Download or read book Fluxus Forms written by Natilee Harren and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-03-20 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “PURGE the world of dead art, imitation, artificial art. . . . Promote living art, anti-art, promote NON ART REALITY to be grasped by all peoples,” writes artist George Maciunas in his Fluxus manifesto of 1963. Reacting against an elitist art world enthralled by modernist aesthetics, Fluxus encouraged playfulness, chance, irreverence, and viewer participation. The diverse collective—including George Brecht, Robert Filliou, Dick Higgins, Alison Knowles, George Maciunas, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Benjamin Patterson, Takako Saito, Mieko Shiomi, Ben Vautier, and Robert Watts—embraced humble objects and everyday gestures as critical means of finding freedom and excitement beyond traditional forms of art-making. While today the Fluxus collective is recognized for its radical neo-avant-garde works of performance, publishing, and relational art and its experimental, interdisciplinary approach, it was not taken seriously in its own time. With Fluxus Forms, Natilee Harren captures the magnetic energy of Fluxus activities and collaborations that emerged at the intersections of art, music, performance, and literature. The book offers insight into the nature of art in the 1960s as it traces the international development of the collective’s unique intermedia works—including event scores and Fluxbox multiples—that irreversibly expanded the boundaries of contemporary art.

Download or read book Partial Truths and Our Common Future written by Donald A. Crosby and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Argues that a pluralistic understanding of truth can foster productive conversations about common concerns involving religion, science, ethics, politics, economics, and ecology without falling into relativism. In this book, Donald A. Crosby defends the idea that all claims to truth are at best partial. Recognizing this, he argues, is a necessary safeguard against arrogance, close-mindedness, and potentially violent reactions to differences of outlook and practice. Crosby demonstrates how partial truths are inevitably at work in conversations and debates about religion, science, morality, economics, ecology, and social and political progress. He then focuses on the concept in the discipline of philosophy, looking at a number of distinctions that are taken to be strictly binarythose between fact and value, continuity and novelty, rationalism and empiricism, mind and body, and good and eviland demonstrates how in all of these cases, each on its own can offer only an incomplete picture. Partial Truths and Our Common Future invites ongoing dialogue with others for the sake of mutual enlargements of understanding rather than mere civility, and provides incentive for continuing open-minded and shared inquiries into the important issues of life. This is a transdisciplinary philosophical work that moves with grace across traditions, time periods, and thinkers. It is a master class in the existential and public relevance of philosophy and a rare example of a book that is both timely and timeless. Michael S. Hogue, author of The Promise of Religious Naturalism
Download or read book Path To Existence written by Ankit Agrawal and published by Educreation Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about 'Life and Dreams'. This is all about recognizing what our dreams mean to our lives. We all had big dreams during our childhood. But now, very few people are able to recollect them, and a few are having a desire to pursue their dreams someday and few are actually living their dreams. Though having this life proves the very existence of ourselves, but those who are not following their dreams should seriously ask themselves: 'Do I really exist?' I personally believe that it is our dream that gives us existence during this life and sometimes beyond also. - Ankit Agrawal
Download or read book Dreams Riddles and Visions written by Michael Segal and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume contains eight original studies, each of which focuses on a different chapter or central passage in Daniel and offers a new interpretation or reading of the passage in question. The studies span the Danielic tales and apocalypses, offering innovative analyses that often challenge the scholarly consensus regarding the exegesis of this book. The eight chapters relate to Daniel 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, Susanna, and the conception of angelology in Daniel. The studies are all based on careful textual analysis, including comparison between the Hebrew/Aramaic and Greek versions (especially regarding Daniel 4–6), and, in each case, the larger arguments are built upon solid philological foundations. Many of the insights proposed in this volume are based upon the realization that the authors of Daniel were frequently interpreters of earlier biblical books, and that the identification of these intertextual clues can be the key to unlocking the meaning of these texts. In this sense, Daniel is similar to other contemporaneous works, such as Jubilees and Qumran literature, but the extent of this phenomenon has not been fully appreciated by scholars of the book. This volume therefore contributes to the appreciation of Daniel as both the latest book in the Hebrew Bible, and a significant work in the landscape of Second Temple Judaism.
