Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In books such as Mystics and Messiahs, Hidden Gospels, and The Next Christendom, Philip Jenkins has established himself as a leading commentator on religion and society. Now, in Dream Catchers, Jenkins offers a brilliant account of the changing mainstream attitudes towards Native American spirituality, once seen as degraded spectacle, now hailed as New Age salvation. Jenkins charts this remarkable change by highlighting the complex history of white American attitudes towards Native religions, considering everything from the 19th-century American obsession with "Hebrew Indians" and Lost Tribes, to the early 20th-century cult of the Maya as bearers of the wisdom of ancient Atlantis. He looks at the popularity of the Carlos Castaneda books, the writings of Lynn Andrews and Frank Waters, and explores New Age paraphernalia including dream-catchers, crystals, medicine bags, and Native-themed Tarot cards. He also examines the controversial New Age appropriation of Native sacred places and notes that many "white indians" see mainstream society as religiously empty. An engrossing account of our changing attitudes towards Native spirituality, Dream Catchers offers a fascinating introduction to one of the more interesting aspects of contemporary American religion.

Book excerpt: The Ojibwa people strongly believe in the myths and legends that make up their spiritual and cultural life. A significant part of the Ojibwa's spiritual life is the dreamcatcher. Although the exact genesis of this intriguing artifact is unknown, there are many beautiful and lyrical legends that reflect the dreamcatcher's beginnings. The dreamcatcher is a web-like structure built into a circular frame. Beauty is derived in the dreamcatcher through the symmetry of natural accents. The frame is often made from fresh tender wood that is bent to form a hoop or circle into which a web is then woven. The web is often made of deer sinew or colored thread. Often the webs are 'spun' with a hole in the center and decorated with stones or feathers or other natural materials. The Ojibwa believe that the dreamcatcher will serve throughout one's life as an invitation for good dreams to come to rest with the sleeper, as well as the fortification against nightmares and evil spirits. The good dreams flow through the web and into the dreamer, while the bad dreams and evil spirits are caught in the strands of the web and never reach the dreamer. One of the Ojibwa legends about the creation of the dreamcatcher suggests that the dreamcatcher was a gift from a spider to the Ojibwa people, in return for a favor an Ojibwa once did for the spider. This theme, among many others, is carried throughout this gorgeously illustrated book that charts the development of this living legend through the combination of photography and text. The Ojibwa of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Regions share a related history with many of their sister Algonquin tribes who can be found throughout the United States and Canada. The Ojibwa have introduced the dreamcatcher and its legends to the rest of the world as a living artifact of Native culture. Throughout history, the interaction between Ojibwa and other Native tribes has taught European settlers about the elusive boundary between the spiritual world, that is the world of consciousness and the world of dreams. Featured are more than 30 color photographs of contemporary dreamcatchers created by Native people with informative captions that identify and comment on the different patterns and their significance.

Book Dream Catcher

Download or read book Dream Catcher written by Margaret A. Salinger and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-09-10 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her highly anticipated memoir, Margaret A. Salinger writes about life with her famously reclusive father, J.D. Salinger—offering a rare look into the man and the myth, what it is like to be his daughter, and the effect of such a charismatic figure on the girls and women closest to him. With generosity and insight, Ms. Salinger has written a book that is eloquent, spellbinding, and wise, yet at the same time retains the intimacy of a novel. Her story chronicles an almost cultlike environment of extreme isolation and early neglect interwoven with times of laughter, joy, and dazzling beauty. Compassionately exploring the complex dynamics of family relationships, her story is one that seeks to come to terms with the dark parts of her life that, quite literally, nearly killed her, and to pass on a life-affirming heritage to her own child. The story of being a Salinger is unique; the story of being a daughter is universal. This book appeals to anyone, J.D. Salinger fan or no, who has ever had to struggle to sort out who she really is from whom her parents dreamed she might be.

Book DREAM CATCHERS Nature Meets Digital

Download or read book DREAM CATCHERS Nature Meets Digital written by Barbara Kennedy and published by Madison Avenue Publishers LLC. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Look inside a thing to know its wonder. Just like snowflakes, no two dream catchers--or dreams--are alike. Stick out your tongue and catch one on the very tip of it. Lick it. Roll it around on your tongue. Awaken your palate. Then take a bigger bite. Worst case, you’ll spit it out. Most likely, you’ll be back. It may take a while. We tend to fight it; it hurts so good. Dreams are sometimes bitter, sometimes sweet. But like a rare single malt Scotch in a crystal tumbler, you acquire a taste for it. You will want more. You will be back. Guaranteed. Everything you need has already been given to you. All you need to add is a dream and shake. Look up. Reach out. Catch a dream, ride a wave. Worst case, you fall out of bed. This book is best when downloaded onto a tablet or device where you can play with the photographs and expand them in order to travel through them and view the precision inner workings of nature. "Ancient legend originates with the Grandmother Spider, who sang the universe into existence but was saddened by the dreams of children." Photography is a marriage of light, subject, and time. An image is frozen in time, in a particular light, at a fractional moment, through a particular lens, and viewed by you. Thus, you become part of the ecology of the image. As you own the emotion evoked by the image, the original energy that snapped the camera in the first place, is re-energized and lives on in the energy you give to it, as the image continues to sensate. –The Ecology of Photography
