Book Dredges and Dredging Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dredges and Dredging Classic Reprint written by Charles Prelini and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dredges and Dredging It is a singular fact that nearly every man feels that he is com petent to carry on a job of earth or rock excavation, yet there is nothing more difficult than to do such work economically. Man since prehistoric times has been digging into mother earth, yet there is always something to learn regarding excavation work. The last word will never be said on the subject. In this treatise only one class of excavation is touched upon, namely, dredging. If one needs an excuse for offering to the profession this book, it is found in the vast importance of dredging in our commercial life. Not only are there millions upon millions of dollars invested in dredging plants and outfits, but it has only been possible to con struct and use vessels of great tonnage, owing to the wonderful achievements of the dredge designers and the engineers and con tractors engaged in operating such machines. Then, too, great canals are constructed with the aid of dredges, large areas of swamp lands are reclaimed for the use of man with such machines, and precious metals are recovered from streams or river bottoms with their aid. This treatise is written with a view of presenting the subject in a concise and logical manner, so that it may be found useful both to the man of experience and to the beginner or student. Should it so prove the author will feel that his labor has not been in vain. The thanks of the author are due Mr. Daniel J. Hauer for many valuable suggestions. C. P. Download or read book The Hopper Dredge written by United States. Army. Corps of Engineers and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hopper dredges are designed to vacuum material from the sea floor through drag arms that load the material into the hold of the vessel. The cargo of mud, or sand, can then be transported to either an ocean disposal site, where the material is dropped to the bottom through openings in the bottom of the hull, or at an upland site such as a beach, or reclamation, where the material is pumped ashore by the ship. This method is most suited when excavating loose material from open areas for delivery to a distant disposal location. These vessels are generally certified to sail in coastal or ocean waters and are suited for working in rougher sea conditions beyond those suitable for other dredging plants.

Book Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat

Download or read book Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-09 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns over the potential ecological effects of fishing have increased with the expansion of fisheries throughout the marine waters of the United States. Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat describes how assessment of fishing impacts depends on gear type, number and location of bottom tows, and the physical and biological characteristics of seafloor habitats. Many experimental studies have documented acute, gear-specific effects of trawling and dredging on various types of habitat. These studies indicate that low mobility, long-lived species are more vulnerable to towed fishing gear than short-lived species in areas where the seabed is often disturbed by natural phenomena. Trawling and dredging may also change the composition and productivity of fish communities dependent on seafloor habitats for food and refuge. The scale of these impacts depends on the level of fishing effort. This volume presents color maps of fishing effort for all regions with significant bottom trawl or dredge fisheries-the first time that such data has been assembled and analyzed for the entire nation.

Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1920 edition. Excerpt: ... C. E., "The earliest dredge of this type used in the United States was, it is believed, the Gen. Moultrie, used in 1855, at Charleston, S. C.... This dredge is stated to have been a moderate sized commercial steamboat, converted into a dredge by the addition of centrifugal dredging pumps with necessary piping, etc., and with bins constructed in the hold. Her drags, or suction heads, were probably somewhat similar to those now in use.... From 25 cents to $1.00 per cu. yd. for material dredged, according to locality and amount of work, was still (previous to 1890) considered a fair price for dredging on ocean bars; and on account of the great cost of dredging, the plan of deepening these bars by scour produced by jetties was regarded as the only practicable one." However, after the conclusion, in 1891, of six years of dredging, by contract, to deepen the entrance channel to New York Harbor, "the cost of maintaining the dredged channel to full width and depth has been found to be very moderate." The first suction hopper dredge built by the Government was the Charleston, in 1890, having one 15 inch pump and a bin capacity of 340 cu. yds. Between 1890 and 1900, three more were built, the performance of which effected such a reduction in the cost of dredging ocean bars as to question the economy of constructing the costly jetty for the purpose of deepening these channels. Since 1900, the Government has built a goodly fleet of these machines, probably the most intensive construction period being from 1901 to 1904, during which the total number constructed and under construction was 14. Two such dredges, the Caribbean and Culebra, built in 1907 by the Maryland Steel Company, of Baltimore, Md., were used in the construction of...

Book Disposal of Dredge Spoil

Book excerpt: The report presents an assessment of the dredge spoil disposal problem and outlines a research program designed to provide needed information concerning current and potential spoil disposal practices. The report format is intended to reflect the two basic objectives of the report. Section A is directed toward management level review and presents (a) pertinent background information concerning the dredge spoil disposal problem and the current study, (b) conclusions and recommendations resulting from the problem assessment phase of the study, and (c) an outline of the recommended research program. Section B provides an objective assessment of the nationwide problem in sufficient detail to permit meaningful technical review by other interested personnel within and outside the Corps. Section C has been included to show a total-problem organizational structure which is being used to guide the development of the detailed research plan.
