Book excerpt: “[Momaday] must be ranked among the greatest of our contemporary writers.”—American Scholar "Momaday’s poems are rich with description, lush with dreaming, and filled with magic." — Library Journal (starred review) From Pulitzer Prize winner and revered literary master N. Scott Momaday, a beautiful and enchanting new poetry collection, at once a celebration of language, imagination, and the human spirit. “Language and the imagination work hand in hand, and together they enable us to reveal us to ourselves in story. That is indeed a magical process. . . . We imagine and we dream, and we translate our dreams into language.” —from the Preface A singular voice in American letters, Momaday’s love of language and storytelling are on full display in this brilliant new collection comprising one hundred sketches or “dream drawings”—furnishings of the mind—as he calls them. Influenced by his Native American heritage and its oral storytelling traditions, here are prose poems about nature, animals, warriors, and hunters, as well as meditations that explore themes of love, loss, time, and memory. Each piece, full of wisdom and wonder, showcases Momaday’s extraordinary lyrical talent, the breadth of his imagination, and the transformative power of his writing. Dream Drawings is also illustrated with a selection of black-and-white paintings by Momaday that capture the spirit of his prose. Poignant, inspired, and timeless, this is a collection that will nourish the soul.

Book Somniloquarry Dreams Drawings

Download or read book Somniloquarry Dreams Drawings written by Kevin Millsap and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As might be expected, the inspiration for this introduction came to me in a dream. Now, finally, I know the book is complete. It represents a long tenacious labor of many small quiet moments collected into a form that I hope you will enjoy. The text holds all the dreams (::) that I have written down. I began that recording process in the spring of 1981 at the age of 22. They span from my fourth year up to my forty-fifth, 1963 to 2004. These are actual nocturnal visions that were given to me in sleep. I have polished on them intensely all spring and feel that they have become a worthy set of image poems. The ink drawings (”) were done while awake. They are grouped to improve the flow of reading. Those sections do mark the moment in time of their actual public showings. Interspersing each of them into its chronological place would not do justice to the hundreds of other things that I have doodled and failed to capture. In total they present the story of a life. The narration and art are only (mostly) from the usually silent unconscious. Mundane events and needs have caused large gaps in the time-line. This work can be seen as a true novel or as an odd autobiography. Each entry is a crumb from my dreaming mind. I welcome you to the feast.

Book excerpt: Federico Fellini is one of the most beloved and revered filmmakers of the twentieth century, having entertained audiences worldwide with his ability to breathe life into imagery normally confined to human memory and emotion. His insights into the world of dreams have contributed to his many famous cinematic creations, including La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, and La Strada. A unique combination of memory, fantasy, and desire, this illustrated volume is a personal diary of Fellini's private visions and nighttime fantasies. Fellini, winner of four Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film, kept notebooks filled with unique sketches and notes from his dreams from the 1960s onward. This collection delves into his cinematic genius as it is captured in widely detailed caricatures and personal writings. This dream diary exhibits Fellini's deeply personal taste for the bizarre and the irrational. His sketches focus on the profound struggle of the soul and are tinged with humor, empathy, and insight. Fellini's Book of Dreams is an intriguing source of never-before-published writings and drawings, which reveal the master filmmaker's personal vision and his infinite imagination.

Book Fragonard

    Book Details:
  • Author : Perrin Stein
  • Publisher : Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • Release : 2016
  • ISBN : 1588396010
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book Fragonard written by Perrin Stein and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2016 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most forward-looking artists of the eighteenth century, Jean Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806) was a virtuoso draftsman whose works on paper count among the great achievements of his time. This book showcases Fragonard's mastery and experimentation in a range of media, from vivid red chalk to luminous brown wash, as well as etching, watercolor, and gouache. With essays that focus on the role of drawing in his creative process and provide a modern reevaluation of his graphic work, the book offers fresh perspectives on this innovative and independent artist, who began his career in the Rococo era but lived through and adapted to changing times in France, and who chose to leave the more defined path of official patronage in order to work for private clients. Unlike many earlier painters who used drawings primarily as preparatory tools, Fragonard explored their potential as works of art in their own right, ones that permitted him to work with great freedom and allowed his genius to shine. The 100 featured works come from New York collections, public and private, balancing a mix of well-loved masterpieces, new discoveries, and works that have long been out of the public eye. Fragonard: Drawing Triumphant illuminates the approach of a ceaselessly inventive artist whose draftsmanship was at the core of his remarkable body of work.

Book Interpreting Children s Drawings

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1983. In this comprehensive volume, Dr. Di Leo once again brings to the reader the fruitful combination of extensive knowledge of children's drawings and an approach to the subject that is intimate and humane, but highly sophisticated. Those familiar with his books have come to expect the lucid style with which Dr. Di Leo leads the clinician toward incisive interpretations of children's drawings, pointing out key features and using, where appropriate, parallels from the world of art and literature. His discussions of over 120 drawings reproduced in this volume cover an astonishing range of topics, including: Interpretation, Formal and Stylistic Features, Mostly Cognition (drawing a man in a boat), Mostly Affect (drawing a house), Projective Significance of Child Art, The Whole and Its Parts, Global Features, Body Parts, Sex Differences and Sex Roles in Western Society as Perceived by Children, Laterality and Its Effects on Drawing, Tree Drawings, and Personality Traits, Emotional Disorder Reflected in Drawings, Pitfalls, Role of the Arts in Education for Peace, and Reflections. In his analyses, Dr. Di Leo skillfully singles out examples of overinterpretation and other pitfalls, and answers questions such as: What does the therapist do when the child refuses to draw the family? Is the drawing a self-image? What are the differences between regressive drawings compared with the immature drawings of normal children? Even such fascinating topics as art brut, creativity, madness, and child art are discussed. The reader will find thought-provoking both the author's astute analyses and his keen awareness of the influence of society on children and the pictures they draw. Therapists in the field will find the book remarkably penetrating, while students in the field will delight in its clarity and thoroughness. Everyone who works with the drawings of children will find it absorbing.
