Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the midst of the Blizzard of 1978, the tanker Global Hope floundered on the shoals in Salem Sound off the Massachusetts coast. The Coast Guard heard the Mayday calls and immediately dispatched a patrol boat. Within an hour, the Coast Guard boat was in as much trouble as the tanker, having lost its radar, depth finder, and engine power in horrendous seas. Pilot boat Captain Frank Quirk was monitoring the Coast Guard's efforts by radio, and when he heard that the patrol boat was in jeopardy, he decided to act. Gathering his crew of four, he readied his forty-nine-foot steel boat, the Can Do, and entered the maelstrom of the blizzard. Using dozens of interview and audiotapes that recorded every word exchanged between Quirk and the Coast Guard, Tougias has written a devastating, true account of bravery and death at sea, in Ten Hours Until Dawn.

Book Courage Defiance Stories of Spies Saboteurs and Survivors in World War II Denmark Scholastic Focus

Download or read book Courage Defiance Stories of Spies Saboteurs and Survivors in World War II Denmark Scholastic Focus written by Deborah Hopkinson and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critically acclaimed Sibert Honor author Deborah Hopkinson brings to bold life the remarkable story of the Danish resistance and rescue of over 7,000 Jews during WWII. When the Nazis invaded Denmark the morning of Tuesday, April 9, 1940, the people of this tiny country to the north of Germany awoke to a devastating surprise. The government of Denmark surrendered quietly, and the Danes were ordered to go about their daily lives as if nothing had changed. But everything had changed. Award-winning author Deborah Hopkinson traces the stories of the heroic young men and women who would not stand by as their country was occupied. Rather, they fought back. Some were spies, passing tactical information to the British; some were saboteurs, who aimed to hamper and impede Nazi operations in Denmark; and 95% of the Jewish population of Denmark were survivors, rescued by their fellow countrymen, who had the courage and conscience that drove them to act. With her extraordinary talent for digging deep in her research and weaving real voices into her narratives, Hopkinson reveals the thrilling truth behind one of WWII's most daring resistance movements.

Book Kasba White Partridge A Story of Hudson Bay

Download or read book Kasba White Partridge A Story of Hudson Bay written by George Raymond Ray and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a bright, bitter-cold day in the short days of winter. The sun shone forlornly upon the bleak, ice-bound shores of Hudson Bay, as if in despair at its utter inability to warm the intensely cold atmosphere, or change in the slightest degree the frozen face of nature. Limitless fields of dazzling Whiteness stretched to the horizon on either hand; a tremendous expanse of turbulent ice-fields, of hills and ridges, of plains and dells; a great white world, apparently empty. Over all was the silence of death; a silence of awful profundity, yet at the same time an indescribably beautiful revelation. Near at hand a trapped Arctic fox lay dishevelled and bleeding, its little green eyes glittering evilly and watching with some apprehension the movements of an object which had sprung up, apparently from nowhere, to advance upon it with startling directness. The object was Roy Thursby, an intrepid young officer of the Hudson’s Bay Company, visiting his “line” of traps; a big fellow of five-and-twenty, with muscles of iron; a clean-shaven face—a noble face that betrayed a high-minded nature; eyes that as a rule were hard, but could soften; and a heart that never quailed. He was dressed in moleskin trousers, a pair of long blue stroud leggings, a coat made of hairy-deerskin (that is to say, deerskin dressed on the one side only), with a hood edged with fur, a l’Assumption belt that encircled his waist, and large deerskin moccasins, under which he undoubtedly wore at least two pairs of hairy-deerskin socks. Mittens of dressed deerskin were suspended from his shoulders by a worsted cord, and a fur cap with earpieces completed his costume. He wore snowshoes and carried a hunting-bag across his back and a rifle over his shoulder.

