Book Dreaming on Both Sides of the Brain

Download or read book Dreaming on Both Sides of the Brain written by Doris E. Cohen and published by Hampton Roads Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dream is not just white noise or something that happens to you while you sleep. Dreams are the secret language of your unconscious. This book will teach you how to: • Unlock the secrets of your personal dream language • Explore and interpret the meaning of your dreams • Harness the power of the brain to uncover a life of greater richness and meaning So often when we awake we find that our dreams have either evaporated like mist or seem to be just on the edge of our memory. Many people cannot recall their dreams at all. Cohen has developed a 7-step process to let you tap into the rich repository of your subconscious: 1. Recall and record. 2. Title your dream. 3. Read or repeat aloud. 4. Consider what is uppermost in your life right now. 5. Describe your dream's objects and qualities as if you were talking to a Martian. 6. Summarize the message from the unconscious. 7. Consider the dream's guidance for waking life. Drawing on years of clinical experience and her familiarity with Freud, myth, and sacred writings, Cohen presents a program that results in a life of abundance, texture, and self-awareness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few years ago, after the great flood of 2011, I went on a four day tour of the Mississippi Delta accompanied by a good friend whom I will refer to as P.A. We left Memphis early one morning and headed down Highway 61 on our way to Greenville. As we traveled down 61, I recalled many years ago passing through this area and it had not changed. P.A. was my guide pointing out that Mississippi is a special place and much maligned by others. The hot sun, unpainted buildings, scattered shacks, small towns half empty, miles of cultivated fields, blues echoing in small towns, friendliest people on the planet, the arts, Oxford and Ole Miss, Blues venues like the Shack-Up Inn, and Ground Zero, and the unspoken sadness from a brutal past, all contributed to the poems in this brief collection. Some are from personal experience, or a response to life in the Delta, others from what I learned from P.A. It is my hope as you read each poem you will see the Delta with all its beauty, all its faults, and I hope someday experience its culture first hand before time brings change and the Delta fades into memory.

Do you wake up with just the briefest memory of your dream and you want to learn how to remember better? Do you want to know what your dreams mean? If the answer to any of those questions is yes, then this book is for you. Man has always been fascinated by the world of dreams. For thousands of years, dreams have been important to many cultures. They are how we can get in touch with ourselves, to learn, to grow and to overcome. However, how can we fully explore our dreams when they fade as we wake up? The answer is lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming is when we know that we are in a dream state and therefore, we can look at our dream elements and find the meaning behind them. Everything that we see in our dreams is produced by our own minds; lucid dreaming allows us to be aware of what we see in our dreams, helping us to learn and to remember what we have seen.

Book Dreaming Souls

    Book Details:
  • Author : Owen Flanagan
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2001-05-17
  • ISBN : 0190286547
  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book Dreaming Souls written by Owen Flanagan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-17 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What, if anything, do dreams tell us about ourselves? What is the relationship between types of sleep and types of dreams? Does dreaming serve any purpose? Or are dreams simply meaningless mental noise--"unmusical fingers wandering over the piano keys"? With expertise in philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, Owen Flanagan is uniquely qualified to answer these questions. And in Dreaming Souls he provides both an accessible survey of the latest research on sleep and dreams and a compelling new theory about the nature and function of dreaming. Flanagan argues that while sleep has a clear biological function and adaptive value, dreams are merely side effects, "free riders," irrelevant from an evolutionary point of view. But dreams are hardly unimportant. Indeed, Flanagan argues that dreams are self-expressive, the result of our need to find or to create meaning, even when we're sleeping. Rejecting Freud's theory of manifest and latent content--of repressed wishes appearing in disguised form--Flanagan shows how brainstem activity during sleep generates a jumbled profusion of memories, images, thoughts, emotions, and desires, which the cerebral cortex then attempts to shape into a more or less coherent story. Such dream-narratives range from the relatively mundane worries of non REM sleep to the fantastic confabulations of deep REM that resemble psychotic episodes in their strangeness. But however bizarre these narratives may be, they can shed light on our mental life, our well being, and our sense of self. Written with clarity, lively wit, and remarkable insight, Dreaming Souls offers a fascinating new way of apprehending one of the oldest mysteries of mental life.

Book Understanding Sleep and Dreaming

This book was released on 2003-01-31 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed primarily as a text this volume is an up-to-date and integrated overview of physiological sleep mechanisms, brain function, psychological ramifications of sleep, dimensions of dreaming, and clinical disorders associated with sleep. It is accessibly written with specially boxed material that enhances the text. Authored by a researcher/clinician/professor with more than 25 years of experience in sleep studies, Understanding Sleep and Dreaming provides a solid basis for those who are not expert in this area. It offers a good foundation for those who will continue sleep studies, while at the same time offering enough information for those who will apply this knowledge in other ways such as clinicians in their individual practices or researchers for whom sleep may be part of a specific study. It is an excellent text for courses on sleep at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
