Book Dream Writing Assignments

Download or read book Dream Writing Assignments written by David E. LeCount and published by Boynton/Cook. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creative questions elicit creative responses. That's what English teacher David LeCount demonstrates in this collection of quirky, provocative writing prompts designed to release students from standardized writing assignments. More than 600 prompts serve as multidisciplinary opportunities for students to write creatively. Dream Writing Assignments can be used in two ways: as a practical, flexible, and handy resource for teachers who are looking for creative topics to assign, and as a stimulating student text. The prompts encourage students to research, reflect, and explore; engage in wordplay; and experience writing as a form of discovery and delight. Think of the results if you should invite your students to answer the following questions: How are violence and intelligence related? What is your idea of the perfect experience of beauty or happiness? If greed is an addiction, how can it be cured? More than a list of topics, Dream Writing Assignments includes student writing samples, plus principles and examples of masterpieces of Asian literature woven throughout the prompts. Haiku is a favorite of American teachers, and LeCount uses his expertise in this short verse form to offer some examples for the curious to try their hand or refresh their thinking. Use the prompts so students can discover their own voices. Shake them from their daily, routine minds and awaken them to a world where their imaginations can roam.

Book Why They Can t Write

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Warner
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2018-12-03
  • ISBN : 1421427117
  • Pages : 285 pages

Download or read book Why They Can t Write written by John Warner and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important challenge to what currently masquerades as conventional wisdom regarding the teaching of writing. There seems to be widespread agreement that—when it comes to the writing skills of college students—we are in the midst of a crisis. In Why They Can't Write, John Warner, who taught writing at the college level for two decades, argues that the problem isn't caused by a lack of rigor, or smartphones, or some generational character defect. Instead, he asserts, we're teaching writing wrong. Warner blames this on decades of educational reform rooted in standardization, assessments, and accountability. We have done no more, Warner argues, than conditioned students to perform "writing-related simulations," which pass temporary muster but do little to help students develop their writing abilities. This style of teaching has made students passive and disengaged. Worse yet, it hasn't prepared them for writing in the college classroom. Rather than making choices and thinking critically, as writers must, undergraduates simply follow the rules—such as the five-paragraph essay—designed to help them pass these high-stakes assessments. In Why They Can't Write, Warner has crafted both a diagnosis for what ails us and a blueprint for fixing a broken system. Combining current knowledge of what works in teaching and learning with the most enduring philosophies of classical education, this book challenges readers to develop the skills, attitudes, knowledge, and habits of mind of strong writers.

Book Emmanuel s Dream The True Story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah

Download or read book Emmanuel s Dream The True Story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah written by Laurie Ann Thompson and published by Schwartz & Wade. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah's inspiring true story—which was turned into a film, Emmanuel's Gift, narrated by Oprah Winfrey—is nothing short of remarkable. Born in Ghana, West Africa, with one deformed leg, he was dismissed by most people—but not by his mother, who taught him to reach for his dreams. As a boy, Emmanuel hopped to school more than two miles each way, learned to play soccer, left home at age thirteen to provide for his family, and, eventually, became a cyclist. He rode an astonishing four hundred miles across Ghana in 2001, spreading his powerful message: disability is not inability. Today, Emmanuel continues to work on behalf of the disabled. Thompson's lyrical prose and Qualls's bold collage illustrations offer a powerful celebration of triumphing over adversity. Includes an author's note with more information about Emmanuel's charity.

Book The Assignment

Book excerpt: Inspired by a real-life incident, this riveting novel explores the dangerous impact discrimination and antisemitism have on one community when a school assignment goes terribly wrong. Would you defend the indefensible? That's what seniors Logan March and Cade Crawford are asked to do when a favorite teacher instructs a group of students to argue for the Final Solution--the Nazi plan for the genocide of the Jewish people. Logan and Cade decide they must take a stand, and soon their actions draw the attention of the student body, the administration, and the community at large. But not everyone feels as Logan and Cade do--after all, isn't a school debate just a school debate? It's not long before the situation explodes, and acrimony and anger result. Based on true events, The Assignment asks: What does it take for tolerance, justice, and love to prevail? "An important look at a critical moment in history through a modern lens showcasing the power of student activism." --SLJ
