Book The Grand Food Bargain

Download or read book The Grand Food Bargain written by Kevin D. Walker and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to food, Americans seem to have a pretty great deal. Our grocery stores are overflowing with countless varieties of convenient products. But like most bargains that are too good to be true, the modern food system relies on an illusion. It depends on endless abundance, but the planet has its limits. So too does a healthcare system that must absorb rising rates of diabetes and obesity. So too do the workers who must labor harder and faster for less pay. Through beautifully-told stories from around the world, Kevin Walker reveals the unintended consequences of our myopic focus on quantity over quality. A trip to a Costa Rica plantation shows how the Cavendish banana became the most common fruit in the world and also one of the most vulnerable to disease. Walker’s early career in agribusiness taught him how pressure to sell more and more fertilizer obscured what that growth did to waterways. His family farm illustrates how an unquestioning belief in “free markets” undercut opportunity in his hometown. By the end of the journey, we not only understand how the drive to produce ever more food became hardwired into the American psyche, but why shifting our mindset is essential. It starts, Walker argues, with remembering that what we eat affects the wider world. If each of us decides that bigger isn’t always better, we can renegotiate the grand food bargain, one individual decision at a time.

Book excerpt: MY "ITINERARY" COMMENTS 12/03/2018, 11:05 AM "EMPHASIS", "UNDERLINES", "SPELLING", "DIALOGUES", "PARAGRAPH BREAKS" & "DEITY PRONOUNS": I agree with Page's suggestions on all of these. "ATA" (About the Author): Short description of myself, "to use at the end of the book". J.C. Roberton graduated from Yale with a BA in Politics & Economics, spent the following four years as an infantry officer in the Marines, then returned to school and picked up a law degree from Stanford and an MBA from UC-Berkeley. After practicing corporate law for several years in California, he converted a "brief" overseas business trip into six years managing a major hospital complex in Abu Dhabi. He subsequently participated in several start-up ventures and real-estate sales, and eventually devoted two years to writing this book. BACK COVER SUMMARY (to add to my title) (also used for my press release): My Audience: This is for somebody who wants not just to read, but to learn. Anyone who participates in a free-market economy can benefit from these lessons. My wide audience consists of all who engage in bargaining over price (i.e., almost everyone). My narrower audience consists of inexperienced individuals who don't know much about how to play the bargaining game, but want to learn. This latter group consists of (a) young executives & entrepreneurs in the early stages of their careers, and (b) consumers who feel they're paying too much for goods and services. My approach aims to level the playing field. My Mantra: Bargaining can be taught. Bargaining can be learned. Bargainers Are Made, Not Born. GENRE / CATEGORY: (In my order of preference): BUS025000, Entrepreneurship. BUS027020, Financial Risk Management. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR EDITORS: I'd like to insert some cartoon-type illustrations (perhaps 6-8 or so) at key places within the text. I don't yet have any such illustrations and I will discuss this with my PC. I will identify just where in the text I would like to insert these. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE ON MY FINISHED COVER DESIGN: I'm thinking of a catchy cartoon illustration on the front cover, along with the title and author. However, I'd like to discuss this with my PC, and also the Copy Editor and/or Page Designer. PREFERRED RETAILPRICE: I note that Page's most recent publications (per Page's website) are all listed at $9.99 apiece on Amazon. That sounds fine with me, unless somebody has some compelling reasons to the contrary. 12/03/18, at 11:51 Page 1 of 1 C:\Users\Jim\Desktop\ZPRS-CRNT\3.01 Page Publishing\1.02 My Itinerary Comments.docx

Book The Hard Bargain

Download or read book The Hard Bargain written by David Tucker and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hard Bargain describes in vivid detail and elegant prose the clash of wills between a famous father and his hard-driving middle son. Richard Tucker, the American superstar tenor from the golden age of the Metropolitan Opera, demanded that his son become a surgeon. Rejecting his father’s wishes, David wanted to follow his father onto the opera stage. Their struggle over David’s future—by turns hilarious and humiliating, wise and loving—is played out in medical and musical venues around the world. The father and son strike a bargain, the hard bargain of the title, which permitted both dreams to flicker for a decade until one (the right one, it turns out) bursts into sustaining flame. This heartfelt memoir about a son’s struggle against the looming power of a magnetic father is conveyed in a moving narrative that one reviewer has called “the most dramatic exploration of the private life of a legendary singer in the annals of opera literature.”

