Book English Irish Scottish Silver at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute

Download or read book English Irish Scottish Silver at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute written by Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute and published by Hudson Hills. This book was released on 1997 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this stunning catalog, Wees, curator of decorative arts at the Clark Art Institute, shares her extensive knowledge of silver. Robert Sterling Clark, who established the Art Institute in 1955, preferred Huguenot silver? especially that of Paul de Lamerie? so his collection, which contains typical objects from the early 16th to the mid-20th centuries, is especially rich in 18th-century examples. Wees arranges this collection according to general function ("Dining," "Lighting," etc.) and prefaces each chapter with exhaustively footnoted essays. She accompanies each item with crisp black-and-white photographs, a wealth of description, and helpful commentary. Analogous to Kathryn Buhler's standard catalog of American silver in Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, this is a wonderful tool for researching makers and hallmarks, comparing stylistic elements, or just marveling at the beauty of an extraordinary collection. While not intended to be a historical compendium, this informative, visual feast belongs in all silver reference collections and will also certainly appeal to individual collectors. 19 colour & 1,222 b/w illustrations

Book Patterns in the Production of Paestan Red Figure Pottery

Download or read book Patterns in the Production of Paestan Red Figure Pottery written by Edward Herring and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the previous scholarship on Paestan red-figure pottery has focused on the cataloguing of collections, the attribution of vases to painters and workshops, iconographic and stylistic matters, and individual vessels and vase forms. This partly reflects the history of vase-painting scholarship, which grew out of antiquarian collecting during 18th and 19th centuries, and partly the fact that a full archaeological provenance is not preserved for the majority of vessels. This book uses a database containing in excess of 1,800 vessels and fragments to identify patterns in the production and decoration of Paestan vases that cast light on the choices made by vase-producers and the preferences of their customers. It considers the popularity of different vessel shapes over time, the use of highly generic decorative scenes, which are characteristic of Paestan red-figure, as well as the popularity of scenes of myth, images of the gods, and scenes of nude and half-draped women. Paestan red-figure is compared with the vessels decorated in Applied Red produced at the same site. A comparison is also made between the output of the Paestan red-figure industry and that of Apulia. As the majority of the vases in the sample derive from tombs, the patterns identified provide insights into the ways in which the ancient populations of Paestum and South-West Italy commemorated the dead.

Book excerpt: "The last great work of the age of reason, the final instance when all human knowledge could be presented with a single point of view ... Unabashed optimism, and unabashed racism, pervades many entries in the 11th, and provide its defining characteristics ... Despite its occasional ugliness, the reputation of the 11th persists today because of the staggering depth of knowledge contained with its volumes. It is especially strong in its biographical entries. These delve deeply into the history of men and women prominent in their eras who have since been largely forgotten - except by the historians, scholars"-- The Guardian, https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2012/apr/10/encyclopedia-britannica-11th-edition.

Book Exploring Human Behavior Through Isotope Analysis

Download or read book Exploring Human Behavior Through Isotope Analysis written by Melanie M. Beasley and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-23 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume compiles a series of chapters written by experts of isotopic analysis in order to highlight the utility of various isotope systems in the reconstruction of past human behaviors. Rather than grouping contributions by specific isotopes or analytical techniques, as many isotope review articles are arranged, the volume organizes chapters by broadly defined themes of archaeological research. These include: paleodiet and life histories, human-animal interactions, and migration and mobility. In this sense, the book is arranged with the intent of being as much question based as method based. Chapters under these themes provide background information on the principles of the techniques and on the theoretical underpinnings of the research; yet they are written with the non-specialist in mind and attempt to convey these ideas clearly and succinctly. In addition to the case studies and reviews, three chapters provide greater context to the field of isotopic archaeology, discussing its history, basic principles, and future potential. The volume aims to serve as a reference source for students and practicing archaeologists seeking to apply isotopic studies to their own research projects or to act as a reader for courses in archaeological science. Chapter 6 is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.
