Book Age related Differences in Driver Behavior Associated with Automated Vehicles and the Transfer of Control Between Automated and Manual Control

Download or read book Age related Differences in Driver Behavior Associated with Automated Vehicles and the Transfer of Control Between Automated and Manual Control written by Lisa J. Molnar and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall objective of this exploratory research was to examine specific human factors issues associated with transfer of control between automated and manual driving to characterize age-related differences in behaviors and reactions to this transition. Seventy-two participants were recruited from three age groups (young novice drivers age 16-19, older drivers age 65-75, and comparison drivers age 25-45). Participants were presented with simulated driving environments containing manual and automated driving modes with multiple transition scenarios. Objective driving data were collected on take-over related measures and visual gaze behaviors. Following the drive, participants completed the NASA TLX questionnaire, a structured interview to explore perceptions related to the drive, and a questionnaire to gather background information and to explore the use of various technologies. When analyzing performance in the driving simulator in terms of take-over related measures and visual gaze behaviors, it appeared that the young driver group markedly different, whereas the older driver group was closer in behaviors to the comparison group. There were also age differences found in the structured interview, questionnaire, and NASA TLX. This project extended research on automated vehicle technologies to encompass the social and behavioral aspects of the transfer of control between automated and manual control, and helps provide a foundation knowledge for age-specific issues related to automated vehicles.

Book Synthesis of Human Factors Research on Older Drivers and Highway Safety Volume I Older Driver Research Synthesis

Download or read book Synthesis of Human Factors Research on Older Drivers and Highway Safety Volume I Older Driver Research Synthesis written by L. K. Staplin and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall goals in this project were to perform literature reviews and syntheses, using meta-analytic techniques, where appropriate, for a broad and comprehensive body of research findings on older driver needs and (diminished) capabilities, and a more focused body of work concerning human factors and highway safety, to support the development of specific research products. The research products completed through these activities included: (1) an applications-oriented Older Driver Highway Design Handbook intended to supplement standard design manuals for practitioners; (2) an Older Driver Research Synthesis, oriented toward human factors professionals and researchers; (3) a Human Factors and Highway Safety Synthesis capturing major findings and trends in studies of driver use of (and difficulties with) a wide range of highway elements; (4) future research program recommendations that are focused on specified applications and are consistent with the needs identified through other work in this project; and (5) the shell of a relational data base (RIDHER) structured to encompass the information elements in these research syntheses.

Book Driver Performance

Download or read book Driver Performance written by and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1993 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 13 papers in the volume focus on driver performance and simulation. Human engineering of advanced technology to aid drivers is discussed first: topics include the design of auditory interfaces new to the world of automobiles and the design of vehicle controls and models of human performance to use in evaluating the development of high technology for drivers. Then human behavior in the driving environment is explored in studies of eye scanning and driver work load. Ways to improve information to the driver are examined from the perspective of the vehicle, through the use of daytime running lights, and from sources external to the vehicle, such as broadcasting, signs, and markings. The Record concludes with papers on simulation of vehicle dynamics and motion.

Book Comparison of Older and Younger Driver Responses to Emergency Driving Events Final Report

Download or read book Comparison of Older and Younger Driver Responses to Emergency Driving Events Final Report written by E. Kloeppel and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the responses of older, middle-aged, and younger drivers during performance of emergency maneuvers in an interactive driving simulator. Thirty-six drivers, equally distributed among three age groups (20-29; 35-44; 65-74) participated in the 32.2-km (20-mi) simulated drive, during which they encountered four emergency events at two levels of difficulty. Data were also collected in two baseline segments where no emergency events occurred. The emergency events were situations where other vehicles performed unexpected maneuvers: pulling out in front of the subject's car from a side street, and turning left in front of the subject's car at an intersection. Information on driver performance variables, including avoidance behavior and emergency avoidance response time, was collected. None of the age groups differed in avoidance response time, speed, deviation from the speed limit, brake pedal force, or avoidance behavior. Age differences were found in lateral placement at intersections. Older drivers drove further to the right of the lane center than younger and middle-aged drivers. It is believed that this finding is a result of a higher level of defensive behavior among older drivers. No other differences in driving behavior were found between groups. In this experiment, subjects were not performing turning maneuvers. Future research should be directed, when possible, toward investigating driver behavior when making turning maneuvers across traffic.
