Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With people aged 65 years and older currently making up the fastest growing age group throughout the world, the demographic revolution of an aging society will inevitably lead to increased pressure to develop a rationalistic and age-tailored process of diagnosis and treatment among the elderly. As aging people often suffer from several chronic diseases and are being treated with multiple medications concurrently, unwanted drug interactions occur more frequently. Whereas recent approaches have recommended to remove particular drugs from the medication regimen to avoid adverse effects, Drug Therapy for the Elderly underlines both indispensable and dispensable elements of drug treatment in order to provide an overall assessment of drugs suitable for the aged. In view of the multimorbidity and polypharmacy situations experienced by elderly patients, this book takes into account the special needs and requirements shown by this group, thus serving as a timely reference for physicians who treat the elderly.

Download or read book Aging and Drug Therapy written by G. Barbagallo-Sangiorgi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest advances in Geriatric Medicine during the last quarter of a century has been the increased realization of the possibilities of treatment for elderly patients. Neglect has been replaced by a more optimistic therapeutic endeavour and countless old people have benefitted from this approach. But there is also a drawback, and this is the risk of hazardous side effects of medication which are often directly proportional to the biological potency of the drug and may be unpredictably increased due to changes in the senile organism. In fact the anatomical and biological changes in old age alter both the kinetics of most drugs and the receptor response. On account of these changes the individual tolerance of aged patients to drug therapy may be quite different from that of younger subjects. Thus for a variety of reasons elderly patients receive more drugs, but they are at a higher risk of encountering adverse reactions, which often show atypical clinical features. We can therefore speak of "geriatric iatrogenic disorders" and point out that some of these side effects are determined by a complex pathogenesis due to the particular pathophysiological condition in the elderly. It is important to encourage the habit of individ ually evaluating potential risk versus expected advantages of drugs in keeping with the same principles adopted in the evaluation of cost/benefit ratio.

Book Geriatric Drug Therapy Interventions

Download or read book Geriatric Drug Therapy Interventions written by James W Cooper and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-02-02 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medication costs and common drug-related problems, such as misapplication of therapy, medication misuse, and adverse effects, can often be avoided or reduced. Geriatric Drug Therapy Interventions will help you get better outcomes with your patients as it points out pitfalls to avoid and provides you with logical principles for administering drug therapy. Offering guidelines, advice, and gentle reminders, this book shows you the importance of properly documenting patient problems and of considering the entire medical history of your patients. It also helps you perform fall and psychoactive drug risk assessments and address under-recognized and undertreated problems such as malnutrition, depression, sensory deficits, anemia, osteoporosis, and pressure ulcers. As Geriatric Drug Therapy Interventions clarifies, increased consultant pharmacist involvement in comprehensive pharmaceutical services results in the reduction of drug-related problems and medication-associated costs with long-term care patients. Using this book's helpful and substantive interventions, you can improve clinical, economic, and humanistic outcomes in your practice. For this purpose, Geriatric Drug Therapy Interventions discusses: a study designed to teach pharmacy students to identify, document, solve, and prevent medication-related problems providing patient-focused care and assuming responsibility for patient outcomes reimbursing pharmacists for performing cognitive service and cost-savings activities how the prevalence of drug-related problems that influence the need for hospital and nursing home admissions increases with age reasons for patient noncompliance NSAID-associated gastritis, gastrointestinal bleeding, drug-induced delirium, incontinence, and constipation why the advent of managed care does not bode well for the overall health outcomes of the elderly Pharmacists, physicians, and other health care providers can't control all aspects of drug use, but there are many practical steps you can take to help your patients use their prescriptions appropriately. Geriatric Drug Therapy Interventions will help you monitor the efficacy of drug therapy, guide patients who are exasperated with being poked, prodded, and barraged with medications, and work together to develop therapy patterns and schedules that are effective and comfortable.

Book Drug related problems in the elderly

Download or read book Drug related problems in the elderly written by Patrik Midlöv and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-07 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug-related problems in the elderly is intended to serve as a source of information and clinical support in geriatric pharmacotherapy for students as well as all health care professionals, e.g. physicians, nurses and pharmacists. Pharmacotherapy is of great importance to all mankind. Drugs are however powerful and must be handled appropriately. This is especially important for elderly patients. Drug-related problem is not a major subject in most university programmes in medicine or pharmacy. When there is no speci c course, there is often no book covering the topic. In our view, as teachers at various university courses, there has been a shortage of literature that re ects the most important aspects of drug-related problems in the elderly. Medical practitioners, nurses and pharmacists, need to have this knowledge to be able to serve their patients in the best way. This book covers most aspects of drug-related problems in the elderly. With b- ter knowledge of drug-related dif culties and risks we hope that elderly will have fewer drug-related problems and bene t more from their pharmacotherapy.

Book Urinary Incontinence in the Elderly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirteen million Americans and at least half of the 1.5 million nursing home residents in the U.S. experience urinary incontinence (UI), yet many people go without treatment because they feel embarrassed or don't realize that UI is highly responsive to treatment. In no time at all, you will be able to implement effective treatment plans that are consistent with your patients'conditions, goals, and wishes. In addition to its practical techniques and steps for managing acute and chronic UI, Urinary Incontinence in the Elderly contains tables and charts that will help you diagnose the patient's condition, identify the causes for UI, and select appropriate treatment methods. The book also gives you a list of helpful questions to assist you in the identification and assessment of UI and sample bladder records so that you or your patient can keep track of voluntary and involuntary urine voidings. To further increase your understanding of UI and its management, this helpful guidebook discusses: teaching women about gestational and postpartum pelvic muscle exercises proper bladder-emptying techniques behavioral, pharmacologic, and surgical treatment of UI risk factors associated with UI, such as low fluid intake, high-impact physical activities, diabetes, and estrogen depletion stress incontinence how your body makes, stores, and releases urine ensuring proper care of long-term residents Urinary Incontinence in the Elderly will help consumers and caregivers treat and manage UI, but it will also enable them to work together to target and alleviate specific risk factors before UI even sets in. Don't let UI go untreated--with dedicated teamwork and this book's advice and suggestions, you can overcome it, or at least manage it, with surprising levels of success.

Book Pharmacokinetics and Drug Interactions in the Elderly and Special Issues in Elderly African American Populations

Download or read book Pharmacokinetics and Drug Interactions in the Elderly and Special Issues in Elderly African American Populations written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-08-25 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reports in the popular press about the increasing longevity of Americans and the aging of the baby boom generation are constant reminders that the American population is becoming older. Consequently, an issue of growing medical, health policy, and social concern is the appropriate and rational use of medications by the elderly. Although becoming older does not necessarily correlate with increasing illness, aging is associated with anatomical and physiological changes that affect how medications are metabolized by the body. Furthermore, aging is often related to an increased frequency of chronic illness (often combined with multiple health problems) and an increased use of medications. Thus, a better understanding of the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs; of the physiologic responses to those medications; as well as of the interactions among multiple medications is crucial for improving the health of older people.

Book excerpt: The progressive growth in the number of older adults worldwide has led to a modification of the current healthcare scenario and a parallel increase in the use of public resources. In this book, we propose a conceptual framework within which aging, frailty, and care are analyzed through the lens of complexity medicine. Therefore, we present a multidimensional perspective that takes into account biomedical, (neuro)psychological, and socio-ecological vulnerability. The theses presented are the result of an inductive approach, based on many years of experience in the field, which has made it possible to identify strategies for frailty recognition and effective responses even in complicated clinical settings. The book is intended to be a tool of concrete and easy consultation, rich in reflections and suggestions.
