Book Flemish Paintings of the Seventeenth Century

Download or read book Flemish Paintings of the Seventeenth Century written by Arthur K. Wheelock and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The National Gallery of Art's collection of seventeenth-century Flemish paintings is relatively small, numbering less than sixty, but exceptional in quality. At the core of the collection are twelve paintings by Sir Peter Paul Rubens and his school and seventeen paintings by Sir Anthony van Dyck, including some of their finest masterpieces. Also represented are excellent works by other important Flemish masters, among them Osias Beert the Elder, Adriaen Brouwer, Jan Brueghel the Elder, and David Teniers the Younger." "This catalogue of the Gallery's remarkable collection of Flemish paintings offers new information about each of the individual works. Stylistic characteristics of the paintings have been analyzed; historical circumstances related to their creation have been assessed; and their provenances have been reexamined. A number of the paintings have undergone conservation treatment, while the technical characteristics of other works have been thoroughly studied. This exhaustive research has indicated that the titles, dates, and even attributions of a number of works needed to be changed, and the catalogue includes a concordance of these revisions."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Seventeenth Century Flemish Garland Paintings

Download or read book Seventeenth Century Flemish Garland Paintings written by Susan Merriam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on three celebrated northern European still life painters?Jan Brueghel, Daniel Seghers, and Jan Davidsz. de Heem?this book examines the emergence of the first garland painting in 1607-1608, and its subsequent transformation into a widely collected type of devotional image, curiosity, and decorative form. The first sustained study of the garland paintings, the book uses contextual and formal analysis to achieve two goals. One, it demonstrates how and why the paintings flourished in a number of contexts, ranging from an ecclesiastical center in Milan, to a Jesuit chapter house and private collections in Antwerp, to the Habsburg court in Vienna. Two, the book shows that when viewed over the course of the century, the images produced by Brueghel, Seghers and de Heem share important similarities, including an interest in self-referentiality and the exploration of pictorial form and materials. Using a range of evidence (inventories, period response, the paintings themselves), Susan Merriam shows how the pictures reconfigured the terms in which the devotional image was understood, and asked the viewer to consider in new ways how pictures are made and experienced.

Book The Flemish Primitives in Bruges

Download or read book The Flemish Primitives in Bruges written by Till-Holger Borchert and published by Ludion Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five centuries ago, Bruges was home to the Flemish Primitives. At the time, Bruges was one of the most important cities in Europe: an international centre of trade and meeting place for foreign merchants. It is this medieval Bruges through which we are guided by Till-Holger Borchert, director of the Bruges Museums. The wealth of the city and its art-loving inhabitants attracted dozens of artists. The pioneers among the socalled Flemish Primitives - Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Dieric Bouts, Hugo van der Goes and Gerard David - developed a new style of painting over the course of the fifteenth century that would make its influence felt as far as southern Europe. Although many of their paintings now hang among the masterpieces of the world's most prominent museums, Bruges was nevertheless able to hold on to a number of dazzling specimens of its owns heritage. This book allows you to take that heritage home. It is the perfect introduction for those who would like to become better acquainted with the artistic Bruges of the fifteenth centyury, as well as a splendid souvenir for anyone who has admired the Flemish Primitives in the city's main museums. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Flemish Painters: Notices of Their Lives and Works Since the first appearance of "The Early Flemish Painters" in 1857, criticism and enquiry have enlarged our knowledge of the schools of the Netherlands. Artists whose identity was not established are now familiar; records which seemed to have been lost, have been found again; and pictures which were thought to have perished are restored to us. The mass of materials at the historians command has greatly increased. The mere mention of the names of A. Pinchart, E. van Even, W. H. J. Weale, A. Wauters, E. de Busscher, and O. H. Ruelens, recalls to specialists the most important contributions made to the history of 15th century art in our day. To some of these gentlemen, and particularly to Mr. Pinchart whose communications are the more valuable because hitherto unpublished, we owe more than a mere acknowledgment of thanks. Book The Flemish Primitives Masters with provisional names

Download or read book The Flemish Primitives Masters with provisional names written by Musées royaux des beaux-arts de Belgique and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth volume examines all the works attributed to masters with provisional names from the 1470s to the first half of the 16th century (Master of the Joseph Sequence, Master of the Magdalen Legend, Master of the Orsoy Altarpiece, Master of the Saint Barbara Legend, Master of the Saint Catherine Legend, Master of the Saint Lucy Legend, Master of the Saint Ursula Legend, Master of the View of Saint-Gudule, Master of 1473). It was towards 1900 that anonymous works were first grouped, on the basis of stylistic affinities, around certain paintings presenting particular characteristics. Each group is attributed to an anonymous master named after the painting (the eponymous work) which forms the basis for this group. These ensembles serve to give direction to the work of art historians, in the hope of identifying these anonymous painters at a later date. Some of these groups, to which new works have been added over past decades, appear fairly heterogeneous, and merit critical reexamination in the light of modern analysis methods. Like the three previous volumes, it is published in English and abundantly illustrated with colour photographs of the investigated paintings, detail photographs and comparative material. Each of the nineteen paintings has been submitted to exhaustive and detailed examination following a scientific research method which has been fully established over the years. This includes, on the one hand, examination of the supports and the original frames, dendrochronological analysis, infrared reflectography, stereomicroscopic observation, radiographic analysis, ultraviolet fluorescence imaging and, where possible, examination of paint samples and, on the other hand, historical, iconographic and stylistic analysis, dating, attribution and bibliography. Information is drawn from documents in the museum's archives and supplemented with material held at the Royal Institute for the Study and Conservation of Belgium's Artistic Heritage (IRPA/KIK) and the Centre for the Study of Fifteenth-Century Painting in the Southern Netherlands and the Principality of Liege. Each group of paintings attributed to a master with a provisional name is introduced with a short status quaestionis evoking the origins of the grouping and the principal publications relating to it. In their notices on the individual paintings, the authors have based their research on comparing them as closely as possible with the works around which each ensemble is grouped. Certain paintings in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium are themselves eponymous works. In these cases the authors have made every effort to document these reference works as thoroughly as possible.
