Book The Emerging Dairy Economy in China

Download or read book The Emerging Dairy Economy in China written by Zhang-Yue Zhou and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently per capita consumption of dairy products in China is low. In view of China's strong economic growth and the resulting higher consumer income, whether this would represent a great market potential for dairy products has drawn much interest from the dairy industry both within and outside China. This paper overviews China's dairy market with up-to-date information and highlights important factors affecting its development. The study shows that the growth of demand for dairy products in China is promising. However, despite the fact that China's accession to the WTO will result in reductions in trade barriers, a substantial increase in exports of dairy products to the Chinese market is unlikely in the near future. This is due to a number of reasons including taste differences between the Chinese and the consumers of those major dairy exporters. Increased understanding of the Chinese dairy markets and increased attention to modifying their products to suit the tastes of the Chinese are essential for dairy exporters to succeed in the Chinese market.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do the Chinese, who are mostly lactase non-persistent, suddenly thirst for milk today? Whether it is formula milk, fresh cow milk, or tea with condensed milk, the rocketing milk consumption and production in China are of increasing global food safety, health, and environmental concerns. Milk Craze examines and compares developments in China's dairy industry and dietary dairy consumption, cross-nationally and globally, and more specifically in two localities: Shunde and Hong Kong. Through an innovative analysis of medical texts and social media, as well as careful ethnographic studies, Veronica Mak ponders why the surge in demand for Western cow milk coincides with the plunge in sales of indigenous water-buffalo milk and cheese. She reveals the multiple ways in which global industries and Chinese dairy conglomerates sabotage and destroy local dairy farms. She shows that the rise of milk consumption is not just about the globalization of cow milk production and Westernization of the Chinese diet, but also due to the crossovers between the traditional Chinese diet and medicine and modern global diets. She uses these reference points to explore the multiple meanings of dairy foods in China, such as the class and cultural attributes associated with British “milk tea” and flavored yogurt products, water buffalo curds and cheese, and the lower class associations of labor in the water-buffalo dairying industries, and then discusses these developments in China through colonial and modern global perspectives. Milk Craze argues powerfully that the Westernization or dramatic change of diet in China too often obscures structural, educational, occupational, and social stresses and constraints, while naturalizing the dubious redefinition of health, cognitive performance, and ideal body shape as individual responsibility and imperative.

Book The Chinese Dairy Sector

Download or read book The Chinese Dairy Sector written by Huiyuan Zou and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rising values of Chinese dairy imports in recent years generated studies exploring the market potentials for future importing. These studies typically treat the country and its population as uniform and undifferentiated, with homogeneous consumption and production patterns, ignoring the fact that demographic and geographic features are very different across China. At the same time, China's milk production is expanding rapidly, and unevenly in the last 20 years. The supply of milk, a highly perishable commodity, makes the geographic location of production and spatial price differences important factors in defining the availability of milk to populations across the country. The scenarios of inter-regional trade of milk powder and other storable dairy products across China are emerging. This paper is devoted to building an inter-regional dairy trade model for China, and predicting its dynamic internal dairy trade flow under free trade scenario. This paper updates and summarizes dairy product consumption and supply trends in China, and divides China in four regions. Panel data is used to check consumer and producer responses in different regions, and, at the same time, serve as a test for the hypothesis that China's dairy consumption preference and production patterns are different across the country. Partial equilibrium is the framework used to build the inter-regional dairy trade model. Our results show that in the major milk producing of Northwestern China producers will suffer most and local consumers may not benefit that much. Eastern China, the richest area, is not benefiting as much from free trade since its high income consumers are not that price sensitive. This region will continue to be the largest importer among the four regions. Inland China and Western China are less price sensitive in production but more price responsive in consumption. With price reduction under free trade, these regions gain more and a free trade policy will stimulate the imports in these two regions.

Book Farmer Participation the Dairy Industry and the Rise of Dairy Production in China

Download or read book Farmer Participation the Dairy Industry and the Rise of Dairy Production in China written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With rapid income growth, dairy production and consumption in China have increased significantly. This emergence of the dairy sector will provide opportunities for farmers to participate in a high-value, potentially more lucrative enterprise. The overall goal of this paper is to analyze the major determinants of farmers' participation in dairy production. Our main question is whether or not the pace of the emergence of the dairy processing industry has affected the ability of farmers to participate in dairy production and whether or not it has limited the expansion of their herd size. Based on household, village and processor surveys conducted in the Greater Beijing region, our analysis shows that the location of dairy processing firms is one of the key factors that determines the participation of farmers in dairy production. Although other factors affect participation and herd size -- for example, access to roads and the ability to get a job off the farm (which affects the opportunity cost of household members) -- access to dairy processors is shown to be the major factor that has encouraged the growth of dairy production over the past decade. The results also show that poor, less educated farmers with relatively less access to land are not excluded from the rapid expansion of the Greater Beijing dairy market.

