Book excerpt: Y ou could say man into wolf and wolf into man got blasted into existence. You could also say the Tasmanian Aborigines and the Tasmanian Wolf got blasted out of existence. It’s called extinction and it lasts forever and, when Ihe the wolfman did the sums of early Tasmania, it all added up. This was except for one thing… the existence of the truly last Thylacine Wolf hiding out somewhere life-giving and life-preserving from the ever-hunters and the always-killers. This made it all the more urgent for Ihe to find the great beast first, in order to brace up its unique animal-kind courage before they tracked it down. They are always tracking it down. But Ihe was Man and also Wolf, as one, and he was on the scent too… that for every eye done to extinction was a human hunter’s eye and for every done-in eye tooth was a human hunter’s tooth. And for flesh, what better than human flesh? But first, there was his famous arch-enemy to hunt down and run from, both. It was bad enough when he planted his foot in the wrong place and the Army’s report about it concluding: ‘In any hairy situations, this will undoubtedly change how he gets a lot of looks’. But what would the Army know about the trauma that transmogrifies? It’s always been nits or nothing with him, anyhow. It’s just that Ihe the wolfman didn’t want to end up like the presumed last Tasmanian Wolf hanging from a rafter. That great shame.

Download or read book The Force of Character written by James Hillman and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2012-11-07 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his bestselling The Soul's Code, James Hillman restored passion and meaning to the concept of identity, arguing that each of us is born with an innate character, the "daimon" or "spirit" that calls us to what we are meant to be. Now, in The Force of Character, Hillman brings the idea of character full circle, offering a revolutionary new vision of life's most feared and misunderstood chapter: old age. "Aging is no accident," Hillman writes. "It is necessary to the human condition, intended by the soul." We become more characteristic of who we are simply by lasting into later years; the older we become, the more our true natures emerge. Thus the final years have a very important purpose: the fulfillment and confirmation of one's character. Contrary to the current genetic determinism that sees increased longevity as a wasted aberrance created by civilization, The Force of Character presents an explosive new thesis: The changes of old age, even the debilitating ones, have purposes and values organized by the psyche. Memory for recent events may falter, offering more place for long-term recollections. A heart condition in later life brings an opportunity to remove blockages from constricted relationships, while changes in sleep patterns allow the old to experience the profound elements of nighttime that we usually overlook. As Hillman says, "Aging makes metaphors of biology." In this empowering and original work, James Hillman resurrects the ancient, widespread, and socially effective idea of the old person as "ancestor," a model for the young, the bearer of a society's cultural memory and traditions. America disregards old people who aren't young-acting and young-looking. We don't realize that "oldness" is an archetypal state of being that can add value and luster to things we treasure, places we revere, and people's character. When we open our imaginations to the idea of the ancestor, aging can free us from convention and transform us into a force of nature, releasing our deepest beliefs for the benefit of society. For all who read it, The Force of Character will be a seminal, life-affirming experience.

Book excerpt: An occult historian’s journey of discovery continues in the second volume of this renowned literary fantasy series by “a deliciously elegant writer” (Kirkus). In The Solitudes, John Crowley introduced readers to Pierce Moffett, a scholar whose area of expertise lies beyond the realm of our daily reality: a land of the imagination known as Ægypt. Retreating to the quiet of upstate New York, Moffett discovers the works of Fellows Kraft, an uncanny source of hermetic revelations. Now, in Love & Sleep, Moffett begins to understand the true importance—and power—of his studies. His search for a secret history of the world has brought him to the threshold of a new era . . . one in which magic works and angels speak to humankind. John Crowley’s Ægypt Cycle is widely regarded as a masterpiece of fantasy literature. Harold Bloom included both The Solitudes and Love & Sleep in his Western Canon.

Download or read book A Complicated Marriage written by Janice Van Horne and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2013-05-14 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1955, Jenny Van Horne was a 21-year-old, naive Bennington College graduate on her own for the first time in New York City when she met 46–year–old Clement Greenberg who, she is told, is "the most famous, the most important, art critic in the world" and soon finds herself swept into his world and the heady company of Hans Hofmann, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, David Smith, Helen Frankenthaler, among others. Seven months later, as a new bride, Jenny and Clem spend the summer in East Hampton near Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner, and she feels even more keenly like an interloper in the inner circle of the art scene. A woman disowned by her anti–Semitic family for marrying a Jew, she would develop a deep, loving bond with Clem that would remain strong through years of an open marriage and separate residences. Jenny embodies the pivotal changes of each passing decade as she searches for worlds of her own. She moves from the tradition of wife and mother to rebellion and experimentation; diving into psychoanalysis; the theater world of OOB and the Actors' Studio; and succeeding in business. Throughout, A Complicated Marriage is grounded in honesty and the self–deprecating humor, grace, and appealing voice of its author.
Download or read book Jesus the Crown of Our Free Will written by Michael Hanna and published by Australian Self Publishing Group. This book was released on 2016 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choices and destiny go hand in hand, and for the sake of our survival, we make so many choices in our lives. However, many a time, our minds, some how, come to a stand still in the midst of a crowded and blurred world, re'ecting even for a few minutes on a question seems to be closely related to an eternal notion.Yet it's a strange and unfamiliar question, because of its close af'liation with a choice that may take us to a place beyond the Grave. No matter how often we trying to brush aside any thought or rid of any concern about our destiny, everyone, sooner is the better, has to draw the red line, and take the ? nal decision of what is our reaction would be when our ?nal will at last gaze at death face to face!Nevertheless, the time has come to search into this reality and make my own choice as well, and that is to write about the other free will, or rather the most valuable spiritual gift of free will, the one philosopher tend to ignore, and dispose of. Since such writings are not possible to be all inclusive in humble limited pages, I have tried, instead, to focus and bring together the Christian one, the most relevant one.I thank You gracious Lord, for You have bestowed on such mere souls the wonderful gift of righteous rebellion.