Book Bargain Fever

Download or read book Bargain Fever written by Mark Ellwood and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost half of everything sold in America is listed at some kind of promotional price. People don't only want a deep discount, they expect it - and won't settle for anything less. In this playful, deeply researched book, journalist Mark Ellwood takes a trip into this new landscape. From the floor of upscale department store Sergdorf Goodman to the bustling aisles of a Turkish bazaar, from the outlet Disneyworld of rural Pennsylvania to a town in Florida that can claim to be couponing's spiritual capital, Ellwood shows how some people are, quite literally, born to be bargain junkies thanks to a quirk of their DNA. He also uncovers the dark side of discounting: the sales-driven sleights of hand that sellers employ to hoodwink unsuspecting buyers. Bargain Feveris a manual for thriving in this new era, when deal hunting has gone from being a sign of indigence to one of intelligence. There's never been a better time to be a buyer - at least if you know how the game works. 'This book is a bargain hunter's bible.' Michael Tonello, author of Bringing Home the Birkin'Bargain Fever is just as fierce, funny, tenacious, and tantalizing as its author. I love this book.' Kelly Cutrone, founder, People's Revolution, and author of Normal Gets You Nowhere'A book after my own heart. Book Hard Bargains

  • Author : Mona Lynch
  • Publisher : Russell Sage Foundation
  • Release : 2016-11-01
  • ISBN : 1610448618
  • Pages : 206 pages

Download or read book Hard Bargains written by Mona Lynch and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The convergence of tough-on-crime politics, stiffer sentencing laws, and jurisdictional expansion in the 1970s and 1980s increased the powers of federal prosecutors in unprecedented ways. In Hard Bargains, social psychologist Mona Lynch investigates the increased power of these prosecutors in our age of mass incarceration. Lynch documents how prosecutors use punitive federal drug laws to coerce guilty pleas and obtain long prison sentences for defendants—particularly those who are African American— and exposes deep injustices in the federal courts. As a result of the War on Drugs, the number of drug cases prosecuted each year in federal courts has increased fivefold since 1980. Lynch goes behind the scenes in three federal court districts and finds that federal prosecutors have considerable discretion in adjudicating these cases. Federal drug laws are wielded differently in each district, but with such force to overwhelm defendants’ ability to assert their rights. For drug defendants with prior convictions, the stakes are even higher since prosecutors can file charges that incur lengthy prison sentences—including life in prison without parole. Through extensive field research, Lynch finds that prosecutors frequently use the threat of extremely severe sentences to compel defendants to plead guilty rather than go to trial and risk much harsher punishment. Lynch also shows that the highly discretionary ways in which federal prosecutors work with law enforcement have led to significant racial disparities in federal courts. For instance, most federal charges for crack cocaine offenses are brought against African Americans even though whites are more likely to use crack. In addition, Latinos are increasingly entering the federal system as a result of aggressive immigration crackdowns that also target illicit drugs. Hard Bargains provides an incisive and revealing look at how legal reforms over the last five decades have shifted excessive authority to federal prosecutors, resulting in the erosion of defendants’ rights and extreme sentences for those convicted. Lynch proposes a broad overhaul of the federal criminal justice system to restore the balance of power and retreat from the punitive indulgences of the War on Drugs.

Book New York Cab Driver and His Fare

Download or read book New York Cab Driver and His Fare written by Charles Vidich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using information derived from research and interviews with cab drivers, Vidich has written a basic work on New York City cab drivers (hacks) that also provides passengers (fares) with a survival manual. Cab drivers are quoted by newspaper columnists, politicians, and at dinner parties; yet a hard look at the profession and its role in the transportation system of the city has been completely lacking. Vidich brings out in clear language the conflicts between the cab driver's position as a dispenser of a public service and his needs as a working person subjected to violence and pressure. It is difficult to imagine a more enjoyable introduction to an industry whose members are a folk tradition. At the same time, this book provides insight into the history and sociology of an important urban institution. It is a book about cab drivers everywhere; and cab drivers and fares in all cities have a new handbook in this volume.
