Book excerpt: An NYPD detective travels to Ireland to investigate his own family’s past in this “smart, textured, immensely readable” mystery (The Washington Post Book World). Neil Hockaday’s father died in World War II before his son could ever know him, and now the police detective is visiting Ireland to meet his last living relative and try to fill in the blanks of his family history. But while he’s on vacation, death isn’t taking a holiday. The apparent suicides of a retired priest and two cops—and an Irish woman’s death in a bombing—combine to keep Hock busy on both sides of the Atlantic in this rich, riveting police procedural, filled with “lively and literate” dialogue, from an Edgar Award–winning author (The New York Times Book Review). “Unusual and engrossing.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review “Dense and vibrant . . . as charming as an Irish brogue.” —Publishers Weekly “One of the most lively and memorable novels to come out this year.” —Richmond Times-Dispatch

This book was released on 2022-02-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a resource to enable scholars and students in Yeats studies to explore the materials in his library, which, together with his unpublished papers and manuscripts, forms part of the writer’s archive in the National Library. Continuing from the first volume (Reading Notes), Volume II describes copies of books he wrote or edited solely in his name and subsequently revised or marked for other purposes, on occasion aided by his wife and others. This book could not have been written without the generous participation of the Yeats family over many years. Their legacy, now entrusted to the National Library, is robust and endless in potential. This book is about individual cases but also the building of an oeuvre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fans of Louise Penny will love the Emily Kincaid mysteries by Elizabeth Kane Buzzelli! A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2011! “Emily is a detective for our times: She can’t afford health care, but she can make flour out of cattails and work three jobs at once.” —Christian Science Monitor Nothing could have prepared part-time journalist Emily Kincaid for the sight of a brutally slain woman left in an abandoned farmhouse, but when she and brooding Deputy Dolly link the execution-style murder to a rash of dead dogs being left on the doorsteps of migrant farm workers, she knows a new form of darkness has descended on her quiet northern Michigan town. Unsure whether the events are acts of retribution, warnings to silence potential witnesses, or omens of even more sinister deeds to come, Emily discovers an alarming string of clues in a book she’s editing for an eccentric Englishman. The flamboyant author hardly seems the type for such gruesome acts, but the eerie plot seems too similar to be coincidental, and too ghastly to ignore. When another macabre murder takes a life at the Englishman’s own home, an investigation already laced with fear becomes downright terrifying. Drawing on the strength of a friendship that’s been tested to the limits, Emily and Dolly will have to put all their squabbles aside to protect each other and catch a killer, because life can be cruel, but fiction can be fatal. Rave reviews for the Emily Kincaid Mysteries: Dead Dancing Women “Every woman who’s ever struggled with saying no, fitting in, and balancing independence against loneliness will adore first-timer Emily.” —Kirkus Reviews Dead Floating Lovers “A mystery that keeps you guessing, together with the story of a woman slowly finding her voice” —Kirkus Reviews Dead Sleeping Shaman “Buzzelli’s well-crafted third Emily Kincaid . . . [features] sharp prose and spirited characterizations.” —Publishers Weekly Praise for A Most Curious Murder: “Fans of [Lewis] Carroll will delight in Zoe’s flights of fancy, and the northern Michigan setting in all its splendor is a charmer . . . an entertaining series with a quirky premise and captivating characters.” —Library Journal “This quirky, clever cozy series launch . . . [is] hard to resist.” —Publishers Weekly “Quirky main characters, lyrical dialogue and a story sure to appeal to bookworms as well as cozy mystery fans are all elements that give this novel a distinctive voice. A clever mystery and intriguing supporting cast round out the mix.” —RT Book Reviews (four star review)

Book Parnell s Funeral and Other Poems from A Full Moon in March

Download or read book Parnell s Funeral and Other Poems from A Full Moon in March written by William Butler Yeats and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manuscripts transcribed and reproduced in this volume of the Cornell Yeats were written from spring 1933 through December 1934. "Parnell's Funeral and Other Poems" is the third section of W. B. Yeats's book A Full Moon in March (1935), following the two plays A Full Moon in March and The King of the Great Clock Tower. David R. Clark's introduction relates biographical events to what the manuscripts show about the chronological order in which the poems were written. The poems, which illuminate such facets of Yeats's life as the poet's flirtations with fascism and Hinduism and his concern, at age sixty-eight, that his poetic powers were waning, are presented in the order in which they appeared in A Full Moon in March. Of the twenty-one poems here, eighteen are called songs. Only "Parnell's Funeral" itself is un-songlike, a somber and powerful declaration made by a Parnellite. Each poem is accompanied by comments on its content and its manuscripts. Ninety-nine illustrations show Yeats's handwritten drafts, typescripts, and revisions. Because of the poems' exotic references, a long section of the introduction provides relevant material from Yeats's letters and commentary and an independent analysis of each poem. Early in his career Yeats, with his fellow poets in the Rymers' Club, had "taken delight in poetry that was, before all else, speech or song, and could hold the attention of a fitting audience like a good play or a good conversation." Throughout "Parnell's Funeral and Other Poems," Yeats's desire for a direct lyrical urge is evident.

Book Forty Rooms

    Book Details:
  • Author : Olga Grushin
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2016-02-16

  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Forty Rooms written by Olga Grushin and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internationally acclaimed author of The Dream Life of Sukhanov now returns to gift us with Forty Rooms, which outshines even that prizewinning novel. Totally original in conception and magnificently executed, Forty Rooms is mysterious, withholding, and ultimately emotionally devastating. Olga Grushin is dealing with issues of women’s identity, of women’s choices, that no modern novel has explored so deeply. “Forty rooms” is a conceit: it proposes that a modern woman will inhabit forty rooms in her lifetime. They form her biography, from childhood to death. For our protagonist, the much-loved child of a late marriage, the first rooms she is aware of as she nears the age of five are those that make up her family’s Moscow apartment. We follow this child as she reaches adolescence, leaves home to study in America, and slowly discovers sexual happiness and love. But her hunger for adventure and her longing to be a great poet conspire to kill the affair. She seems to have made her choice. But one day she runs into a college classmate. He is sure of his path through life, and he is protective of her. (He is also a great cook.) They drift into an affair and marriage. What follows are the decades of births and deaths, the celebrations, material accumulations, and home comforts—until one day, her children grown and gone, her husband absent, she finds herself alone except for the ghosts of her youth, who have come back to haunt and even taunt her. Compelling and complex, Forty Rooms is also profoundly affecting, its ending shattering but true. We know that Mrs. Caldwell (for that is the only name by which we know her) has died. Was it a life well lived? Quite likely. Was it a life complete? Does such a life ever really exist? Life is, after all, full of trade-offs and choices. Who is to say her path was not well taken? It is this ambiguity that is at the heart of this provocative novel.
