Book excerpt: Is pharmacology getting you down? Is the list of drugs or medications you must learn daunting? Are the names obscure and obtuse? To learn medications you need to learn their names. If the names make no sense, looking as if someone dumped scrabble pieces onto the table, then there is no "hook" for you to remember them. The author breaks down the generic name and a trade name, for over 400 medications, showing you where the name came from. This will help give you a hook to learn the medications and will give you some interesting facts about them. The author spent five years compiling this book. He did it to learn medication names while attending paramedic school and nursing school which are two of his six degrees: He has three associates degrees, a bachelors, a masters degree, and a professional degree. The authors says some of the name meanings were easy to find but the majority took research into the medications' researchers, history, discovery, design, synthesis, organic chemistry, patents, developers, or marketers. Finding this information helped to change those mysterious and obtuse names into ones that could be understood and hooked into memory.

This book was released on 2020-04-24 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many who serve in the United States Armed Forces and who are deployed to distant locations around the world, myriad health threats are encountered. In addition to those associated with the disruption of their home life and potential for combat, they may face distinctive disease threats that are specific to the locations to which they are deployed. U.S. forces have been deployed many times over the years to areas in which malaria is endemic, including in parts of Afghanistan and Iraq. Department of Defense (DoD) policy requires that antimalarial drugs be issued and regimens adhered to for deployments to malaria-endemic areas. Policies directing which should be used as first and as second-line agents have evolved over time based on new data regarding adverse events or precautions for specific underlying health conditions, areas of deployment, and other operational factors At the request of the Veterans Administration, Assessment of Long-Term Health Effects of Antimalarial Drugs When Used for Prophylaxis assesses the scientific evidence regarding the potential for long-term health effects resulting from the use of antimalarial drugs that were approved by FDA or used by U.S. service members for malaria prophylaxis, with a focus on mefloquine, tafenoquine, and other antimalarial drugs that have been used by DoD in the past 25 years. This report offers conclusions based on available evidence regarding associations of persistent or latent adverse events.

Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of the Year by The New Yorker and The Boston Globe An authoritative, illuminating, and deeply humane history of addiction—a phenomenon that remains baffling and deeply misunderstood despite having touched countless lives—by an addiction psychiatrist striving to understand his own family and himself “Carl Erik Fisher’s The Urge is the best-written and most incisive book I’ve read on the history of addiction. In the midst of an overdose crisis that grows worse by the hour and has vexed America for centuries, Fisher has given us the best prescription of all: understanding. He seamlessly blends a gripping historical narrative with memoir that doesn’t self-aggrandize; the result is a full-throated argument against blaming people with substance use disorder. The Urge is a propulsive tour de force that is as healing as it is enjoyable to read.” —Beth Macy, author of Dopesick Even after a decades-long opioid overdose crisis, intense controversy still rages over the fundamental nature of addiction and the best way to treat it. With uncommon empathy and erudition, Carl Erik Fisher draws on his own experience as a clinician, researcher, and alcoholic in recovery as he traces the history of a phenomenon that, centuries on, we hardly appear closer to understanding—let alone addressing effectively. As a psychiatrist-in-training fresh from medical school, Fisher was soon face-to-face with his own addiction crisis, one that nearly cost him everything. Desperate to make sense of the condition that had plagued his family for generations, he turned to the history of addiction, learning that the current quagmire is only the latest iteration of a centuries-old story: humans have struggled to define, treat, and control addictive behavior for most of recorded history, including well before the advent of modern science and medicine. A rich, sweeping account that probes not only medicine and science but also literature, religion, philosophy, and public policy, The Urge illuminates the extent to which the story of addiction has persistently reflected broader questions of what it means to be human and care for one another. Fisher introduces us to the people who have endeavored to address this complex condition through the ages: physicians and politicians, activists and artists, researchers and writers, and of course the legions of people who have struggled with their own addictions. He also examines the treatments and strategies that have produced hope and relief for many people with addiction, himself included. Only by reckoning with our history of addiction, he argues—our successes and our failures—can we light the way forward for those whose lives remain threatened by its hold. The Urge is at once an eye-opening history of ideas, a riveting personal story of addiction and recovery, and a clinician’s urgent call for a more expansive, nuanced, and compassionate view of one of society’s most intractable challenges.

Book Decoding Greek and Latin roots in English Part 3 4

Download or read book Decoding Greek and Latin roots in English Part 3 4 written by DAVID YAO and published by Legoo Mandarin. This book was released on with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking to expand your English vocabulary in a unique and smart way? Look no further than decoding Greek and Latin roots in English! These ancient roots form the gene of modern English vocabulary, and by unlocking their meanings, you can easily understand and remember even the most difficult words. In this book, I will explore how many English words are formed by combining prefixes and suffixes with basic root words, which are mostly derived from Latin and Greek. Similarly, Chinese language also contains Radicals which provide hints to the word's meaning. By understanding the root words, we can "decode" new words and quickly grasp their meanings. Whether you're a non-native English speaker looking to improve your vocabulary or a native speaker wanting to expand your knowledge, this book will provide you with the tools to do so. Using my experience as a native Chinese speaker who learned English later in life, I have developed unique strategies for understanding and remembering English words. Through my work in data mining and creating a Chinese-English vocabulary database, I have discovered nearly one million entries that enable me to identify vocabulary with the same root. The List of Greek and Latin roots in English provided by resources such as Wikipedia have also been invaluable in my research. In this book, I will provide a comprehensive alphabetical list of prefixes and suffixes, with a special focus on those used in medical terminology. By understanding the meanings of these roots, you will be able to easily remember difficult medical terms and other complex vocabulary. In summary, decoding Greek and Latin roots in English is a smart and unique way to expand your English vocabulary. With the tools and strategies provided in this book, you'll be well on your way to mastering even the most challenging words.
