Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every mental activity is dominated by the law of "bipolarity": to every instinct there corresponds a counter-instinct; to every virtue, a vice; to every manifestation of strength, some weakness. One can never understand the nature of man so long as one fails to take into consideration this fact. My work treats of the secrets of the human soul. It would be unfair to appraise humanity on the basis of the results of these investigations. For this work deals specifically with the evil in human nature, and only with the evil. But we must not forget that there is also another side. Perhaps I can make myself clear best through an example: A stranger comes into some town unfamiliar to him; he looks over very thoroughly and with great enthusiasm its monuments of art; he is charmed by the beautiful sights which culture has provided. He then departs believing he has become thoroughly acquainted with the town. Another traveller says to himself, - after having gone through the program suggested by the usual traveller's guide: Now I want to look into the reverse side of the life of this place! He knows that the pompous formal life has its seamy side, and he discovers once more that only he is able truly to appraise the light side of the picture who has familiarized himself also with its shadows

  • Release : 2018-05-15
  • ISBN : 9781987764000
  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book Dreaming Since Eve written by Valerie Meluskey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Possibly since time on earth began, dreaming has connected human beings to powerful insights and guidance. Dreaming Since Eve reveals how the brilliant dream process grants not only understanding and inspiration, but also actual solutions. The key to receiving this astute guidance requires only that we pay attention. In Dreaming Since Eve, Valerie Meluskey, Ph.D., explores the universal human world of dreams and sexuality. Most people, psychologists included, assume that sexual dreams are about our personal sexuality. The author has discovered that sexual dreams are about our deepest needs and desires-about what we feel is lacking- not merely about physically sexuality. We learn that our true inner needs are felt with extraordinary intensity. Interestingly, dreams that truly explore physically sexual issues come forth in our dreams with various metaphors, frequently from the animal kingdom, especially the feline family, and also in the symbols of desserts and sweets-pies, cakes, cheeses, and fruits. Our higher imagination even makes symbolic use of the game of basketball, a game of five (senses) with a great deal of intense back and forth interaction as an analogy for sex. The author has utilized the dreams of some of her clients from over more than thirty years as a psychotherapist. These carefully chosen dreams answer dreamers' questions about all types of relationships. Separate chapters focus on conflictual relationships; those without and longing for a close relationship; homosexual and lesbian relationships; impotence and frigidity; sexual abuse and its healing; and the process of creating wholeness. Separate chapters show the readers how to decipher the meanings of dreams. 1. The first chapter recognizes that dreams illustrate the dreamer's self and Self evaluation. 2. The most useful approach to learning what our dreams have to tell us involves getting in touch with our feelings: how the emotions felt during the dream reflect events in our lives that elicit those same feelings. 3. The next avenue of discovery involves the language used to alert us. 4. A similar area of detection involves summarizing the dream content to find a theme. 5. Then, of course comes the famous and popular work of exploring symbols-both personal and universal. Our ability to dream illustrates our capacity as artists through our dreaming-dramatists, actors, poets, musicians, choreographers, and all varieties of the visual arts. We realize how our dreams come through the inner eye, the "Third Eye" via which we access a higher dimension of ourselves. Our function of dreaming also proves that we are endowed with a high level of innate psychological insight. Valerie Meluskey has explored dreams and their meanings since her childhood. Earning a Masters Degree in psychology satisfied her love of dance and theater in her fieldwork with Movement, Dance, and Drama Therapy. She was able to introduce work with dreams to young adults (age 15 to 35) at a small private mental health facility in which the patients lived on a farm in 6 updated houses. Dr. Meluskey's doctoral work included NLP (neuro linguistic programming), Open Focus Biofeedback, and research on coping with life after death in various cultures, and more work with dreams. As the title Dreaming Since Eve suggests, her work addresses the spiritual origins of dreaming. For example, in the Old Testament of the Judeo Christian Bible, God puts Adam to sleep to perform the amazing operation of bringing forth Eve-and nowhere does scripture report that Adam ever woke up! Readers of Dreaming Since Eve can learn a great deal about themselves and others, and about their connection to their personal creative and spiritual source. This book can be used as a text for self-knowledge, and for school or group work.

