Download or read book Drug Delivery Challenges and Novel Therapeutic Approaches for Retinal Diseases written by Christopher L. Cioffi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-23 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the current state of ocular drug therapy and future therapeutic opportunities for a wide variety of conditions, including Age-related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Edema, Glaucoma, and Inherited Retinal Diseases. Retinal diseases are major contributors to moderate or severe vision impairment in adults aged 50 years and older. The respective patient populations for many of these indications is expected to significantly increase as the world population continues to grow older. An improved understanding of the etiological underpinnings of ocular degenerative diseases over the past decade has significantly bolstered ophthalmic drug discovery. In this volume, contributions from leading experts explore the unique challenges faced for ocular drug discovery and delivery providing the reader with detailed information on ocular pharmacokinetics, in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo models for retinal disease pathology and emerging gene therapy treatments. The book is intended for all researchers and clinicians who wish to increase their knowledge on the latest findings in ocular drug therapy.

Book Cell Based Therapy for Degenerative Retinal Disease

Download or read book Cell Based Therapy for Degenerative Retinal Disease written by Marco A. Zarbin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses why specific diseases are being targeted for cell-based retinal therapy, what evidence exists that justifies optimism for this approach, and what challenges must be managed in order to bring this technology from the laboratory into routine clinical practice. There are a number of unanswered questions (e.g., surgical approach to cell delivery, management of immune response, optimum cell type to transplant) that very likely are not going to be answered until human trials are undertaken, but there is a certain amount of “de-risking” that can be done with preclinical experimentation. This book is essential reading for scientists, clinicians, and advanced students in stem cell research, cell biology, and ophthalmology.

Book Ocular Pharmacology Recent Breakthroughs and Unmet Needs

Download or read book Ocular Pharmacology Recent Breakthroughs and Unmet Needs written by Claudio Bucolo and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research on ocular pharmacology has increased significantly, over the past decade. More recently, the discovery and approval of eye disease modifying treatments is considered an unbelievable scientific breakthrough. Anti-VEGF molecules, cell therapy and gene therapy for age-related retinal degeneration, autologous corneal cells replacement, and Leber’s congenital amaurosis to name a few as some impressive examples. New drugs have been recently introduced for the treatment of glaucoma focusing on new pharmacological targets, such as Rho kinase inhibitors. For example, such novel treatments have been approved for optic neuromyelitis spectrum disorders. Regarding diseases of the front of the eye, advances have been reached with approval of recombinant Nerve Growth Factor (cenegermin) for treatment of neurotrophic keratitis. New discoveries and treatments recently introduced in ophthalmology should promote new efforts and encourage research in ocular pharmacology. It is noteworthy that several medical unmet needs remain in the field of ocular diseases, particularly for glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Early stages of DR or dry AMD need a cure and glaucoma deserves a new therapeutic approach in terms of retinal ganglion cells protection. Furthermore, current pharmacological treatments of glaucoma do not address one major issue underlying the pathology: neuroinflammation. When it comes to dry eye disorders, novel ophthalmic formulations and research findings focusing on immunomodulatory responses are welcomed to provide new insights on these conditions. Finally, one of the most challenging aspects in ocular pharmacology is related to ocular drug delivery. This Research Topic would like to address and discuss important medical unmet needs, and include a tangible contribution to handle sight threatening diseases that have a devastating impact not only for the patients but also for the healthcare system. This Research Topic aims to translate new basic science into clinically breakthrough therapies to help patients faced with debilitating ocular diseases. The Topic welcomes submissions of Original Research, Reviews, Clinical trials, and Case Reports articles that cover the following topics, but not limited to: • Diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers as potential pharmacological target of eye diseases (glaucoma, retinal diseases, ocular surface diseases). • Investigation on novel pharmacological targets for treatment of diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration, glaucoma and dry eye. • New ocular drug delivery systems.

Book Therapies for Retinal Degeneration

Download or read book Therapies for Retinal Degeneration written by Enrique J de la Rosa and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sight loss and blindness is a very prevalent cause of disability. Retinal diseases leading to visual loss affect many people worldwide and the search for adequate drugs remains a challenge and an important area of interest in the drug discovery field. This book addresses approaches to the treatment of retinal diseases, targeting common processes and components. Despite their causative origins, which comprise genetic dystrophies, age-related degenerations, as well as pathologies associated with other diseases, a neurodegenerative component appears, sooner or later, in the course of the disease. As is the case for most neurodegenerative diseases, the available treatments are far from satisfactory. The aim of this book is to highlight research and drug development efforts in targeting such common processes as a potential path to provide treatments to the millions of affected people.