Book An Alabama Story

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Hammarberg
  • Publisher : Daniel Hammarberg
  • Release : 2012-12-05
  • ISBN : 1480297518
  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book An Alabama Story written by Daniel Hammarberg and published by Daniel Hammarberg. This book was released on 2012-12-05 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Alabama Story is based on the accounts a southern man living in Alabama related to the author - he will here be referred to as Billy Bob. When Hammarberg came across Billy Bob, he was able to share in captivating tales of Billy Bob's family life and how he and his family (here called the Hix) had interacted with their surrounding community. When Billy Bob let the author share in his tales, he made the author swear that he wouldn't let anyone else hear about them. Yet the author decided that these tales were simply too remarkable for the world to be denied them. Hence this book was written, a compilation of the tales Billy Bob had told the author about a year in the life of the Hix family. Hopefully Billy Bob will forgive Hammarberg for breaking his vow and publishing the book. Billy Bob insisted that even though many of his tales simply required the suspension of disbelief, every single one of them were absolutely true. But since the author doesn't want to jeopardize his good name by categorizing this work as non-fiction, in the case that some of them turn out not true, it sorts under Young-Adult Fiction. Inside the covers of this book, the reader will be treated to anecdotes like these from the Hix family life: The time the Hix burglarized a mansion as a family and brought home a hundred grand's worth of loot The time Billy Bob and one of his sons chased all the blacks out of the Birmingham welfare office How Billy Bob managed to prevent his lesbian daughter from marrying a 50-year-old woman The story of when Billy Bob ran for mayor of Birmingham How two of the family members became local heroes in the pro-wrestling circus During this year, the family ran into a number of celebrities as well, and these encounters are retold in full detail. Hopefully reading the book will bring many hours of enjoyment, and perhaps even spark a debate about freedom of speech. Speaking of free speech - prior to the publication of this novel, certain well-known voices in American public life demanded that their commentary on the book would be included with its distribution. The author had no problems with including them, and their messages are listed below: "Once again the white devil has put his racist sentiments on display for all of us to see. Peaceful activists such as myself are doing the best we can to let our nation heal the wounds it's suffered under white supremacist rule, then this book comes along and ruins it all!" /A. Sharpton "This book will singlehandedly set us back at least 50 years in the struggle for women's liberation. Not a single woman in this book has a career or works for a living; and even worse, the family's lesbian daughter is constantly bullied throughout the whole book!" /J. Fonda "This is an outrage! In spite of a lifetime spent fighting for civil rights, I'm being scoffed and ridiculed in the pages of this book! Us blacks need to picket the Capitol over this!" /J. Jackson "I fear that after this book has been widely circulated, even more young queers than today will make that tragic step into the great beyond by taking their own lives, tormented by homophobia. Before you buy this book, think of the children!" /D. Savage "I feel that the language and the narrative elements of this book are very racially divisive and that they're entirely inappropriate for 21st-century America. I'm especially appalled at the disrespectful references to me as a person and I urge you not to buy the book!" /B.H. Obama For more information, go to alabamastory.com.

Book Red Cavalry and Other Stories

Download or read book Red Cavalry and Other Stories written by Isaac Babel and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2005-07-07 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his life Isaac Babel was torn by opposing forces, by the desire both to remain faithful to his Jewish roots and yet to be free of them. This duality of vision infuses his work with a powerful energy from the earliest tales including 'Old Shloyme' and 'Childhood', which affirm his Russian-Jewish childhood, to the relatively non-Jewish world of his collection of stories entitled 'Red Cavalry'. Babel's masterpiece, 'Red Cavalry' is the most dramatic expression of his dualism and in his simultaneous acceptance and rejection of his heritage heralds the great American-Jewish writers from Henry Roth to Saul Bellow and Philip Roth.

Book The Fascinating Story of Muhammad

Download or read book The Fascinating Story of Muhammad written by Ahmad Shameem and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ali Sina, a great expert of Islam, wrote about this book: This is a great book. I read the first thirty pages and I could not stop. This book must be translated in all languages and become available to all Narrating the story in the gripping way of a good novel, it tells about Muhammad, his believer and unbeliever tribal relatives, the Qur'an, and the Arabian society of the period as truthfully and originally as the oldest Arab records make it possible. It does not fail to shock and surprise when one finds that during his twenty-three years of apostolate, Muhammad arranged for banditry raids, secret assassinations, ransom taking, kidnappings, slave trading, ethnic cleansing, inter-tribal wars, and murderous expeditions. Of these raids, the number of well recorded and documented, discussed by the Qur'an itself, is thirty-eight. Muhammad personally took part in twenty-seven raids and battles in nine of which he was directly engaged in killing. These were the battles of Badr, Uhud, Ahzaab, Hunayn, and Ta'if, the massacres of the Qurayza and the Khyber Jews, the surprise raid on the Mustalaq, and the occupation of Mecca. History tells us that many kings started as bandits and came to rule vast territories. If Muhammad had claimed that he was a king, one could place him amongst the greatest of kings but the surprise lies in his claim that he was God's most favourite and final prophet. If prophets were to kill and plunder, sell slaves, hold captives for ransom, allow rape of slave women, and develop systems of extortion, how does one differentiate between a Godly man and a king?
