Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get a fresh perspective on the day-to-day use of medicine! A Social History of Medicines in the Twentieth Century explores the most perplexing issues concerning the uses of prescriptions and other medicines on both sides of the Atlantic. The book equips you with a thorough understanding of the everyday use of medicine in the United States, Canada, and Britain, concentrating on its recent past. Dr. John K. Crellin, author of several influential books on the history of medicine and pharmacy, addresses vital topics such as: the emergence of prescription-only medicines; gate-keeping roles for pharmacists; the role of the drugstore; and the rise of alternative medicines. A Social History of Medicines in the Twentieth Century adds the historical perspective missing from most medical and pharmaceutical literature about trends in the day-to-day use of medicines in society. The book is essential reading for anyone taking regular medication, either as self-care or by a physician’s prescription. Topics discussed include the non-scientific factors that validate medicines, the relevance of the control of narcotics, marketing strategies used by the pharmaceutical industry, the changing authority of physicians and pharmacists, over-the-counter medicines, tonics and sedatives, and patient compliance—and non-compliance. A Social History of Medicines in the Twentieth Century also addresses: medicines for weakness (“health” foods, fortifiers, digestives/laxatives) poison and pharmacy legislation placebos tranquilizers and antidepressants hormones side-effects psychoactive medications herbal medicines a brief history of the use of medicines from the 17th to 19th centuries suggestions for future policies and much more! A Social History of Medicines in the Twentieth Century is equally vital as a professional resource for physicians, pharmacists, and health care administrators, as a classroom guide for academics working in the medical and pharmaceutical fields, and as a resource for patients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive volume to describe the origin of nursing malpractice and the morbidity and mortality associated with it, Nursing Negligence examines the legal aspects of malpractice and presents an overview of common nursing malpractice. This sophisticated volume answers frequently asked questions by defining nursing malpractice and by demonstrating how it can be identified and prevented. Author Janet Pitts Beckmann explores malpractice issues in a wide variety of settings including the emergency room, psychiatric unit, medical unit, operating room, recovery room, surgical unit, pediatric unit, labor room, delivery room, and the newborn nursery. Using the quantitative and qualitative scholarly approach, this informative volume presents research findings from actual malpractice cases in a clear and approachable manner. Additionally, Beckmann addresses common adverse nursing care outcomes, characteristics of patients experiencing negative outcomes, nursing care problems, frequent departures from the standard of nursing care that cause injury and death, mechanisms of injury, costs associated with malpractice, and risk prevention strategies. Finally, common preventable nursing care problems are discussed, and strategies to improve care are developed. An honest, straightforward examination of a serious nursing problem, Nursing Negligence is essential reading for all practicing nurses and nurse administrators and an indispensable text for nursing courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level. "This is a more scholarly approach than is usually used in nursing textbooks. Nursing outcomes are of increasing importance, and using research findings to plan nursing interventions is important." --Ann Marriner-Tomey, R.N., Ph.D., F.A.A.N., Indiana State University

Book Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Safety

Download or read book Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Safety written by Sonia Macleod and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how regulatory and liability mechanisms have impacted upon product safety decisions in the pharmaceutical and medical devices sectors in Europe, the USA and beyond since the 1950s. Thirty-five case studies illustrate the interplay between the regulatory regimes and litigation. Observations from medical practice have been the overwhelming means of identifying post-marketing safety issues. Drug and device safety decisions have increasingly been taken by public regulators and companies within the framework of the comprehensive regulatory structure that has developed since the 1960s. In general, product liability cases have not identified or defined safety issues, and function merely as compensation mechanisms. This is unsurprising as the thresholds for these two systems differ considerably; regulatory action can be triggered by the possibility that a product might be harmful, whereas establishing liability in litigation requires proving that the product was actually harmful. As litigation normally post-dates regulatory implementation, the 'private enforcement' of public law has generally not occurred in these sectors. This has profound implications for the design of sectoral regulatory and liability regimes, including associated features such as extended liability law, class actions and contingency fees. This book forms a major contribution to the academic debate on the comparative utility of regulatory and liability systems, on public versus private enforcement, and on mechanisms of behaviour control.
