Book Post wall German Cinema and National History

Download or read book Post wall German Cinema and National History written by Mary-Elizabeth O'Brien and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2012 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since unification, a radical shift has taken place in Germans' view of their country's immediate past, with 1989 replacing 1945 as the primary caesura. The cold-war division, the failed socialist state, the '68 student movement, and the Red Army Faction -- historical flashpoints involving political oppression, civil disobedience, and the longing for utopian solutions to social injustice -- have come to be seen as decisive moments in a collective history that unites East and West even as it divides them. Telling stories about a shared past, establishing foundational myths, and finding commonalities of experience are pivotal steps in the construction of national identity. Such nation-building is always incomplete, but the cinema provides an important forum in which notions of German history and national identity can be consumed, negotiated, and contested. This book looks at history films made since 1989, exploring how utopianism and political dissent have shaped German identity. It studies the genre - including popular successes, critical successes, and perceived failures - as a set of texts and a discursive network, gauging which conventions and storylines are resilient. At issue is the overriding question: to what extent do these films contribute to a narrative that legitimizes the German nation-state? Mary-Elizabeth O'Brien is Professor of German and The Courtney and Steven Ross Chair in Interdisciplinary Studies at Skidmore College.

Book Leveraging the Potentials of Peer Learning

Download or read book Leveraging the Potentials of Peer Learning written by Sarah Oeste-Reiß and published by kassel university press GmbH. This book was released on 2019-01-23 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The digitization changes qualification demands of knowledge workers and opens new forms of collaboration. Solutions are required for enhancing acquisition and transfer of knowledge as well as training professional skills such as critical thinking, communication and cooperation. Peer Learning (PL) provides potentials for coping with these demands. However, it faces practical challenges as its reusability is low, collaboration expertise is required, and lacks leveraging digitization potentials. In contrast, the body of Collaboration Engineering (CE) literature, provides insights as it is an approach to designing collaborative work practices for high-value recurring tasks and deploying those to practitioners to execute for themselves without collaboration expertise. In this light, three research questions shape the structure of the thesis. First, the thesis shows an analysis of the application domain and develops a teaching-learning approach for creating conditions for PL in large scale lectures. Second, it proposes an approach to designing reference processes for enhancing PL. Third, it presents three studies that illustrate the design, instantiation and evaluation of reference processes for enhancing PL in the field. As methodological approach the thesis uses Design Science and develops, instantiates and evaluates re-usable reference processes for enhancing PL.

Book excerpt: What is there to hope for today? How does hope manifest itself at a time when a linear understanding of the future, of growing prosperity, security, and progress is canceled? How can hope be thought beyond market-driven forms of worldbuilding? Is there a third approach in which hope as a critical practice opens a path to alternative futures? After Techno Globalization Pandemic and Kingdom of the Ill, HOPE is the third chapter of the long-term project TECHNO HUMANITIES, exploring the urgent questions of what it means to be a global citizen in the present-day dependency between ecology, technology, and economy. HOPE brings together a wide range of artistic positions from different generations that see the end of future as the start of new beginnings and an incentive to validate more circular and re-generative practices as a source of wonder and collective movement.

Download or read book Bambule Das Regiebuch written by Ulrike Meinhof and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Buchenwald Child

  • Author : William John Niven
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 9781571133397
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book The Buchenwald Child written by William John Niven and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the notorious Buchenwald concentration camp, communist prisoners organized resistance against the SS and even planned an uprising. They helped rescue a three-year-old Jewish boy, Stefan Jerzy Zweig, from certain death in the gas chambers. After the war, his story became a focus for the German Democratic Republic's celebration of its resistance to the Nazis. Now Bill Niven tells the true story of Stefan Zweig: what actually happened to him in Buchenwald, how he was protected, and at what price. He explores the (mis)representation of Zweig's rescue in East Germany and what this reveals about that country's understanding of its Nazi past. Finally he looks at the telling of the Zweig rescue story since German unification: a story told in the GDR to praise communists has become a story used to condemn them. Bill Niven is Professor of Contemporary German History at the Nottingham Trent University, UK.

Book The Rhetoric of Topics and Forms

Download or read book The Rhetoric of Topics and Forms written by Gianna Zocco and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress “The Many Languages of Comparative Literature” includes articles that study thematic and formal elements of literary texts. Although the question of prioritizing either the level of content or that of form has often provoked controversies, most contributions here treat them as internally connected. While theoretical considerations inform many of the readings, the main interest of most articles can be described as rhetorical (in the widest sense) – given that the ancient discipline of rhetoric did not only include the study of rhetorical figures and tropes such as metaphor, irony, or satire, but also that of topoi, which were originally viewed as the ‘places’ where certain arguments could be found, but later came to represent the arguments or intellectual themes themselves. Another feature shared by most of the articles is the tendency of ‘undeclared thematology’, which not only reflects the persistence of the charge of positivism, but also shows that most scholars prefer to locate themselves within more specific, often interdisciplinary fields of literary study. In this sense, this volume does not only prove the ongoing relevance of traditional fields such as rhetoric and thematology, but provides contributions to currently flourishing research areas, among them literary multilingualism, literature and emotions, and ecocriticism.

Book Schaltstelle

Download or read book Schaltstelle written by Karen J. Leeder and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2007 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Schaltstelle presents a pioneering examination of contemporary German poetry at the turn of the twenty-first century. Internationally recognised experts from Germany, UK, USA, Canada, Italy and the Netherlands offer a first assessment of the paths that German poetry has taken into the new millennium. Alongside in-depth analyses of established names are broader surveys of poetry of the body, the use of cliché, theories of metaphor, the topos of childhood, the 'new simplicity', and contributions dedicated to the youngest generation of poets making their debut in the new century. The volume also contains an interview with Heinz Czechowski, a substantial Bibliography and new poems by eight leading poets. Poetry is too often marginalised in discussions about literature in the Berlin Republic: this volume demonstrates that it has a vital role to play at their heart.
