Book The Early Laps of Stock Car Racing

Download or read book The Early Laps of Stock Car Racing written by Betty Boles Ellison and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-09-22 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first organized, sanctioned American stock car race took place in 1908 on a road course around Briarcliff, New York--staged by one of America's early speed mavens, William K. Vanderbilt, Jr. A veteran of the early Ormond-Daytona Beach speed trials, Vanderbilt brought the Grand Prize races to Savannah, Georgia, the same year. What began as a rich man's sport eventually became the working man's sport, finding a home in the South with the infusion of moonshiners and their souped-up cars. Based in large part on statements of drivers, car owners and others garnered from archived newspaper articles, this history details the development of stock car racing into a megasport, chronicling each season through 1974. It examines the National Association for Stock Car Automobile Racing's 1948 incorporation documents and how they differ from the agreements adopted at NASCAR's organization meeting two months earlier. The meeting's participants soon realized that their sport was actually owned by William H.G. "Bill" France, and its consequential growth turned his family into billionaires. The book traces the transition from dirt to asphalt to superspeedways, the painfully slow advance of safety measures and the shadowy economics of the sport.

Book Higher Vibrations for Health Happiness and Harmony

Download or read book Higher Vibrations for Health Happiness and Harmony written by Brian Withers and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher Vibrations for Health, Happiness, and Harmony shows you why your life is the way it is, the good, the bad, and the ugly, and how to take back your power so you can take charge of what happens in your life. What we must realize is that much of our influences in our growing years were unaware of some critical pieces of knowledge about who we are as a complete human being and the power we possess to direct and navigate our life. In the absence of these missing pieces of knowledge, we as a human race have taken on many faulty and limited beliefs about ourselves, and about the way life is to be lived. This has profoundly affected the quality of our life. The missing pieces of knowledge not only connect us with our true power as a human being, but they connect us with the fundamental laws that govern everything in the universe, and empower us to co-create the life of our desires. Without this knowledge, not only is it virtually impossible for any of us to live a complete life of balance and fulfillment, but collectively, we cannot achieve world harmony and peace because we are operating with faulty and limited beliefs. In this book you will find the truth of your power and the natural laws, and how to use those to not only live the life you came to this planet for, but to strongly influence world peace and harmony without lifting a finger. You have that much power within you; you simply need to learn how to use it intentionally.

Exploring issues of housing, spirituality, personal care and death, Cheryl Kuba has created a testament to the dependent elderly. This book draws on numerous interviews with aging people and discusses common caregiver mistakes and interpretations, what a caregiver should expect when an aging parent moves in, and how to care for an aging parent from afar. Kuba also delves into such phenomena as guilt, role reversal, changing family dynamics, financial stress, and caring for oneself while caring for another. The 22.4 million elderly people being cared for in the United States comprises the fastest growing segment of the population, making this reference on the opinions and concerns of care receivers invaluable.

"The Great Gatsby of my time...one of the best books by a member of my generation." —Kurt Vonnegut, acclaimed author of Slaughterhouse-Five Perhaps Frank and April Wheeler married too young and started a family too early. Maybe Frank's job is dull. And April never saw herself as a housewife. Yet they have always lived on the assumption that greatness is only just around the corner. But now that certainty is about to unravel. With heartbreaking compassion and remorseless clarity, Richard Yates shows how Frank and April mortgage their spiritual birthright, betraying not only each other, but their best selves. In his introduction to this edition, novelist Richard Ford pays homage to the lasting influence and enduring power of Revolutionary Road.

Book Democracy and the New Religious Pluralism

Download or read book Democracy and the New Religious Pluralism written by Thomas Banchoff and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious pluralism is everywhere in today's politics. Increased immigration flows, the collapse of communism, and the globalization of communications technologies have all fostered a wider variety of religious beliefs, practices, and organizations within and across democratic societies. This is true in both the United States and Europe, where growing and diverse minority communities are transforming the political landscape. As a result, controversies over such things as headscarves and depictions of Mohammed are unsettling a largely secular Europe, while a Christian majority in the US faces familiar questions about church-state relations amidst unprecedented religious diversity. Far from receding into the background, religious language pervades arguments around established issues such as abortion and capital punishment, and new ones such as stem cell research and same-sex marriage. In Democracy and the New Religious Pluralism, leading scholars from multiple disciplines explore these dynamics and their implications for democratic theory and practice. What are the contours of this new religious pluralism? What are its implications for the theory and practice of democracy? Does increasing religious pluralism erode the cultural and social foundations of democracy? To what extent do different religious communities embrace similar -- or at least compatible -- ethical and political commitments? By seeking answers to these questions and revealing religious pluralism as both a source of animosity and a potent force for peaceful engagement, this book offers a revealing look at the future of religion in democratic societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to empower YOU to take the wheel of life and become an assertive driver by learning how to transform adversity into high-grade fuel on YOUR journey toward success. Drive Yourself Successful: 11 Inner States to Personal Empowerment offers you a driver’s view of what keeps your gear shift stuck in park on the road of life. Author Rachel Lynn illustrates what keeps you from setting goals and accelerating toward them and challenges you to realize that you hold the key to your own life experiences. Following the analogy of driving your car, Rachel helps you identify items stored in your trunk that weigh you down emotionally and keep you from moving forward. She supplies you with crucial tools to carry with you in case you break down or run out of gas; demonstrates how thoughts serve as your life GPS; assists you in developing a clear vision for the future—steering you away from focusing on what is in the rear-view mirror; educates you on how to regain your spark, embrace detours and prevent them from turning into roadblocks, and when to stay in your own lane by setting personal boundaries and not comparing yourself to others. Make a wrong turn? Rachel challenges you to recognize when it is time to change gears and go in a different direction while helping you develop an internal sense of self-confidence and motivation to get behind the wheel. This book draws from others’ real life experiences to challenge you to closely examine what lies underneath the hood of your car in regard to your thinking and personal beliefs and how you can redirect your thoughts to accelerate toward the life you desire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It takes a great mind to study a great mind. The literary critic John Livingston Lowes puts his reputation on the line by chosing to analyse the sources, thoughts and imagination of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The result, 'The Road to Xanadu', is a remarkable and insightful examination of the creative processes and reading material that inspired 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' and 'Kubla Khan'. Lowes brilliantly uses his study of Coleridge as a springboard to a more wide-ranging analysis of the imagination. If you like Coleridge's work, you will be fascinated by this look into the mind of a literary giant. John Livingston Lowes (1867-1945) was an American scholar and critic of English literature. His best-known subjects were Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Geoffrey Chaucer, author of 'The Canterbury Tales'. His most famous work is 'The Road to Xanadu: A Study in the Ways of the Imagination', which examines the sources of Coleridge's 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' and 'Kubla Khan'.
