Book Exhibition of Contemporary German Art

Download or read book Exhibition of Contemporary German Art written by Paul Clemen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exhibition of Contemporary German Art: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; January, 1909 All European countries possessing a vigorous artistic life have been the arenas of fierce, frequently passionate strug gles during the last twenty years. An age which hurried along so restlessly and with such strides in all other directions, which brought with it such a complete revolution in theviews of life, could not abide by the comfortable, uniform pace of former times in the path of Art. There was a long, almost too long, period of fermentation and Art in its fresh youth in Germany seems to have passed through all the childish ailments conceivable. The danger was imminent that much of what was real and good in the last period would be thrown overboard with the old and dead and above all that the careful training in drawing would be lost entirely. There was perhaps no age in which such a lack of reverence was dis played. The right direction, however, was taken in time. Book Kirchner and the Berlin Street

Download or read book Kirchner and the Berlin Street written by Deborah Wye and published by The Museum of Modern Art. This book was released on 2008 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's remarkable series of paintings known as the Berlin Street Scenes is a highpoint of the artist's work and a milestone of German Expressionism, widely seen as a metaphor for modernity itself through their depiction of life in a major metropolis. Kirchner moved from Dresden to Berlin in 1911, and it was in this teeming city, immersed in its vitality, decadence and underlying sense of danger posed by the imminent World War I, that he created the Street Scenes in a sustained burst of creative energy and ambition between 1913 and 1915. As the most extensive consideration of these paintings in English, this richly illustrated volume examines the creative process undertaken by the artist as he explores his theme through various mediums, and presents the major body of related charcoal drawings, pen-and-ink studies, pastels, etchings, woodcuts and lithographs he created in addition to the paintings. The volume also investigates the significance of the streetwalker as a primary motif, and provides insight on the series in the context of Kirchner's wider oeuvre.

Book Catalogue of an Exhibition of Contemporary German Graphic Art Classic Reprint

Download or read book Catalogue of an Exhibition of Contemporary German Graphic Art Classic Reprint written by Martin Birnbaum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition of Contemporary German Graphic Art AN exhibition of drawings, lithographs, etch ings, and woodcuts by German artists ought naturally to prove far more stimulating than one made up of paintings, for even if we go back as far as Diirer we will be forced to admit that his paintings are not as refreshing or im pressive as his graphic works, and the same is true of practically all the great German mas ters, with the possible exception of Menzel and Leibl. Germany's artistic genius has always been distinctly graphic, and while it is impos sible to survey the whole existing field at all exhaustively within the limits of a short essay, one can without delay commence with the names of the three great living leaders, Max Klinger, Hans Thoma, and Max Liebermann, who tower above their compatriots. Book German Romantic Prints and Drawings

Download or read book German Romantic Prints and Drawings written by Giulia Bartrum and published by British Museum Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth-century saw the Napoleonic Wars bring about an end to the traditional art market in Germany, thereby leaving the artists with an opportunity to establish a new identity. Artists such as Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Peter Cornelius retreated to the techniques and values of the Renaissance and medieval periods, when art had been more concerned with simplicity and embodying spiritual values. This stunning book of prints and drawings, taken from an English private collection, explores the German romantic movement and how artists such as Freidrich Overbeck drew on the style of his illustrious predecessors Dürer and Raphael to create celebrated works such as Italia and Germania, which epitomizes the mood of this era. The recently-invented lithography technique features heavily among the most noteworthy examples from this era, as does a new, deeper interest in German landscape. Over one hundred items are reproduced and discussed in this superb selection of German prints and drawings from the years between the abolition of the Holy Roman Empire (1806) and German unification (1871), including the greatest and rarest of German romantic prints, The Four Times of Day by Philipp Otto Runge.

Book excerpt: This book accompanies the first major museum exhibition devoted to a reconstruction of the infamous Nazi display of modern art since the presentation originated by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1991. The book contains reflections on the genesis and evolution of the term "degenerate art" and details of the National Socialist policy on art. Art works from the exhibition Degenerate Art are compared to works of art from The Great German Art Exhibition, which was held at the same time and displayed the works of officially approved artists. The book also presents the after-effects of the attack on modernism that are felt even today.
