Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why ‘Managing across diverse cultures in East Asia’? We re-examine in this book the link between culture and management across the region vis a vis the new economic, political and social landscape that has appeared over the last decade. We accordingly present a set of chapters on East Asian cultures, economies, societies and their management across the board, focusing on countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, as well as the Overseas Chinese enclaves of Hong Kong SAR, Macao and Taiwan. The contributors to this edited book are all specialists in their respective fields; they hail from a variety of universities and business schools across the world, located in a wide range of countries in the East and in the West. The chapters, we believe, reflect a balance between the past and present, theory and practice, as well as the general and the particular. 'East Asia could not be more important. Malcolm Warner could not be more insightful. Reading Managing Across Diverse Cultures in East Asia will allow you to gain a profound understanding of the cultural complexity in this dynamic region of the world.' - Nancy J. Adler, McGill University, Montreal 'We all need to understand more about management in East Asia, and to learn from it. Managing Across Diverse Cultures in East Asia has contributions from international experts who provide significant insights into the cultures of the most dynamic region in the world today. This book is a landmark publication.' - John Child, University of Birmingham 'This edited volume, with contributions by significant scholars from around the globe, provides a timely and penetrating review of management issues across East Asia, a region that rivals Europe and North American in economic significance and is still ascending. It is a must read for anyone who is interested in international management.' - Kwok Leung, City University of Hong Kong 'Helping a new generation of readers interested in this important region to make better sense, Managing Across Diverse Cultures in East Asia is destined to become a new classic. I expect this well-researched book to be widely read, cited, and debated in the years to come.' - Mike W Peng, University of Texas at Dallas 'Having had such unexpected disasters as earthquakes, floods and financial crises in recent years, we are increasingly dependent on people-management. Development of human resources, in turn, requires region-specific and organization-specific strategies. The present volume edited by Malcolm Warner points the reader to the secret of success in high-performing economies and firms in East Asia.' - Yoko Sano, Kaetsu University, Tokyo

Book The Daily Drucker

Book excerpt: A powerful new learning tool for the ambitious, self-directed manager, entrepreneur, or business person today, The Daily Drucker distils the essence of management guru Peter F. Drucker's teachings in an easy-to-access, daily calendar format. It presents in organized form: a key statement of Drucker’s, followed by a few lines of comment and explanation, with topics ranging across a great many fields of his work: management, business and the world economy; a changing society; innovation and entrepreneurship; decision-making; the changing workforce and the non-profit and their management. However, the most important part of this book are the blank halves of its pages. They are what the readers will contribute, their actions, decisions and the results of these decisions. There are 366 readings, each addressing a major topic, one for every day of the year. Each reading starts with a topic and a “Drucker Proverb” such as “Know Thy Time”, capturing the essence of the topic. Then there is a teaching taken directly from the works of Peter Drucker. Next comes the action step, where you are asked to “Think on” the teaching and apply it to yourself and your organization.

Book Redesigning Asian Business

Download or read book Redesigning Asian Business written by Frank-Jürgen Richter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-03-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With much of the Asian Miracle destroyed and much of the Western world's awe for Asian ways of management dissipated, organizations there are changing with such speed that most of our knowledge about them is quickly outdated. Richter takes stock of East Asian management practices, as they are perceived so far, and he discusses the strategies that others propose to help Asian management redesign itself for the future—including a long-term agenda for change based on the cultural heritage of Confucianism. He analyzes the cultural underpinnings of Asian management practices, evaluates the influence of the Asian economic crisis on them, and discusses their potential for guiding Asian firms to a sustainable competitive advantage. He then provides examples of how Asian firms shape up their organizations and describes a short-term agenda to fix the weaknesses in Asian management, at least temporarily. Throughout, Richter avoids talk about strategic management as merely a theory: he adopts a broader definition that includes a value system to guide East Asian firms as they re-emerge and redevelop. The result is a challenging, intensely pragmatic analysis for decision-makers at all levels, in all countries and cultures, and it is a new stone in the foundation of academic research and thought. Richter opens with a discussion of the legacy of Confucianism and its impact on Asian management practices. He then proposes three intrinsic characteristics of Asian management: networks, trust, and collectivism. He gives a history of the Asian economic crisis, highlighting the failures of Asia's economic development and the flaws that appeared in its management practices. The third section of the book evaluates management practices that have emerged since then, and how they are perceived so far. Then, in the concluding section, he presents a new perspective on Asian management, short-term goals (fixing current management weaknesses), and long-term goals (incorporating its long abiding strengths). Throughout, Richter draws on the management theory enunciated by Hofstede and includes examples and case studies of recent developments across the region, and he also includes his own theories as well as those of others. Mr. Richter's book will be a welcome addition to the literature on business and the culture of Asia.

