Book New Spaces for Negotiating Art and Histories in Africa

Download or read book New Spaces for Negotiating Art and Histories in Africa written by Kerstin Pinther and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2015 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1990s, a new wave of globalization changed the field of cultural production in many African countries and paved the way for major new cultural events. In particular, during the last two decades, an ever growing series of art and cultural centers were and still are being established - often against the background of broader national (art) histories and the historic prominence of the state as the primary patron of the arts. In considering the historical genealogy of these 'new spaces, ' this book examines: the infrastructures and public spaces they create, the theoretical discourses they tap into and explore, the aesthetic and (cultural) political debates they stir, the role they play in the field of cultural institutions and cultural activism, and their relations with state and municipal institutions. (Series: African Art and Visual Cultures - Vol. 2) [Subject: African Studies, Cultural Studies, Art

Book The Dreamer and the Dreamed

Download or read book The Dreamer and the Dreamed written by Joseph Leahey and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shame and acceptance, love and loss, life and death. These dichotomies of being are at the heart of Joseph Leahey’s LGBTQ+ experience and this volume of collected poems. The Dreamer and the Dreamed: Collected Poems of Joseph Leahey Vol. 1 navigates the poet’s evolution starting with his tumultuous, life-changing artistic self-discovery in the early 1980s. Throughout this collection, Joseph grapples with the haunting memory of that experience and the ways his upbringing has shaped him sexually and socially. This process of coming to terms is underscored by a conflicted period of mourning following the death of his mother. Moving from themes of love and sex to grief and ageing exposes the tension between the adventurous young poet and his mature, older self. More than an exploration of the passage of time, these poems inhabit the liminal space between reality and the dream world. They consider the ways altered states of mind and dream consciousness influence life and art. Film, popular music, and literary icons infuse these words with rhythm, style, and musicality. They illustrate the ways different forms of expression and lyricism inspire the poet. Readers will recognize the influences C.P. Cavafy, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and James Baldwin, among others. Poetry lovers will enjoy the breadth of scope in this collection. From astrological phenomena and spirituality to homoeroticism and death, The Dreamer and the Dreamed reveals the complicated experiences of existence.

W. Chase Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the father of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst. In creating psychoanalysis, Freud developed therapeutic techniques such as the use of free association and discovered transference, establishing its central role in the analytic process. Freud's redefinition of sexuality to include its infantile forms led him to formulate the Oedipus complex as the central tenet of psychoanalytical theory. His analysis of dreams as wish-fulfillments provided him with models for the clinical analysis of symptom formation and the mechanisms of repression as well as for elaboration of his theory of the unconscious. Freud postulated the existence of libido, an energy with which mental processes and structures are invested and which generates erotic attachments, and a death drive, the source of compulsive repetition, hate, aggression and neurotic guilt.

Book ARTPOOL The Experimental Art Archive of East Central Europe

Download or read book ARTPOOL The Experimental Art Archive of East Central Europe written by György Galántai and published by Artpool Art Research Center. This book was released on 2013-10-03 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of texts and documents selected from and illustrating the history of Artpool, a non-profit artist run institution in Budapest, established in 1979 by György Galántai and Júlia Klaniczay and operating since 1992 under the name of Artpool Art Research Center. The book focuses on Artpool’s direct antecedents (among them the events at György Galántai's Chapel Studio in Balatonboglár, 1970–1973), on the foundation, development, art projects and events, as well as the preferences and issues pertaining to art research (not independent of the historical and social environment they were conceived in) that had formed throughout the course of many years and decades. "The occasion of the publication of ARTPOOL The Experimental Art Archive of East-Central Europe is a milestone in the history of art for its documentation of a remarkable period in the chronicles of conceptual, performance, installation, and video art, as well ephemeral mediums such as mail art and artists’ stamp sheets, postcards, rubber stamp imprints, artists’ writings and samizdat publications. The work represented in the Artpool archive is astonishing in its scope and quantity, quality of imagination, intellectual force, and the courage of the artists who created it. This volume presents an opportunity to reflect on the events that brought Artpool into being, to acknowledge that while originating in the context of East-Central Europe, Artpool’s community has always been international, and to evaluate its broad contributions to world culture and society." (Kristine Stiles)

  • Author : Eunsong Kim

Download or read book The Politics of Collecting written by Eunsong Kim and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-24 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Politics of Collecting, Eunsong Kim traces how racial capitalism and colonialism situated the rise of US museum collections and conceptual art forms. Investigating historical legal and property claims, she argues that regimes of expropriation—rather than merit or good taste—are responsible for popular ideas of formal innovation and artistic genius. In doing so, she details how Marcel Duchamp’s canonization has more to do with his patron’s donations to museums than it does the quality of Duchamp’s work, and uncovers the racialized and financialized logic behind the Archive of New Poetry’s collecting practices. Ranging from the conception of philanthropy devised by the robber barons of the late nineteenth century to ongoing digitization projects, Kim provides a new history of contemporary art that accounts for the complicated entanglement of race, capital, and labor behind storied art institutions and artists. Drawing on history, theory, and economics, Kim challenges received notions of artistic success and talent and calls for a new vision of art beyond the cultural institution.
