorful new chapter to the rich history of the region.
