Book Our Fighting Governor

Download or read book Our Fighting Governor written by Janet Schmelzer and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the apex of progressive reform in Texas from 1907 to 1911, Thomas M. Campbell served as the state’s chief executive. Closely associated with former Texas Governor James Stephen Hogg, Campbell played a central role in reviving the Hogg reform movement and building a strong record of progressive laws in areas such as social welfare, public education, and tax reform. In the broader context of southern progressivism, Campbell was a leading progressive governor much like Hoke Smith of Georgia, Benjamin Comer of Alabama, Charles B. Aycock of North Carolina, and Andrew Jackson Montague of Virginia. This full biography of Campbell’s life and political career shines a light on his contributions and successes as well as his failures and shortcomings. In Our Fighting Governor, Janet Schmelzer explores Campbell’s life, political career, and legacy. At the same time, she provides new insight into the inner workings of the Texas Democratic Party at the turn of the twentieth century. She uncovers Campbell’s political philosophy and the importance of his leadership that guided the agenda for progressive reform, resulted in the passage of reform legislation, and marked him as a southern progressive governor.

Book Bareknuckle

Download or read book Bareknuckle written by Bartley Gorman and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2011-08-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As bareknuckle fighting is poised to steal MMA’s spotlight, its greatest modern-day champion tells his story of rising to the top in the brutal sport. Steeped in the tradition of his Irish Traveller ancestry, Bartley Gorman also embraced its dangerous subculture: bareknuckle fighting. Though it gave birth to boxing as we know it today, the sport has remained underground—and illegal in most developed countries. But that didn’t stop Gorman from rising through the prize-fighting ranks of Great Britain and Ireland and staying undefeated for twenty years. Now, through Gorman’s thrilling memoir, readers get a front row view of the punches exchanged in back parking lots and fair grounds, the gritty characters populating the fight circles, and the hazards facing a sought after champion. “A rare glimpse into a secret world,” Bareknuckle celebrates one man’s mastery of fighting in its purest form and heralds the rebirth of one of the oldest combat sports in history (The Independent on Sunday). “Every page shines. A tremendous book.” —Traveller Magazine “Well-written and interesting.” —Boxing News

Perseverance in the face of overwhelming adversity. These are just some of the qualities of the members of the U.S. Special Operation Forces. BEYOND HELL AND BACK details the seven defining Special Ops missions that have made the Special Operation Forces the best fighting unit in the world, including: *THE RESCUE OF BAT-21: The largest and longest Combat Search and Rescue mission in the Vietnam War lasted 17 days and cost the lives of 13 Americans—all to rescue one man and the invaluable knowledge he alone possessed. * TASK FORCE NORMANDY: Planned in secrecy and executed with flawless efficiency, Task Force Normandy was an Army/Air Force Special Operations joint op that fired the opening shots behind enemy lines in Operation Desert Storm. *OPERATION EAGLE CLAW: The devastating Special Forces operation mounted to retrieve 52 American hostages in Iran resulted in the deaths of eight members of the rescue team. This failure ultimately led to the creation of Special Operations Command. *BASHER 52: Captain Scott O'Grady was shot down over the "no fly" zone above Bosnia, and his daring rescue was one of the Marine Corps' finest operations ever. These are a few of the dramatic true tales that represent the defining moments that helped shape the operational methods, planning, and deployment for all future Special Ops missions. BEYOND HELL AND BACK is the greatest collection of Spec Ops missions ever assembled.

