Book Verwisch die Spuren Bertolt Brecht s Work and Legacy

Download or read book Verwisch die Spuren Bertolt Brecht s Work and Legacy written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a cross-section of current Brecht studies, reflecting a variety of approaches and perspectives ranging from detailed exegesis of particular texts to cultural criticism in the broadest sense. It provides analyses of Brecht's work and investigates his pervasive influence in 20th century literature. The studies collected here cover the whole of Brecht’s career, from the early one-acter Kleinbürgerhochzeit of 1919 to the Sinn und Form years immediately preceding his death, as well as his use of tradition and his legacy. By way of redressing a tendency in Brecht reception to regard him mainly as a dramatist, the volume covers novels, poetry, film, photography, journalism and theory as well as plays.

Book Christoph Hein in Perspective

Download or read book Christoph Hein in Perspective written by Graham Jackman and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2000 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike many writers from the former GDR, Christoph Hein's reputation and standing - and his creativity - have remained intact despite the demise of the GDR in 1989-90. Christoph Hein in Perspectivebrings together essays by both established and younger scholars from Britain, Germany and the USA which together cover a wide spectrum of his work, from the early writings of the 1970s to the play In Acht und Bannof 1999 and including his speeches and essays as well as all his major prose works. There is a marked emphasis in the volume on Hein's post-Wendeoutput, with about half the contributions focusing primarily on this period. Another feature is the diversity of perspectives from which the works are examined: historical and political viewpoints are complemented by formal and comparative studies as well as by gender-based perspectives. The volume includes additionally the first published English translation of what is for many Hein's most successful work for the stage, Die wahre Geschichte des Ah Qof 1983 ('The True Story of Ah Q'). The volume as a whole should be of interest to scholars concerned with the GDR and with contemporary German culture, to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and also the others interested in the history and culture of Germany since 1945. Six of the essays are in English and six in German.

Book Gender Agency and Violence

Download or read book Gender Agency and Violence written by Dr Ulrike Zitzlsperger and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-03 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender, Agency and Violence: European Perspectives from Early Modern Times to the Present Day centres on literary, cinematic and artistic male and female perpetrators of violence and their discourses. This volume takes an interdisciplinary and cross-European approach – covering French, German, English and Italian case-studies from the sixteenth to the twentieth century and allowing for the exploration of recurrent themes. The contributions also facilitate an insight into how the arts and media respond to historical turning points which, time and again, challenge the link between gender, agency and violence for individuals and society alike.

Book A Companion to the Works of Hartmann Von Aue

Download or read book A Companion to the Works of Hartmann Von Aue written by Francis G. Gentry and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2005 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the course of perhaps twenty-five years of creative productivity (ca. 1180-ca. 1205), Hartmann von Aue authored a dispute about love between the body and the heart, Die Klage (ca. 1180-85), numerous songs of courtly love, crusading songs, and most likely took part in a Crusade himself." "The essays in this volume, written by scholars from North America and Europe, offer insight into many aspects of Hartmann's oeuvre, including the medieval and modern visual and literary reception of his works. The volume also offers considerations of Hartmann and Chretien; Hartmann's putative theological background and the influence of the Bible on his tales; the reflection of his medical knowledge in Der arme Heinrich and Iwein; and a complete survey of his lyric production. Newer avenues of research are also presented, with essays on issues of gender and on the role of pain as a constitutive part of the courtly experience."--Jacket.