Book Environmental Change and Food Security in China

Download or read book Environmental Change and Food Security in China written by Jenifer Huang McBeath and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-25 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract This chapter defines food security as the condition reached when a nation’s population has access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet its dietary needs and food preferences. It stresses China’s importance to global food security because of its population size. The chapter introduces the contents of the volume and then treats briefly food security in ancient and dynastic (211 bc–1912) China. It examines environmental stressors, such as population growth, natural disasters, and insect pests as well as imperial responses (for example, irrigation, flood control, storage and transportation systems). The chapter also briefly int- duces the Republican era (1912–1949) and compares environmental stressors and government responses then to those of the imperial period. Keywords Food system • Food security • Food production regions • Environmental stressors (Population growth • Natural disasters • Insect pests and Plant diseases • Deforestation • Climate change) • Irrigation systems • Flood control • Grand Canal 1. 1 The Problem of Food Security and Environmental Change Food is the material basis to human survival, and in each nation-state, providing a system for the development, production, and distribution of food and its security is a primary national objective. Many forces have influenced the food security of peoples since ancient times, with particular challenges from natural disasters (floods, famines, drought, and pestilence) and growing populations globally.

Book Towards Agricultural Change

Download or read book Towards Agricultural Change written by Pierre Jacquet, Rajendra K Pachauri, Laurence Tubiana and published by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Planet for Life 2012 focuses on agriculture and its relation to development, food and the environment. At the end of the 2000s, a consensus has emerged and points to the urgent need for massive investment in the agricultural sector, which is (once again) viewed as one of the prime engines for development and food security, as well as for poverty reduction. But what exactly does this consensus cover? While the idea of investing in agriculture is gaining ground and although several countries or regions appear to be offering opportunities for investment in agricultural land, debates are going on as to which agricultural models to choose and how agricultural policies should be implemented.A Planet for Life called on many highly specialized authors from different countries and perspectives, and invites the reader to discover the sector in all its complexity, upstream and downstream of agricultural production. At the crossroads of the challenges posed by development, food security and the environment, the transformation of the agricultural sector is at the heart of the global stakes of sustainable development. To help steer these changes towards greater sustainability, this book makes us aware of how crucial it is to also change our representations of agriculture, change the visions that guide projects for change and the policies regulating this sector.

Book An Analysis of the Impact of Trade Liberalization on China s Dairy Market a Spatial Equilibrium Model

Download or read book An Analysis of the Impact of Trade Liberalization on China s Dairy Market a Spatial Equilibrium Model written by M. He and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In China, the dairy market has expanded in recent years and it relies heavily on the imports from foreign countries. During the past decades, the Chinese dairy market kept opening, and the fast development of China’s dairy trade calls for a research analyzing the effect of trade liberalization on the dairy sector. In this research, we provide a quantitative assessment of the implications of liberalization of the international trade in dairy products between China and its trading partners using a spatial equilibrium model. The model is developed based on 2011 data from open databases. The following five questions are answered in this paper: (1) What is the current situation of China’s dairy sector and how does China’s dairy market develop? (2) What policies are relevant for dairy trade between China and its trade partners now and in the future? (3) How can dairy trade of China be modeled? (4) What data on demand, supply and trade are necessary and available to construct a spatial equilibrium model? (5) What are the effects of trade liberalization on the dairy sector in China? Three scenarios of different levels of trade liberalization are simulated and the simulation result proves the positive influence of trade liberalization on Chinese dairy sector from a welfare perspective. Based on the results, we come up with some policy recommendations. Throughout the thesis, chapter 1 provides a general description of the background and problem analysis. Chapter 2 describes the development of China’s dairy sector and relevant trade policies. A trade model has been developed in Chapter 3. Next, Chapter 4 focuses on the effects of trade liberalization using a graphical analysis. Chapter 5 details the scenarios and simulation results. Finally, Chapter 6 presents the conclusions, recommendations and discussion.