Download or read book Fighting Fire 1 The Intern Sexy New Adult Romance written by Emily Stone and published by Emily Stone. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claire Reynolds has had to fight for everything that she has achieved in her life. An erratic foster-care upbringing has left her determined to put in the hard work necessary to achieve her dreams and build a solid future. Armed with her MBA and a five-year plan she has landed a prestigious internship with Bellingham Developments. If she excels, she will surely be offered a permanent job and a chance to make her mark in the industry she loves. Enter Andrew Bellingham, heir to the Bellingham empire. Drew is most definitely not a part of any five-year plan. His playboy reputation is often the talk of the town; but Claire is surprised to find that Drew is completely the opposite of the gossip that surrounds him. Charming and intelligent, not to mention devastatingly handsome, Drew is a man who gets what he wants. And despite his father's dismay, what he wants is Claire... SNEAK PEEK! “I’m going to leave you two to it,” Nora said, “but might I suggest actually speaking directly with the man?” Her eyes sparkled with humor. “I should go with you,” I insisted. I felt like it was rude to let her leave alone. “Take some time to sort him out and I’ll see you on Monday. Good job this week, Claire. I couldn’t have asked for a better intern." I seriously had the coolest boss ever, but I heard the veiled warning in her words of advice. I needed to make the drama go away so we could focus on work. “Flavor of the month?” Drew frowned as he took Nora’s vacant seat beside me. “I’m flattered...” Honesty, that's what Nora had recommended. “But?” “How is this hard?” I blurted much to his amusement. “You’re adorable when you’re mad.” He chuckled. “Drew! Please try to understand...I, I come from nothing,” I stammered. “I grew up in foster care and I’ve had to claw my way here. Failure is not an option - failure is the difference between having a roof over my head or a spot on the street. This internship is everything, and I cannot risk the possibility that this could turn into a real job, on a silly flirtation. I understand you want to irritate your father and that showering your attention on a nobody like me is a good way to do that...but it’s too much of a risk for me. Can’t you understand that?” “Two things and then I will leave you to your evening,” he said softly and I could see the anger flashing in his eyes. “First, I had no idea how much this job means to you and I didn’t realize my attention could be such a negative thing. I promise I will not bother you at work. I would hate to think I could jeopardize your future. Second, I am not trying to piss my father off by...what was it? ‘Showering my attention on a nobody like you’. I resent that you would even think of yourself in that light. I find I’m incredibly intrigued by you, Claire. I happen to think you are beautiful, funny, charming, completely refreshing and the more I get to know you the more I like you. I admire your drive and dedication and now that I know something of your background, I think I am in complete awe of you. I won’t interfere with your internship, but I would like to make you aware right now that I absolutely intend to pursue your attention outside of work.” I was completely overwhelmed by his words as well as his anger. Anger that I didn’t see myself the way he saw me. I was still reeling when his lips brushed mine in a tentative kiss that sent my heart racing in my chest. “Good evening Claire,” he whispered as he stood to leave me... free, freebie, new adult, contemporary romance, career, rich boss, new adult with sex

They sought revenge for the 1864 massacre at Sand Creek, when John Chivington and his Colorado volunteers nearly wiped out a village of Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho. The violence in eastern Colorado spread westward to Fort Laramie and Fort Caspar in southeastern and central Wyoming, and then moved north to the lands along the Wyoming-Montana border.

Book Fighting with the Long Range Desert Group

Download or read book Fighting with the Long Range Desert Group written by Brendan O'Carroll and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formed in 1940 the Long Range Desert Group was the first Allied Special Forces unit established to operate behind German and Italian lines in North Africa. Its officers and men were volunteers recruited from British and Commonwealth units. Merlyn Craw was serving with the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force when he joined the LRDG in 1941. He took part in numerous missions in the desert. The navigational driving and fighting skills of the LRDG were legendary and they were frequently responsible for transporting Stirling’s SAS detachments on raids. Merlyn’s luck ran out when he was captured on the Barce raid in September 1942, but he escaped twice, the second time making it back to Allied lines. Sent home on leave, he returned to Italy with the New Zealand Army. After a ‘disagreement’ he went AWOL and rejoined the LRDG with no questions asked, serving until the end of the war. Drawing on interviews with Merlyn and other former LRDG veterans, the author has created a vivid picture of this exceptional and highly decorated fighting man. Readers cannot fail to be impressed by the courage and ruthless determination of Merlyn Craw MM and his comrades.