Book excerpt: The Evil That Men Do introduced readers to the lifework and the techniques of FBI profiler Roy Hazelwood. Now, in Dark Dreams, Hazelwood-- writing with bestselling author Stephen G. Michaud-- will take then deep into the minds of his prey, the world's most dangerous sexual criminals, and reveal the extent to which these individuals permeate our society. Profiler Roy Hazelwood is one of the world's leading experts on the strangest and most dangerous of all aberrant offenders-- the sexual criminal. In Dark Dreams he reveals the twisted motive and thinking that go into the most reprehensible crimes. He also catalogs the innovative and remarkably effective techniques-- investigative approaches that he helped pioneer at the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit-- that allow law enforcement agents to construct psychological profiles of the offenders who commit these crimes. Hazelwood has helped track down some of the most violent and well-known criminals in modern history; in Dark Dreams he takes readers into his world-- a sinister world inhabited by scores of dangerous offenders for every Roy Hazelwood who would put them behind bars: * A young woman disappears from the convenience store where she works. Her skeletonized remains are found in a field, near a torture device. Who committed this heinous crime? And why? * A teenager's body is found hanging in a storm sewer. His clothes are neatly folded by the entrance and a stopwatch is found in his mouth. Is he the victim of a bizarre, ritualistic murder...or an elaborate masturbatory fantasy gone awry? * A married couple, driving with their toddler in the backseat, pick up a female hitchhiker. They kidnap her and for seven years keep her as a sexual slave. The wife agreed to this inhuman arrangement in exchange for having a second child. Who was to blame? As gruesome as the crimes are and as unsettling as the odds seem, Hazelwood proves that the right amount of determination and logic can bring even the most cunning and devious criminals to justice. Dark Dreams is a 2002 Edgar Award Nominee for Best Fact Crime.

While we sleep, certain things take place that we would not necessarily pursue while awake: participating in an orgy, making love with someone of the same gender, or being intimate with our best friend’s partner. To get there is a miracle, a mystery, a gift, and a curse—a voyage permitted only to those who’ve always believed there’s another world than the one that meets the eye. Those fated to make the passage are marked forever by a map of that wondrous city tattooed on their flesh after a single orgasmic night. To this kingdom of ghost trains, lion-priests, living kanji, and cream-filled canals come four travelers: Oleg, a New York locksmith; the beekeeper November; Ludovico, a binder of rare books; and a young Japanese woman named Sei. Book Dreaming Souls

    Book Details:
  • Author : Owen Flanagan
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2001-05-17
  • ISBN : 019534958X
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Dreaming Souls written by Owen Flanagan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-17 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What, if anything, do dreams tell us about ourselves? What is the relationship between types of sleep and types of dreams? Does dreaming serve any purpose? Or are dreams simply meaningless mental noise--"unmusical fingers wandering over the piano keys"? With expertise in philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, Owen Flanagan is uniquely qualified to answer these questions. And in Dreaming Souls he provides both an accessible survey of the latest research on sleep and dreams and a compelling new theory about the nature and function of dreaming. Flanagan argues that while sleep has a clear biological function and adaptive value, dreams are merely side effects, "free riders," irrelevant from an evolutionary point of view. But dreams are hardly unimportant. Indeed, Flanagan argues that dreams are self-expressive, the result of our need to find or to create meaning, even when we're sleeping. Rejecting Freud's theory of manifest and latent content--of repressed wishes appearing in disguised form--Flanagan shows how brainstem activity during sleep generates a jumbled profusion of memories, images, thoughts, emotions, and desires, which the cerebral cortex then attempts to shape into a more or less coherent story. Such dream-narratives range from the relatively mundane worries of non REM sleep to the fantastic confabulations of deep REM that resemble psychotic episodes in their strangeness. But however bizarre these narratives may be, they can shed light on our mental life, our well being, and our sense of self. Written with clarity, lively wit, and remarkable insight, Dreaming Souls offers a fascinating new way of apprehending one of the oldest mysteries of mental life.

Book Testosterone Dreams

  • Author : John Hoberman
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2005-02-21
  • ISBN : 0520939786
  • Pages : 390 pages

Download or read book Testosterone Dreams written by John Hoberman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2005-02-21 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Testosterone has inspired dreams—of restored youth, recharged sexual appetites, faster running, quicker thinking, bigger muscles—since it was first synthesized in 1935. This provocative book investigates the complex, bizarre, and sometimes outrageous history of synthetic testosterone and other male hormone therapies. Exploring many little-known social arenas—both inside and outside the medical world—in which these substances are becoming increasingly available and accepted, Testosterone Dreams examines the implications and dangers of their use in professional sports, in the workplace, in our sex lives, and beyond. Testosterone Dreams tells the story of testosterone's growing and sometimes concealed influence in our culture over the past 70 years. It explores such controversial topics as the invention and marketing of the male menopause, the disturbing history of hormonal and other medical treatments aimed at boosting or suppressing women's sexuality, and hormone doping in sporting events such as the Tour de France and the Olympics, and in Major League Baseball. It brings to light the hidden use of hormone doping by policemen, soldiers, and other workers in a variety of jobs. It also discusses the burgeoning steroid use in the gay community and its relation to AIDS, and takes a hard look at the pharmaceutical industry's promotional campaigns to create new markets for testosterone products. Testosterone Dreams is the first book to bring together the whole story of testosterone and to consider its social and ethical implications: Where does therapy end and performance enhancement begin? How are changing medical technologies affecting how we think about our identities as men and women and the elusive goal of "well-being"? This book will be essential reading as we move inexorably toward the wide-open, libertarian pharmacology that is now making these drug regimes available to a wider and wider clientele.
