Download or read book Celtic Mythology written by Philip Freeman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people have heard of the Celts--the elusive, ancient tribal people who resided in present-day England, Ireland, Scotland and France. Paradoxically characterized as both barbaric and innocent, the Celts appeal to the modern world as a symbol of a bygone era, a world destroyed by the ambition of empire and the spread of Christianity throughout Western Europe. Despite the pervasive cultural and literary influence of the Celts, shockingly little is known of their way of life and beliefs, because very few records of their stories exist. In this book, for the first time, Philip Freeman brings together the best stories of Celtic mythology. Everyone today knows about the gods and heroes of the ancient Greeks, such as Zeus, Hera, and Hercules, but how many people have heard of the Gaulish god Lugus or the magical Welsh queen Rhiannon or the great Irish warrior Cú Chulainn? We still thrill to the story of the Trojan War, but the epic battles of the Irish Táin Bó Cuailgne are known only to a few. And yet those who have read the stories of Celtic myth and legend-among them writers like J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis-have been deeply moved and influenced by these amazing tales, for there is nothing in the world quite like them. In these stories a mysterious and invisible realm of gods and spirits exists alongside and sometimes crosses over into our own human world; fierce women warriors battle with kings and heroes, and even the rules of time and space can be suspended. Captured in vivid prose these shadowy figures-gods, goddesses, and heroes-come to life for the modern reader.

Book excerpt: “A clear, accessible, and forthright exploration of Celtic tradition as the foundation of a personal path of mystical transformation.” —John Michael Greer, former Grand Archdruid, Ancient Order of Druids in America, and author of The Druidry Handbook The Druids were the mystics, philosophers, and magicians of the ancient Celtic world. The Mysteries of Druidry reveals this mystical romanticism as it was in ancient times, and shows various ways to bring it to life today. It includes: A professionally researched survey of Druidic history, tradition, and customs Detailed descriptions of the mysteries of Celtic spirituality, including the Sacred Truth, the Great Marriage, the Hero’s Journey, and the Otherworld Practical guidance for meditation and ceremony, for individuals and for groups The Celtic story of the creation of the world, presented together with a plan for re-enacting the story in ritual “An exemplary look at one man’s approach to Druidism, with excellent food for thought and suggestions for group ritual and personal practice . . . His personal stories of working with and discovering the spirits of the land are inspiring and useful guides to the readers.” —Erynn Laurie, author of A Circle of Stones, cofounder of the Inis Glas Hedge School “With gentle clarity, [Myers] writes not only of myth, folklore, and Celtic history, but also of and for our Celtic present. With his words, he inspires, calling the reader to breathe in the songs of the ancestors, and so to sing those songs with both a celebratory pride and a profound relevance for today.” —Emma Restall Orr, Joint Chief of the British Druid Order; author of Kissing the Hag

Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... SLAVIC MYTHOLOGY CHAPTER I BELIEF IN SOUL AND GENII IN Slavic belief the soul is a being quite distinct from the, body, which it is free to leave even during life, so that there are many stories of human souls coming forth from the bodies of sleeping persons and either dwelling in trees or, in the shape of white birds, fluttering about in the world and finally returning to their normal habitations. It is inadvisable to go to bed thirsty, lest the soul, wearied by its search for water, may weaken the body. If a man faints, his soul leaves his body and uneasily flutters about the world; but when it returns, consciousness is likewise restored. Some individuals have lain like dead for three days, during which time their souls dwelt in the other world and beheld all that might be seen either in heaven or in paradise. A soul which leaves the body when asleep and flies about in the world is called Vjedogonja or Zduh, Zduhacz ("Spirit") by the Serbs; and not only the souls of sleeping persons, but even those of fowls and domestic animals, such as cats, dogs, oxen, etc., may be transformed into Zduhaczs. These genii, regardless of nationality, sex, or age, assemble on mountain-tops, where they battle either singly or in troops, the victors bringing to their countrymen a rich harvest and success in breeding cattle; but if a man's soul perishes in this fight, he will never awake. In Montenegro a distinction is drawn between Zduhaczs of land and sea, the former causing drought, and the latter rain, so that the weather depends on which of these two wins. A sudden storm points to a battle among such Zduhaczs; but in all other respects these genii are considered good and sensible and stand in high repute. The Montenegrins personify the soul as Sjen or Sjenovik ("Shado...

Book Celtic Mythology and Religion

Download or read book Celtic Mythology and Religion written by Alexander Macbain and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of Mythology, strictly defined, embraces the fabulous events believed in by a nation and the religious doctrines implied in these. But the term is for convenience' sake extended so as to include the kindred subject of folk-lore. Now folk-lore includes all those popular stories of which the fairy tales of our nursery are a good illustration, and where the religious element implied in Mythology is absent. The term Celtic Mythology, in these papers, is understood, therefore, to include the popular traditions and legendary tales of the Celts, the fabulous actions and exploits of their heroes and deities, the traditions of their early migrations, their fairy tales, and the popular beliefs in regard to the supernatural world. The scope of the discussion will include an introductory section or two on the general principles of Mythology - its cause and spread, and the connection of the Mythology of the Celts with those of the kindred nations of Europe and Asia.
