Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dredges and Dredging It is a singular fact that nearly every man feels that he is com petent to carry on a job of earth or rock excavation, yet there is nothing more difficult than to do such work economically. Man since prehistoric times has been digging into mother earth, yet there is always something to learn regarding excavation work. The last word will never be said on the subject. In this treatise only one class of excavation is touched upon, namely, dredging. If one needs an excuse for offering to the profession this book, it is found in the vast importance of dredging in our commercial life. Not only are there millions upon millions of dollars invested in dredging plants and outfits, but it has only been possible to con struct and use vessels of great tonnage, owing to the wonderful achievements of the dredge designers and the engineers and con tractors engaged in operating such machines. Then, too, great canals are constructed with the aid of dredges, large areas of swamp lands are reclaimed for the use of man with such machines, and precious metals are recovered from streams or river bottoms with their aid. This treatise is written with a view of presenting the subject in a concise and logical manner, so that it may be found useful both to the man of experience and to the beginner or student. Should it so prove the author will feel that his labor has not been in vain. The thanks of the author are due Mr. Daniel J. Hauer for many valuable suggestions. C. P. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dredges and Gold Dredging We are often asked why we located in the East. Briefly, because we are right in the center of production of all the material entering into the construction of a dredge. The largest part of the machinery is of special steel, cast, wrought, manganese, chrome and nickel, all of which are produced only in the East and at our door; in fact, most of the material for all of the important parts of every dredge built in this country is produced on the Atlantic Coast. Being located in the very center of production, we procure the best material quickly and cheaply. Inspection And Selection Of Raw Material Our supervising engineers are constantly visiting the mills, inspecting, selecting and testing our materials; therefore, we get the best selection and quality to meet our wants in the shortest time possible. Hence we are able to turn out complete dredges in much shorter time, and at less cost, than any of the Western Manufacturers. We are the first and only concern in this country to devote its whole attention exclusively to the designing and building of gold dredges; therefore, we are especially well equipped to do this work much better and more quickly than other concerns; for with them, dredge building is only a side line, and their principal business, which receives their best efforts, is the manufacturing of some other lines of product. Some of our engineers were taken from the California dredging fields, and thus we have the advantage of the many lessons learned in that country. It is not a compendium Of statistics. Neither is it a record Of the actual performance Of specific dredges Of all kinds and under all conditions; nor yet a compilation Of dredging cost data. Such information is already minutely available in the Annual Reports of the Chief of Engineers, U. S. Army, and in the records Of the various departments of commonwealths and municipalities controlling dredging operations in their respective localities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gold Dredging in the United States The recovery of gold from sands and gravels is one of the oldest forms of mining; it antedates history and has been practiced by savage peoples. In North America the search for placer gold has been a powerful agency in the exploration and development of unknown regions and has profoundly influenced the course of our civilization. With the progress of invention, the improvements in machinery, and the availability of large capital for the conduct of great operations, the tendency in placer, as in many other branches of mining, has been toward the working of extensive but comparatively low-grade deposits. The early miner washed the rich spots in stream beds or terraces with his pan, his long tom, and his primitive sluice. Then followed the growth of hydraulic mining and the use of giants supplied with water under pressures of hundreds of pounds to the square inch that could work at a profit gravels whose gold tenor was less than 3 cents to the cubic yard. Finally came the dredge that could handle deposits lying so far below water level as to be beyond attack by other methods. Although the gold dredge was first successful on a commercial scale in New Zealand, it has reached its present strength and efficiency in this country and its development is a monument to the daring, per severance and technical skill of the many men, mine owners and engineers who have each contributed something to the final result. The Bureau of Mines, authorized to conduct investigations for the purpose of increasing efficiency in the mineral industries, had its attention called some years ago to the need of a comprehensive report on gold dredging in the United States. The director of the bureau recognized that such a report should summarize the development of the gold dredge, should describe in detail the essential features of present-day dredges, should discuss the facts that determine whether a placer deposit can be profitably dredged, and should point out the approved methods of prospecting placer ground and of operating dredges. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gold Dredging Enumeration of these latter, howe\ er, may serve to mark the failures of inventors in the past, and thus warn their successors against similar attempts. Undei the heading of obsolete machines may be classed the pneumatic caisson, the submarine boat, the hydraulic. Elevator, and the vacuum dredge. The pneumatic caisson was on the principle employed in making cylinders for the piers of bridges. In it, the diver was let down so as to work direct on the bed of the river. This might be all right for a rich patch, the situation Of which was exactly known; but, for men-day work, where much barren stuff had to be lifted, it proved a lamentable failure. Submarine boat, on the principle of the diiing bell, is said to ha\e been con structed, but never used. Dredging operations using the principle of the hydraulic elevator were attempted on the Chestatee River, Lumpkin co., (ia., but proved unsuccessful, the elevator being out of place in a river bed, many feet below the lewl Of the water, Since most of its work consisted in raising water that did not contain gold. The Bazin dredge was one of the first worked on the vacuum system. The principle upon which the vacuum in this machine was obtained lay in the difference of level between the water outside and the bottom of the bull, in consequence of which the water was forced up the suction-pipe projecting down from the hull to the river bed, and in doing SO carried up the auriferous sands. A centrifugal pump re ceived all the matter forced into the tube, and, adding fresh impulse to its progress, delivered it to the washing appliances. A disad vantage Of this form of dredge was that it required a considerable depth of water in order to produce the requisite amount of vacuum for efficient work. This defect led to the introduction of steam vacuum dredges. The boat was fitted with a boiler and steam pump, 0, each connected with a vacuum chamber, from which projected the. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gold Dredging in California Gentlemen: I have the honor to transmit Bulletin No. 36, "Gold Dredging in California." The issuance of this Bulletin has been contemplated for some time, and some information concerning the subject was obtained in 1902, but owing to the rapid changes which have affected this branch of the gold mining industry, and the difficulty met with in securing accurate data which would serve to illustrate the actual conditions of gold dredging in this State, it has been deemed best to delay the publication of the report until the present time. The items of costs of operation, which are so vital to a publication of this nature, have been extremely difficult to obtain from many of the companies engaged in dredging. This has not been due particularly to any intention on the part of the companies to withhold the information, but to the fact that many operators have not until recently preserved a detailed record of expenditures. I wish to here extend many thanks to Col. J. E. Doolittle for his valuable assistance in the preparation of this Bulletin, and also to the many operators who have furnished information and assistance which have made this publication possible. I also wish to thank Mr. O. W.Jasper of Oroville, Mr. Howard D. Smith, and Mr. A. H. Ward, who rendered assistance; also many others whose names are not here mentioned and who have aided in the work by furnishing valuable information. Engaged at various times in securing data for this report, and who were employed as Field Assistants, were Mr. P. C. Dubois, Mr. John D. McGillivray, Mr. William Forstner, and Mr. G. Holmes, to whom I wish to express due recognition for their services. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It has been the author's intention first to describe the principal types of dredge in such manner as to impart a fundamental working knowledge of their construction and operation, and then to consider, in concise form, the usual problems confronting the engineer in the conception and accomplishment of dredging projects. Because of the fact that most literature upon the subject, having been presented in the form of papers and articles in the technical periodicals, is not only not readily available, but incomplete, in that each as a rule treats only of one particular phase of the subject, it is thought that a need exists for a comprehensive treatise, which should be helpful alike to the student and engineer. To fill this want has been the author's objective. The importance of the subject, while not always apparent to the layman, is obviously paramount, involving the expenditure of many millions of dollars annually for the necessities of commercial life.
