Book excerpt: The tradition of weird poetry is one that stretches back for millennia, to the earliest literary expression of the human race. In this new volume-the first comprehensive historical anthology of weird, horrific, and supernatural poetry in more than 50 years-the editors have rightly begun their survey of weirdness in verse with Homer's "Odyssey," proceeding through Greek, Latin, and medieval verse to such towering poets of English and American literature as Coleridge, Shelley, Poe, Tennyson, and Longfellow. With the dawn of the 20th century, such leaders of horrific prose as H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Donald Wandrei, and Robert E. Howard came to the fore. Our own day has seen a remarkable resurgence in weird poetry, and such poets as Richard L. Tierney, Bruce Boston, W. H. Pugmire, and Ann K. Schwader have added to a legacy that stretches back to the dawn of time. The editors have added brief biographical notes on all the poets included, along with bibliographical information on the poems. This volume will become the standard edition of weird poetry for decades to come. S. T. Joshi is the author of "Unutterable Horror: A History of Supernatural Fiction" (2012) and many other works of criticism and scholarship. Steven J. Mariconda is the author of many essays on H. P. Lovecraft, Ramsey Campbell, and other writers of weird fiction.

Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son—and readers—the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children’s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.

Book Dreaming

  • Author : Jennifer M. Windt
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2015-06-05
  • ISBN : 0262028670
  • Pages : 825 pages

Download or read book Dreaming written by Jennifer M. Windt and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 825 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive proposal for a conceptual framework for describing conscious experience in dreams, integrating philosophy of mind, sleep and dream research, and interdisciplinary consciousness studies. Dreams, conceived as conscious experience or phenomenal states during sleep, offer an important contrast condition for theories of consciousness and the self. Yet, although there is a wealth of empirical research on sleep and dreaming, its potential contribution to consciousness research and philosophy of mind is largely overlooked. This might be due, in part, to a lack of conceptual clarity and an underlying disagreement about the nature of the phenomenon of dreaming itself. In Dreaming, Jennifer Windt lays the groundwork for solving this problem. She develops a conceptual framework describing not only what it means to say that dreams are conscious experiences but also how to locate dreams relative to such concepts as perception, hallucination, and imagination, as well as thinking, knowledge, belief, deception, and self-consciousness. Arguing that a conceptual framework must be not only conceptually sound but also phenomenologically plausible and carefully informed by neuroscientific research, Windt integrates her review of philosophical work on dreaming, both historical and contemporary, with a survey of the most important empirical findings. This allows her to work toward a systematic and comprehensive new theoretical understanding of dreaming informed by a critical reading of contemporary research findings. Windt's account demonstrates that a philosophical analysis of the concept of dreaming can provide an important enrichment and extension to the conceptual repertoire of discussions of consciousness and the self and raises new questions for future research.

Book Descartes s Dreams

Download or read book Descartes s Dreams written by Ann Scholl and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ann Scholl revises the traditional understanding of the role of imagination and sensory perception in Descartes's Meditations. Traditionally, Cartesian scholars have focused primarily on sensory perception as the more significant of the two «special» modes of thought. In this work, Ann Scholl describes how a better understanding of Descartes's skepticism and his arguments for dualism are reached when imagination instead is understood as the more primary of the two special modes of thought. The result is a fresh reading and interpretation of Descartes's most influential work.

Book excerpt: Once again, I, the Great Tefleezy, greet you. This time I have found a way to take every experience that I have encountered since my previous work and turn it into influential rhetoric, rants, and disturbing releases of emotions - truly a piece of work. In this journal, I give credit to the IV Kyler for the inspiration to move my mind, while he gives you a peace of his mind. You may detect my appreciation for his contributions to the art - extending the legacy of artist. In this journal, I aim to demonstrate to the world that there are people who need to hear the word spoken in verse that scampers across pages in manners that witfully seem unrehearsed, yet so bold that it lights up pages. He who speaks, has the abilities to rule; yet, he who is humble, too, may project enough confidence to be of great influence.