Book excerpt: Disparities between the economic development of nations have widened throughout the twentieth century, and they show no sign of closing. In the nineteenth century, the economic potential of developed countries was three times that of the rest of the world. Today the gap is twenty times greater, and the trend is increasing. In this provocative reexamination of theories of accelerated development, or "catching up," Vladislav L. Inozemtsev traces the evolution of thinking about how countries lagging behind can most swiftly move forward, and assesses their prospects for success in this effort. Inozemtsev reviews the experience of the Soviet Union, as well as the recent experience of Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. He finds that those countries that have moved forward most rapidly have successfully adapted new technology to old processes. But even then, they face daunting odds, as they grapple with the need to change their population's ideas and behavior. And in the 1990s, their rates of development have noticeably declined. "Catching Up" assesses prospects for successful application of theories of accelerated development in the global economy. Inozemtsev's pessimistic conclusion is that rapid industrial progress is not achievable in the information society of the twenty-first century. Inozemtsev reaches this conclusion after reviewing theories of accelerated development thinking from the diverse viewpoints of the 1940s and 1950s, to the more intensive ideological polarization of the 1960s. Inozemtsev believes it will be impossible for non-Western nations to "catch up" with the West because of their inability to generate or control information and knowledge.

Book Visualization and Interpretation

Download or read book Visualization and Interpretation written by Johanna Drucker and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of visual epistemology in the digital humanities, with attention to the need for interpretive digital tools within humanities contexts. In the several decades since humanists have taken up computational tools, they have borrowed many techniques from other fields, including visualization methods to create charts, graphs, diagrams, maps, and other graphic displays of information. But are these visualizations actually adequate for the interpretive approach that distinguishes much of the work in the humanities? Information visualization, as practiced today, lacks the interpretive frameworks required for humanities-oriented methodologies. In this book, Johanna Drucker continues her interrogation of visual epistemology in the digital humanities, reorienting the creation of digital tools within humanities contexts. Drucker examines various theoretical understandings of visual images and their relation to knowledge and how the specifics of the graphical are to be engaged directly as a primary means of knowledge production for digital humanities. She draws on work from aesthetics, critical theory, and formal study of graphical systems, addressing them within the specific framework of computational and digital activity as they apply to digital humanities. Finally, she presents a series of standard problems in visualization for the humanities (including time/temporality, space/spatial relations, and data analysis), posing the investigation in terms of innovative graphical systems informed by probabilistic critical hermeneutics. She concludes with a final brief sketch of discovery tools as an additional interface into which modeling can be worked.

Book Drucker on Marketing Lessons from the World s Most Influential Business Thinker

