Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Barron McIntosh has devoted a lifetime of scholarship to the history of human activity on Nebraska’s Sand Hills, the spare, beautiful land that occupies much of western Nebraska. From carefully deciphering Native American occupancy through rigorous analysis of thousands of arrowheads, to patiently combing through decades of courthouse land title transaction records, McIntosh has mastered the sweep of centuries of human interaction with the land. We learn how the land shapes humankind, far more than pride would have us believe, and we see that perhaps our real success lies in learning how to live with the land, rather than attempting to master it. The Nebraska Sand Hills reflects McIntosh’s lifetime of learning, reading, questioning, analyzing—in short, everything it means to be a scholar; seldom are these efforts so well demonstrated. His affection for this unique landscape is present on every page.

Book Meteorological Drought

Book Surface and Groundwater Quality Changes in Periods of Water Scarcity

Download or read book Surface and Groundwater Quality Changes in Periods of Water Scarcity written by Miloš Gregor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with the evaluation of surface and groundwater quality changes in the periods of water scarcity in river catchment areas. The work can be divided into six parts. Existing methods of drought assessment are discussed in the first part, followed by the brief description of the software package HydroOffice, designed by the author. The software is dedicated to analysis of hydrological data (separation of baseflow, parameters of hydrological drought estimation, recession curves analysis, time series analysis). The capabilities of the software are currently used by scientist from more than 30 countries around the world. The third section is devoted to a comprehensive regional assessment of hydrological drought on Slovak rivers, followed by evaluation of the occurrence, course and character of drought in precipitation, discharges, base flow, groundwater head and spring yields in the pilot area of the Nitra River basin. The fifth part is focused on the assessment of changes in surface and groundwater quality during the drought periods within the pilot area. Finally, the results are summarized and interpreted, and rounded off with an outlook to future research.

Book Drought and Drought Mitigation in Europe

Download or read book Drought and Drought Mitigation in Europe written by Jürgen V. Vogt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drought is one of the major natural hazards, resulting in significant economic, social, and environmental costs. In Europe, water shortage is an important problem in many regions. However, despite the increasing awareness of this hazard, there is no European drought policy and institutional frameworks to cope with drought situations are only weakly developed. This book is dedicated to furthering our understanding of the drought problem in Europe and to discussing policy and management options to mitigate its impacts. It covers aspects from the detection of water stress to the planning of mitigation strategies. The contributions are written by recognised experts in their field and represent a unique collection of papers on the topic. Audience: The book will be of benefit to scientists, managers, and politicians involved in problems related to water management, risk assessment, and spatial planning. Students in Earth Sciences, especially in geography, climatology, hydrology, and agriculture, will find useful material in this collection of papers.
