Book Optimization Theory and Applications

Download or read book Optimization Theory and Applications written by L. Cesari and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has grown out of lectures and courses in calculus of variations and optimization taught for many years at the University of Michigan to graduate students at various stages of their careers, and always to a mixed audience of students in mathematics and engineering. It attempts to present a balanced view of the subject, giving some emphasis to its connections with the classical theory and to a number of those problems of economics and engineering which have motivated so many of the present developments, as well as presenting aspects of the current theory, particularly value theory and existence theorems. However, the presentation ofthe theory is connected to and accompanied by many concrete problems of optimization, classical and modern, some more technical and some less so, some discussed in detail and some only sketched or proposed as exercises. No single part of the subject (such as the existence theorems, or the more traditional approach based on necessary conditions and on sufficient conditions, or the more recent one based on value function theory) can give a sufficient representation of the whole subject. This holds particularly for the existence theorems, some of which have been conceived to apply to certain large classes of problems of optimization. For all these reasons it is essential to present many examples (Chapters 3 and 6) before the existence theorems (Chapters 9 and 11-16), and to investigate these examples by means of the usual necessary conditions, sufficient conditions, and value function theory.

Download or read book Stability Theory of Dynamical Systems written by N.P. Bhatia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-01-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reprint of classic reference work. Over 400 books have been published in the series Classics in Mathematics, many remain standard references for their subject. All books in this series are reissued in a new, inexpensive softcover edition to make them easily accessible to younger generations of students and researchers. "... The book has many good points: clear organization, historical notes and references at the end of every chapter, and an excellent bibliography. The text is well-written, at a level appropriate for the intended audience, and it represents a very good introduction to the basic theory of dynamical systems."

Book Treatise on Classical Elasticity

Download or read book Treatise on Classical Elasticity written by Petre P. Teodorescu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 805 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deformable solids have a particularly complex character; mathematical modeling is not always simple and often leads to inextricable difficulties of computation. One of the simplest mathematical models and, at the same time, the most used model, is that of the elastic body – especially the linear one. But, notwithstanding its simplicity, even this model of a real body may lead to great difficulties of computation. The practical importance of a work about the theory of elasticity, which is also an introduction to the mechanics of deformable solids, consists of the use of scientific methods of computation in a domain in which simplified methods are still used. This treatise takes into account the consideration made above, with special attention to the theoretical study of the state of strain and stress of a deformable solid. The book draws on the known specialized literature, as well as the original results of the author and his 50+ years experience as Professor of Mechanics and Elasticity at the University of Bucharest. The construction of mathematical models is made by treating geometry and kinematics of deformation, mechanics of stresses and constitutive laws. Elastic, plastic and viscous properties are thus put in evidence and the corresponding theories are developed. Space problems are treated and various particular cases are taken into consideration. New solutions for boundary value problems of finite and infinite domains are given and a general theory of concentrated loads is built. Anisotropic and non-homogeneous bodies are studied as well. Cosserat type bodies are also modeled. The connection with thermal and viscous phenomena will be considered too. Audience: researchers in applied mathematics, mechanical and civil engineering.

Book Introduction to the Theory and Application of Differential Equations with Deviating Arguments

Download or read book Introduction to the Theory and Application of Differential Equations with Deviating Arguments written by L.E. El'sgol'ts and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1973-11-02 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to the Theory and Application of Differential Equations with Deviating Arguments 2nd edition is a revised and substantially expanded edition of the well-known book of L. E. El’sgol’ts published under this same title by Nauka in 1964. Extensions of the theory of differential equations with deviating argument as well as the stimuli of developments within various fields of science and technology contribute to the need for a new edition. This theory in recent years has attracted the attention of vast numbers of researchers, interested both in the theory and its applications. The development of the foundations of the theory of differential equations with a deviating argument is still far from complete. This situation, of course, leaves its mark on our suggestions to the reader of the book and prevents as orderly and systematic a presentation as is usual for mathematical literature. However, it is hoped that in spite of these deficiencies the book will prove useful as a first acquaintanceship with the theory of differential equations with a deviating argument.

Book Mathematical Models in Molecular Cellular Biology

Download or read book Mathematical Models in Molecular Cellular Biology written by Lee A. Segel and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1980 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in theoretical biology is rapidly growing and this 1981 book attempts to make the theory more accessible to experimentalists. Its primary purpose is to demonstrate to experimental molecular and cellular biologists the possible usefulness of mathematical models. Biologists with a basic command of calculus should be able to learn from the book what assumptions are implied by various types of equations, to understand in broad outline a number of major theoretical concepts, and to be aware of some of the difficulties connected with analytical and numerical solutions of mathematical problems. Thus they should be able to appreciate the significance of theoretical papers in their fields and to communicate usefully with theoreticians in the course of their work.
