Book Therapeutic Resistance to Anti hormonal Drugs in Breast Cancer

Download or read book Therapeutic Resistance to Anti hormonal Drugs in Breast Cancer written by Stephen Hiscox and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-01-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main causes of failure in the treatment of breast cancer is the intrinsic presence of, or development of, drug resistance by the cancer cells. Recent studies on the mechanisms of cancer drug resistance have yielded important information highlighting both how tumour cells may escape these therapeutic constraints and that drug resistance may further impinge on tumour cell functions that may ultimately promote an adverse cell phenotype. New targets have been identified with potential therapeutic applications in resistant breast cancer leading to the subsequent evaluation of inhibitors of these targets in preclinical studies. Importantly, there is increasing evidence from such studies demonstrating the benefit of novel combination strategies as potential avenues for future drug regimens. Written by experts in the subject area, this book covers the molecular details and functional consequences of endocrine resistance in breast cancer with particular emphasis on the future applications of novel drug combinations that may be utilized to circumvent resistance and improve anti-tumour effects. This book represents a timely publication in the field of breast cancer research, providing current knowledge in the area of drug resistance and will be important reading material for clinicians and researchers alike.

Book Drug Resistance in Cancer Cells

Download or read book Drug Resistance in Cancer Cells written by Kapil Mehta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was estimated that in 2008, 1,437,180 patients would receive a new cancer diagnosisand 565,650individualswould die of cancer (Jemal et al. 2008).Since the vast majority of patients dying of cancer will have had anticancer therapy, both c- ventional chemotherapy and novel targeted therapy, it can be concluded that these patients are dying with drug resistant cancer. The term multidrug resistance is also apt – in that these patients die after having undergone multiple rounds of different and structurally unrelated cancer therapies. However, for some, the concept of m- tidrug resistance is a worn out idea, stemming from disappointment with the drug resistancereversalstrategiesthatwerecarriedoutinthe1990susingpumpinhibitors to block drug resistance mediated by P-glycoprotein, product of the MDR-1 gene. However, if one takes the larger de?nition – multidrug resistance as simultaneous resistance to multiple structurally unrelated anticancer therapies – its existence c- not be denied. The purpose of this book is to explore new concepts related to drug resistance in cancer, including resistance to the new molecularly targeted agents. Perhaps new terminology is needed for resistance that occurs following therapy with the targeted agents: Novel Targeted Agent Resistance (NTR). Alternatively, we can return to the original de?nition of multidrug resistance as simply the res- tance to multipleagents that occurs in the course of normalcancer progression. This resistance is likely to be mediated by many factors.

Book excerpt: Resistance to treatment represents the final common outcome for far too many patients with cancer. Even our most promising new drugs fall victim to drug resistance. Hormones and newer biological therapies, though safe and active, also lose their activity over time. In this volume of Drug Resistance, leading investigators in the field have reviewed the most basic mechanisms of drug resistance, and have proposed ways to modulate resistance. This comprehensive volume should be of value for basic and clinical scientists who wish to delve more deeply into this intriguing problem in the laboratory and devastating problem in the clinic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hormones and Vitamins in Cancer Treatment is intended to serve as a therapeuticial guide for physicians using non-aggressive methods, such as hormonotherapy and vitamin therapy, when treating cancer patients. This book provides the rationale and scientific basis for hormones and vitamins, which play an important role in cancer management, and emphasizes the significance of hormones and vitamins in chemoprevention and chemoprophylaxis of cancer. Topics discussed in this book include the criteria for selecting patients for hormonotherapy and vitamin therapy; the favorable effects and advantages of hormonotherapy and vitamin therapy over (or used as adjuvant therapeutic agents) more aggressive methods, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy or surgery; and hormone-like substances, such as growth factors, interferons, interleukins, and prostoglandins. Also included is the newest information regarding the role of diet in cancer prevention. This book is packed with valuable information for researchers, physicians, and students of endrocrinology and clinical oncology. It is also the only book of its kind that discusses the role of hormones, hormone-like substances, and vitamins in cancer prevention and treatment.