Download or read book Drucker on Marketing Lessons from the World s Most Influential Business Thinker written by William Cohen and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 2012-10-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE ESSENTIAL MARKETING WISDOM OF PETER DRUCKER "Bill Cohen has done us a wonderful service by faithfully combing through Peter Drucker's vast writings and weaving together Peter's thoughts on marketing. This has never been done before." -- Philip Kotler, from the Foreword Considered the single most important thought leader in the world of management, Peter Drucker had an equally significant influence on the discipline of marketing. Although he didn’t approach marketing with the same systematic rigor he reserved for management, Drucker addressed the topic in detail in his wellknown treatises on the roles of profitability and leadership, the importance of innovation, and the need to seize new opportunities. Drucker on Marketing is the first comprehensive look at the marketing wisdom of one of modern history's most influential business thinkers. A former student of Peter Drucker, William Cohen has sifted through Drucker's huge body of work, singled out his most salient ideas on marketing, and constructed them into a framework that not only outlines Drucker's marketing philosophy but provides practical advice on how to achieve marketing goals in today's business setting. The book is organized into five thematic sections: The Ascendancy of Marketing Innovation and Entrepreneurship Drucker's Marketing Strategy New Product and Service Introduction Drucker's Unique Marketing Insights For Drucker, profitability should not be the main focus of a business. The customer should be; the market should be. He didn't consider marketing as one of many tools to generate profits. Rather, he viewed marketing as the driving force of business, a philosophy for defining and capturing the most enriching customer opportunities. Providing unique insight into the mind of one of the twentieth century's greatest thinkers, Drucker on Marketing is an essential read for both marketing professionals and fans of Peter Drucker. Praise for Drucker on Marketing "Bill Cohen's interpretation of Drucker's work has never been needed more than today, when marketing spells the difference between success and failure." -- Frances Hesselbein, President and CEO, The Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute "It is my desire that those in positions of influence, especially executives, professors, and students, take Cohen's advice in this book to heart and help their organizations to help us all." -- Joseph A. Maciariello, Horton Professor of Management, The Drucker School of Management, and coauthor of The Drucker Difference "Drucker on Marketing reflects Bill Cohen's unique ability to understand and communicate Peter Drucker's thoughts and ideas about [marketing] with the added touch of how to implement them in a dynamic and changing world." -- C. William Pollard, Chairman Emeritus, The ServiceMaster Company "Drucker said it best when he said that marketing and innovation are the most important business functions because they generate new customers. So, believe me, anything he said about marketing is worth reading. There's no better thinker." -- Jack Trout, global marketing expert, President, Trout & Partners Ltd., and bestselling coauthor of Positioning "Bill Cohen has synthesized and analyzed and brought to life the single subject that, in many respects, lies at the heart of all of Drucker's writing: how to create a customer. This is a major contribution." -- Rick Wartzman, Executive Director, The Drucker Institute, and columnist for Forbes.com

Book Beyond The Knowledge Trap Developing Asia s Knowledge based Economies

Download or read book Beyond The Knowledge Trap Developing Asia s Knowledge based Economies written by Thomas Menkhoff and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the success of the World Scientific publication “Governing and Managing Knowledge” edited by Thomas Menkhoff, Hans-Dieter Evers and Chay Yue Wah in 2005, this unique volume presents 16 new theoretical-practical papers on the strategic aspects of developing knowledge-based economies with case studies from South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines and Uzbekistan. A key question which the book seeks to answer is what Asian policy-makers and leaders in government, economy and society can do to further enhance learning and capability formation so as to foster sustainable development in an increasingly globalized world. It addresses the politico-cultural and socio-economic challenges of effectively managing both knowledge resources and coping with the great digital divide created by globalization, continuous technology innovations and rapid external change. A key objective of the publication is to enable latecomers in the knowledge race to understand some of the critical success factors of sustainable knowledge-based development and what it takes to build a resilient knowledge-based economy.

Book Behind the Open Door

Download or read book Behind the Open Door written by Daniel H. Rosen and published by Peterson Institute. This book was released on 1999 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study describes the experiences of foreign-invested firms in the mainland Chinese economy and discusses the implications of those experiences for the foreign commercial policies of the industrial countries, including the United States. It draws on extensive interviews with expatriate managers and other professionals currently at work in China. Whereas recent books on Chinese marketplace conditions focus on a single firm or issue or lack a discussion of policy conclusions (because they are prepared for a commercial audience), this study is distinguished by the breadth of industry interviews and its concern for policy implications. Rosen makes a rare attempt to deduce the policy implications of current experiences of foreign firms in China, presenting conclusions that go beyond those found in today's usual policy debate. Behind the Open Door is a must for China specialists and should be read by anyone with general or business interests in China or the Asia-Pacific region. The book is an ideal text for MBA programs that focus on the region, and for political science and Asian studies courses on China.
