Book excerpt: Como resultado del analisis en forma detallada sobre la importancia del problema de drenaje superficial, factores que influyen en su presentacion, consecuencias diversas que origina, asi como su posible solucion; se llega a las siguientes conclusiones. 1.- Durante la epoca lluviosa (julio a enero) en mayor o menor grado dependiendo del tipo de suelo y de la topografia, se presentan en la zona de la Chontalpa problemas de exceso de agua superficial y subsuperficial, en el caso particular del area agricola del pozo Chontalpa 16 el problema de drenaje superficial es grave, ya que la profundidad minima del nivel freatico en los meses criticos de octubre-noviembre es de 2 m, y no perjudican al sistema radicular de los cultivos establecidos. 2.- Las condicionestopograficas del terreno estudiado son desfavorables al libre escurrimiento superficial debido a que las pendientes son minimas, el area es muy plana y ademas el microrelieve es accidentado a causa de las dificultades que presenta el suelo para su laboreo agricola. Por otra parte no hay establecido un sistema de drenaje superficial permanente que permitiera desalojar los excesos de agua. 3.- La fuente de alimentacion de los excesos de agua es la precipitacion que concentra el 88.7% de su valor total anual (1,967.6 mm) en 8 meses del ano; esta gran cantidad de lluvia y las condiciones de suelo y topografia existentes son las causas que originan el problema de drenaje. ...

This research evaluates links between the emergence of centralized leadership and the organization of agricultural production. The focus is on reconstructing the demographic history of 137 km2 based on a full coverage systematic survey, and on reconstructing patterns of food production and consumption based on analysis of pollen, phytoliths and plant macroremains from the excavation of 31 tests at locations representing different environmental settings and settlement types. The study proposes a sequence starting at about 600 B.C., with the first manifestations of a regional system of centralized authority appearing after about 500 A.D. Neither control of basic resources nor specialized craft production seem to have been important in the social and political dynamics of the emerging Quijos chiefdoms.