Download or read book A Place For Teacher Renewal written by Anthony G. Rud and published by IAP. This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally Published with Teachers College Press in 1992 Foreword by Maxine Greene Are teachers ever given the credit and respect they deserve? Is there a place where they can go to be treated as intelligent professionals rather than as underpaid tools of school administrations or the government? For some teachers the answer to these questions is, finally, yes! The focus of A Place for Teacher Renewal is the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, a statefunded university-based program, located in the Western North Carolina mountains, and designed to renew and retain teachers of all kinds. As an exemplary teacher renewal and staff development program, NCCAT strengthens teachers' commitment to their practice by offering outstanding teachers the opportunity for intensive personal investigation into topics inside or outside of their specialties. This hands-on study—extensive, concrete, and engaging—is just what many teachers need. After the tediousness and hectic pace of classroom life, they need a chance to use their intellect just for themselves. Teachers given a chance to express their full adult selves, a chance to be renewed by intellectual challenge, a chance to be valued as competent professionals, are more likely to stay in the profession. Chapters provide the reader with an historical perspective on the Center, arguments for the rationale of the Center, an overview of the programs offered, the roles of administration and evaluation in the creation and continued success of the Center, and NCCAT’s future role in teacher renewal. Many chapters are written by NCCAT staff members, all of whom are also experienced educators. A foreword by Maxine Greene and a chapter by Gary Griffin, as respected educators not affiliated with NCCAT, offer objective and very supportive comments on an idea, and a program, that is long overdue. Staff developers and anyone interested in teacher retention and renewal will find this case study of the finest teacher renewal program in the nation to be an invaluable resource.
Download or read book Cherry G Dreamscapes written by Gregory Cherry and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction Around 1976 I wrote a poem about dreams. Although I don’t recall the exact lines, within the essence of the poem was the idea that out dreams give us a sense of purpose in living. That dreams are our strongest motivators. However, that it was a rare occasion when reality measured up to the dream, and that instances where reality exceeded the dream almost never occur. At the end of the poem I resolved to hold onto my dreams. I went on to realize many of my smaller dreams; however the larger ones seemed to stay just out of reach. Like a dog chasing its tail, no matter how much effort I expended the big dreams seemed to move further away. It was at this point that I stopped and began to analyze this process of dream realization. I had been pouring more energy into the process thinking that the realization of a larger dream just required a greater effort. But that just didn’t work. Eventually, I figured out that problem was in my relationship with the dream itself. I had come to relate to the dream so intensely as a dream that I was not able to relate to it as something that was about to become part of my current reality. It was like playing the lottery. After a while you don’t actually expect to win. You think that it would be very nice but you don’t really expect that you will be the winner. And in that way, winning the lottery becomes only a dream that will never become part of your reality.

Download or read book New Directions in the Anthropology of Dreaming written by Jeannette Mageo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents new directions in contemporary anthropological dream research, surveying recent theorizations of dreaming that are developing both in and outside of anthropology. It incorporates new findings in neuroscience and philosophy of mind while demonstrating that dreams emerge from and comment on sociohistorical and cultural contexts. The chapters are written by prominent anthropologists working at the intersection of culture and consciousness who conduct ethnographic research in a variety of settings around the world, and reflect how dreaming is investigated by a range of informants in ever more diverse sites. As well as theorizing the dream in light of current anthropological and psychological research, the volume accounts for local dream theories and how they are situated within distinct cultural ontologies. It considers dreams as a resource for investigating and understanding cultural change; dreaming as a mode of thinking through, contesting, altering, consolidating, or escaping from identity; and the nature of dream mentation. In proposing new theoretical approaches to dreaming, the editors situate the topic within the recent call for an "anthropology of the night" and illustrate how dreams offer insight into current debates within anthropology’s mainstream. This up-to-date book defines a twenty-first century approach to culture and the dream that will be relevant to scholars from anthropology as well as other disciplines such as religious studies, the neurosciences, and psychology.
