Book Dramatic Traditions of the Dark Ages

Download or read book Dramatic Traditions of the Dark Ages written by Joseph S. Tunison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dramatic Traditions of the Dark Ages The author of this book sincerely hopes that it will not be taken as a history of the drama in the Dark Ages. He does not assert more than a sporadic cultivation of what would now be called the legitimate theater at any part of the period between Constantine and Otto III. He has merely attempted to hold a brief for one of the parties to a controversy which, in his opinion, has either been ignored or decided incorrectly, for nearly three-quarters of a millennium. This controversy must be brought to a final decision before the literary history of Europe can be written correctly. As was recently said in The Nation (Vol. LXXXII, No. 2128, p. 307, col. 2): "The immense value to mediaeval Europe of the influence coming from the Eastern Empire is only in part recognized as yet;" and, if this be true in the domain of art, it is equally true in nearly every other department of human activity. Under the circumstances, it was natural that the author of this book should occasionally, perhaps frequently, overdo his part. He may have expanded the definition of the word "drama" unduly. Book Intercultural Transmission in the Medieval Mediterranean

Download or read book Intercultural Transmission in the Medieval Mediterranean written by Stephanie L. Hathaway and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents evidence of the extent and effects of intercultural contacts across Europe and the Mediterranean rim, opening up a new understanding of early medieval civilisation and its continuing influence in both Western and Eastern cultures today. From the perspectives of textual transmission, cultural memory, religion, art and cultural traditions, this work explores the central question of how ideas travelled in the medieval world, challenging the conventional notion of insular communities in the Middle Ages. Despite the schism between East and West that took hold after the thirteenth century this volume reveals a rich and extensive cultural exchange and demonstrates that transmission of ideas and culture across borders began much earlier than the Crusades. It contributes to new perspectives on medieval cities, Christian Europe's history with the Byzantine and Islamic Mediterranean, the landscape of power and the power-plays of the medieval Church, and the way in which cross-cultural transmission affected all of these areas.

Book How the Doctrine of the Incarnation Shaped Western Culture

Download or read book How the Doctrine of the Incarnation Shaped Western Culture written by Patricia Ranft and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years numerous scholars in disciplines not traditionally associated with theology have promoted an interesting thesis. They maintain that one particular Christian doctrine, the Incarnation, had an inordinate influence on the shape of Western culture. The doctrine, they say, was so radical that it mandated an epistemological break with pagan society's perception of the universe and forced Christians to form a new culture. As medieval society worked out the consequences of the doctrine, it gave birth to those attitudes, institutions, and actions that define modern Western culture. The claims are well argued, but it is a historically untested thesis. How the Doctrine of Incarnation Shaped Western Culture is a response to the situation. It investigates whether the presence of the doctrine had the definitive effect on Western culture that so many scholars claim it did. It searches early Christian and medieval sources for evidence and concludes that the doctrine had a dominant effect on the developing culture. No other idea was as omnipresent or pervasive in Western society during its formative stage as the Incarnation doctrine. The doctrine was influential in the establishment of every major facet of Western culture. Its paradox, irrationality, and juxtaposition of opposites created a tension that cried out for resolution, and society responded accordingly. The ideas within the doctrine acted as catalysts for cultural change. As a result, the West developed its most characteristic traits and forged a path that was uniquely its own.

Download or read book Deleuze and Theology written by Christopher Ben Simpson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can a theologian do with Deleuze? While using philosophy as a resource for theology is nothing new, Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995) presents a kind of limit-case for such a theological appropriation of philosophy: a thoroughly "modern" philosophy that would seem to be fundamentally hostile to Christian theology-a philosophy of atheistic immanence with an essentially chaotic vision of the world. Nonetheless, Deleuze's philosophy can generate many potential intersections with theology opening onto a field of configurations: a fractious middle between radical Deleuzian theologies that would think through theology and reinterpret it from the perspective of some version of Deleuzian philosophy and other theologies that would seek to learn from and respond to Deleuze from the perspective of confessional theology-to take from the encounter with Deleuze an opportunity to clarify and reform an orthodox Christian self-understanding.
