Book Drilling Operations Cost and Risk Management

Download or read book Drilling Operations Cost and Risk Management written by Prosper Aideyan and published by . This book was released on 2015-05-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every activity or operation in well construction has its own associated risk(s). The cost of running the operation will most certainly be impacted by the level of risk that can be taken for that particular operation. Typically, the running of an operation costs less if the level of risk associated with it is high, and it is higher if the level of risk is lower. However, any safety incidents arising out of high-risk operations could potentially lead to catastrophic damage, which in-turn may raise the overall cost of running the operation immensely. Therefore it is important to identify all risks associated with any operation during well construction and to determine what level of risk is acceptable and to what extent. Risk management is the economics of finding a suitable balance between running an operation by rejecting and accepting various risks; developing barriers for acceptable risks and making a profit while running a safe operation.

Book Dynamic Safety Analysis of Managed Pressure Drilling Operations

Download or read book Dynamic Safety Analysis of Managed Pressure Drilling Operations written by Majeed Olasunkanmi Abimbola and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exploration and development of oil and gas reserves located in harsh offshore environments are characterized with high risk. Some of these reserves would be uneconomical if produced using conventional drilling technology due to increased drilling problems and prolonged non-productive time. Seeking new ways to reduce drilling cost and minimize risks has led to the development of Managed Pressure Drilling techniques. Managed pressure drilling methods address the drawbacks of conventional overbalanced and underbalanced drilling techniques. As managed pressure drilling techniques are evolving, there are many unanswered questions related to safety and operating pressure regimes. Quantitative risk assessment techniques are often used to answer these questions. Quantitative risk assessment is conducted for the various stages of drilling operations - drilling ahead, tripping operation, casing and cementing. A diagnostic model for analyzing the rotating control device, the main component of managed pressure drilling techniques, is also studied. The logic concept of Noisy-OR is explored to capture the unique relationship between casing and cementing operations in leading to well integrity failure as well as its usage to model the critical components of constant bottom-hole pressure drilling technique of managed pressure drilling during tripping operation. Relevant safety functions and inherent safety principles are utilized to improve well integrity operations. Loss function modelling approach to enable dynamic consequence analysis is adopted to study blowout risk for real-time decision making. The aggregation of the blowout loss categories, comprising: production, asset, human health, environmental response and reputation losses leads to risk estimation using dynamically determined probability of occurrence. Lastly, various sub-models developed for the stages/sub-operations of drilling operations and the consequence modelling approach are integrated for a holistic risk analysis of drilling operations.

Book Macondo Well Deepwater Horizon Blowout

Download or read book Macondo Well Deepwater Horizon Blowout written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-03-02 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The blowout of the Macondo well on April 20, 2010, led to enormous consequences for the individuals involved in the drilling operations, and for their families. Eleven workers on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig lost their lives and 16 others were seriously injured. There were also enormous consequences for the companies involved in the drilling operations, to the Gulf of Mexico environment, and to the economy of the region and beyond. The flow continued for nearly 3 months before the well could be completely killed, during which time, nearly 5 million barrels of oil spilled into the gulf. Macondo Well-Deepwater Horizon Blowout examines the causes of the blowout and provides a series of recommendations, for both the oil and gas industry and government regulators, intended to reduce the likelihood and impact of any future losses of well control during offshore drilling. According to this report, companies involved in offshore drilling should take a "system safety" approach to anticipating and managing possible dangers at every level of operation-from ensuring the integrity of wells to designing blowout preventers that function under all foreseeable conditions-in order to reduce the risk of another accident as catastrophic as the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill. In addition, an enhanced regulatory approach should combine strong industry safety goals with mandatory oversight at critical points during drilling operations. Macondo Well-Deepwater Horizon Blowout discusses ultimate responsibility and accountability for well integrity and safety of offshore equipment, formal system safety education and training of personnel engaged in offshore drilling, and guidelines that should be established so that well designs incorporate protection against the various credible risks associated with the drilling and abandonment process. This book will be of interest to professionals in the oil and gas industry, government decision makers, environmental advocacy groups, and others who seek an understanding of the processes involved in order to ensure safety in undertakings of this nature.

Book Operation Management of Drilling Processes in Surface Mining

Download or read book Operation Management of Drilling Processes in Surface Mining written by Omer Ugurlu and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In recent years, the profit margin for mining companies has been declining due to low commodity prices and high operating costs associated with resource degradation and system aging, forcing mining companies to reduce operating costs in order to maintain operations. Cost savings presented by new technologies and computational resources that allow companies to modernize mining equipment are offset by increasing equipment complexity, which can lead to higher operating costs. The drilling operation is one component that can be the focus of cost reduction efforts because it affects all phases of mineral production--from exploration to extraction and mineral processing. Therefore, an efficient drilling operation can help to achieve the desired economic production cycle, but it must be optimized to balance operating performance (measured by the rate of penetration or ROP) with longer drill bit life. The ROP depends on various controllable (i.e., rotation speed, weight on the bit, and bailing air pressure) and uncontrollable (i.e., physical and mechanical properties of the rock formation, bit type, bit material, operator expertise, and drilling machine condition) parameters. The ROP and controllable parameters are directly related: when the controllable parameters increase, ROP also increases and operating costs decrease consequently. However, high controllable parameters shorten bit life and enhance bit consumption through wear. Thus, there is a trade-off between bit consumption and operating cost. The relationship between ROP and the bit life must be optimized to minimize the total cost of the operation for mine management. Identifying an optimum set of operational parameters helps to ensure the minimum cost per drill bit, which represents a considerable portion of the total operating cost of the machine. Hence, it is crucial to estimate the optimum bit replacement time while considering ROP. Another important factor that directly affects drilling performance and the cost is the condition of the drilling equipment, which is getting larger due to economies of scale. Unexpected failures severely affect the production schedule; thus, equipment reliability is required for satisfactory performance. Statistical tools and simulation techniques are the best methods to determine bit replacement time, whereas reliability and maintenance analysis are the best tools to ensure operational performance. These tools help to forecast future failure of repairable and non-repairable system components, prevent unexpected stoppages, and improve the quality of the maintenance. This thesis focuses on 1) optimizing drilling operation parameters using design of experiment tolls, cost minimization with evolutionary algorithms, machine performance assessment, and risk quantification using reliability analysis and stochastic modeling techniques (Markov Chain Monte Carlo and Mean Reverting); 2) determining optimum replacement time of drill bits based on historical data using discrete event simulation and minimizing replacement costs by using an evolutionary algorithm and Monte-Carlo Simulation.
