Gesina ter Borch (1631–1690), a Dutch watercolorist and draftswoman—and the younger half-sister of painter Gerard ter Borch (1617–1681)—is one of the most well-known women artists of the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic. Her oeuvre is securely attributed and thoroughly catalogued, with three albums of her watercolors and calligraphy known today; surprisingly, though, she has never been the subject of an independent monograph or sustained discussion. This volume is the first to highlight her watercolors and calligraphy in their own right, alongside documentation of her work as an art teacher, archivist, and artist’s model. Adam Eaker revisits Ter Borch’s role during the genesis of Dutch “high-life” genre painting and, in doing so, examines the construction of gender and social classes by comparing her art with that of her brother. In this monograph, Eaker questions a historiography of women’s art that frequently valorizes painting over other media and values work for the market over “amateur” production. Gesina ter Borch offers a fascinating exploration of Ter Borch’s life and work and a more nuanced understanding of the ideologies and achievements of Dutch genre painting.

From 1500 to 1700, artists in northern Europe pioneered the category of pictures now known as genre, portrayals of people in ostensibly quotidian situations. Critical approaches to genre images have moved past the antiquated notion that they portray uncomplicated 'slices of life,' describing them instead as heavily encoded pictorial essays, laden with symbols that only the most erudite contemporary viewers and modern iconographers could fully comprehend. These essays challenge that limiting binary, revealing a more expansive array of accessible meanings in genre's deft grafting of everyday scenarios with a rich complex of experiential, cultural, political, and religious references. Kick was active in Amsterdam, the largest and busiest city of the Netherlands, alongside Rembrandt. Simon Kick began painting only at the age of 32, driven to do so only due to the tragic death of his brother-in-law and since the economic situation necessitated it. Nevertheless, he was an excellent painter who focused on painting portraits, histories, and, above all, genre topics. He was one of only ten 17th-century Dutch painters to practice the unique genre formula of the guardroom scene. His guardroom scenes stand out as being more gentrified than others due to the fact that he assimilated in them the elegance of contemporary civic-guard portraits. His figures are particularly striking since they are well-characterized, often depicted in a contemplative mood, and imbued with a strong psychological presence. The fact that he started his career late and passed away at an early age robbed us of a great painter. The book includes a biography of the painter, as well as a systematic and comparative iconographical and stylistic study of his work, with an attached critical oeuvre catalogue. As such, it provides an important tool for both art enthusiasts and collectors, as well as art professionals such as students, scholars, auctioneers, and art dealers.
